The 10 Absolute Best FPSes of All Time #10: F.E.A.R.

Split-screen.com: "Monolith Productions, veteran FPS developers who's works range from the anime mech-inspired Shogo: Mobile Armour Division and spy spoof/psychedelic 70's actioner No One Lives Forever, developed a title with enough action to 'make the player feel like they are an action movie hero' and enough horror to 'get under his skin'. Add to that a real-time shadow and lighting system to tank 2005's PC architecture and artificial intelligence advanced enough to give the Marines of Half-Life nightmares. The result? The intense and eloquently named, F.E.A.R. That it has a full form elevates it even higher from the 'most typical name for a horror game' category."

FEAR is not top ten, by any means. there are many, many better shooters than FEAR. FEAR had some great moments, but also alot of the game is boring, dull, and repetitive.

Half-Life, Halo, Goldeneye, any one of the Dooms, Turok 2, Far Cry, one of the Quakes, i mean there are so many more better shooters out there. This is just some dumb site that no ones heard of and they dont know what they are talking about.

It's up to Ravi (author of this article and a colleague of mine). He decides to make it an article it a day, it's up to him. Makes sense considering the magnitude of the task.

Or he could write it when he's got all ten of them ready. Makes even more sense.

How he does things is completely up to him, I'm afraid. He'd beat some one to death with the first Xbox 1 controller to prove how big and unwieldy it is. :P

As for milking hits, consider this: Every single game is unique. Forget the impact they created, the various expansions they brought about, the number of new tricks brought to the table or how fun they were. Each game has it's own essence that is hard to isolate, much less explicitly define in the right amount of words. Word limits exist for online journalists too, after all. :)

2.4 - LOL virtual cliffhangers...
This isn't a political, sociological dissertation on governmental policies and its ramifications/effects on its citizens, it's an opinion piece on video games. On FPS.

"Considering the magnitude of the task"? just LOL

2.5 - Well, I'll definitively wait for the full list to be out before I hit that website
Still think that instead of putting numbers on them, it should be:

"In random order, here's the 10 best FPS (or games, or whatever)". People will always argue about what is a personal opinion. Everybody is entitle to one, and none will ever have the same opinion as any author anyway, so sure enough, no matter what his choices will be, half the people here will not agree with him.

Good choice.

If Halo is on this list...I'm not going to continue.

I'm so tired of Halo getting the credit that Tribes deserves. It's just not cool.

3. Counterstrike
2. Halo

Sure, Doom pioneered the FPS but it's just not that good a game and doesn't really hold up with time.

F.E.A.R. is a excellent choice.

The ones I would like to see would be

Halo 1-Halo 2 and Halo 3 were good, but Halo 1 is what set the new bar for that generation.

Killzone 2-I know it’s still new but it had some incredible moments and set a new bar for this generation…for now anyway.

Rise of the Triad-I don’t know how many people played this one, I think it came out back in 1994 was amazing back in the day.

Half Life & Half Life 2-Both great FPS games that also featured many expansions.

But of course the ones that I like and what other people like are going to be different.

Don't you think there's a reason Halo didn't do too well on PC?

It blew chunks compared to other, better games.

Halo 1 set standards for console shooters, but for first-person shooters in general, it didn't do anything new.

Halo is one of the best console shooters of all time, right next to Doom and Goldeneye. LeonSKennedy4Life I think it's safe to assume what you realy want to say is Killzone 2 over and over.

5.4 - I can tell this guy Hates Halo...hehe
You know halo did what Final Fantasy VII did to JRPGs.

Some rather talk about some game like 10 people played or heard about, rather then that game, that brought it to the Masses and excelled with online multi-player.

Halo all Daylo..

Jason, you ignorant slut...

...Killzone 2 is far from the top 10 best shooters of all time. I do love it, but it's not the best.

You assume that, because I have a PS3, I'm going to say it's the best game ever. I actually have been playing RE5 a lot more.

What a fanboy.

"Halo 1 set standards for console shooters, but for first-person shooters in general, it didn't do anything new. "

Halo introduced regenerating health/shields and changed the whole cover dynamic of the FPS influencing COD4, KZ2, and any other FPS that replaced the static health bar and health packs with a regenerating system.

Halo also introduced the true skill matchmaking system and rank (i.e., pairing up opponents with similar FPS skill sets according to rank) yet again influencing games like COD4, Gears of War 2, and KZ2.

Regenerating health and matchmaking has been used in games prior to Halo and Halo 2, respectively.

Battlefield 2 better be on the list. So many hours spent on that game. BF2 was all about the vehicles, jets, planes, heli, and large scale battles! Players naturally wanted to team up when they play. Unlike some FSP games where it's every man for himself.

I'll be keeping an eye on this list, my interest is peaked for sure. I already can pretty much guess that Doom, System Shock 2 and Half-Life (original) will make the list in some form. I can only hope Daikatana gets number 1 *crosses fingers*.

Haha, Daikatana. I've paid 10 bucks for that crap, and even played it through (yeah, I'm stubborn). The leveldesign in the greek and medieval ages and some weapons weren't half bad, but the rest of the game was ridiculous.

Also, this list already fails with F.E.A.R. on it. It's a good game, but certainly not top10 material. I also bet that the list won't include No one lives forever, Aliens versus Predator or Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, because the author is either too young, or has simply not played that many FPS games.

I agree BF2 definately needs to be on there, it's epic. Anyone ever play SWAT 4? Awesome but often overlooked tactical shooter. Way better than any of the Rainbow6 games. It had so much atmosphere, and it was great the way you could finish a mission without any casualties on either side.

You guys are doing a pretty good job of predicting his list. From what i gathered from him, though, he's seriously convinced Halo is not one of the absolute best FPSes of all time.

And he's played Raven Shield. He's been playing games since he was 5 years old but on mentioning Raven Shield, he simply remarked, "GRAW was better." :P

Republic Commando all the way, underplayed and underappreciated. It's absolutely awesome, possibly the best console shooter in the last 10 years(or of all time).

Possibly the best Star Wars game as well.

yes it's an opinion... in which case people reserve the right to disagree with it (whether it be vocally.. or just pressing disagree)... this is why your getting disagrees, because people DISAGREE with your OPINION e.g don't think DN3D is the best FPS of all time

i know... simple social concepts are HARD!!!

and people... stop crying rivers when you get a few disagrees, come back to me when you make a comment that gets over 100 disagrees (like i have done) and then we'll talk
