Gran Turismo dev looking to expand their horizons?

PCN writes:

Polyphony Digital president Kazunori Yamauchi spoke about his company a bit in this ever changing industry. Of course, he talked quite a bit about Gran Turismo. He then lets loose a bombshell. He says that while Polyphony is exclusively in charge of car games, the company wants to make a new, distinctly different game.

1.2 - Tourist Trophy did pretty well.
And as I recall, became a greatest hits title. Only downside is that it reused GT4's tracks, but the control system was brilliant. Instead of controlling the bike directly (like all the other bike games), you controlled the rider, who in turn controlled the bike.

I'm really hopeful that they make a sequel.

1.3 - I never got Tourist Trophy
I should pick it up now that its cheep.

But, I too would be very interested in seeing what they would come up with. They're one of the best devs in the world and I would have faith in anything they do.

Tourist Trophy was a really good game btw. It had a photo mode on it, and when i look back at the photos i took, the game holds up extremely well in the graphics department

That would be awesome, but if it takes them so long to make GT games, I wonder if there will be compromises made in both titles quality in order to keep their release windows

PD are perfectionists. That is what takes so long, and I say its welcome.

The reason GT5 is taking so long is because they go the extra mile that no other driving simulator developer is willing to go. Mr. Yamauchi is a car enthusiast like no-one else in the gaming industry, and it shows through the labor-of-love that is every GT game. They send prospectors to every single real-life driving course that they are rendering for GT5 and taking thousands of photographs of each course and LITERALLY measuring every inch of the course with measuring tools so that they can render these courses to the greatest degree of reality. They also drive every single car that is represented in the game in order to fully represent the intricacies of each car's acceleration, control, handling, etc. They even record the engine sounds of every single car in the game in multiple stages of revving, etc., so that every car in the game sounds identical to the real-life vehicle in every situation. When the game contains over 500 vehicles and tons of courses, it takes a long time to work everything out so that they can create the most realistic possible simulator of actually driving those cars on those courses.

All of this is detailed in interviews with the development team that can be found on the Blu-Ray version of GT5Prologue.

They are perfectionists and they're attempting to deliver the perfect simulator, so that if you can't afford to drive a Corvette through Picadilly Circus, you'll never get a closer to real-feeling experience than you will by doing it in Gran Turismo 5.

If they were to do a non-simulation based game, it wouldn't take them nearly as long to make, because they wouldn't have the notion of matching reality as a hindrance. Even if they did make another simulation game, I'd still want it, because these guys are amazing developers and anything they put together is bound to be wonderful. I don't care how long it takes, I just want a great game in the end.

I'm confused at all the disagrees. All I did was state facts about the perfectionist nature of Yamauchi and the Polyphony Digital team. All the information I gave about the detail they put into perfecting the simulation and realism of the game, each vehicle, and each course is accurate and can be checked out by watching the development documentaries on the Blu-Ray version of GT5P. I went on to state that the team always does quality work and I'd welcome any new franchise they want to develop. If you disagree with anything I've said, then I'm at a loss.

Don't you mean "Kaz is the Kojima" :-)

Technically it works both ways since both are perfectionists and equally as good as master devs.

I found a copy of Omega Boost at Gamestop last year for 33 cents. The game is like a badass mix between ZOE and StarFox, and I for one would LOVE to see another. And while they are at it, revive Colony Wars!

Wait, correct me if I am wrong but isn't there an Omega Boost on Xbox Live Arcade? I know it's a mech game. Hmm .... this is strange.

Nevermind, it's not Omega Boost, but I swear there is a mech game on XBLA with Omega in it. Made me think.

Bring back Omega Boost Polyphony!! If even as just a PSN title so it won't take you 20 years to do while waiting for real mechs to start flying the skies so you have to go to the manufacturers of said mechs to get the specs and cad files from them like you do now with GT.

You guys do know just because a good developer makes a new IP does not mean it will be good. Just look at what happened to Free Radical. Stop over hyping things not even announced based on developers

A mecha game on PS3 that is not Gundam or Armored Core would be nice, even more if it's developed by Polyphony Digital (until Kojima Prod announces Zone Of The Enders 3).

Well I have no doubt about the fact that Polyphon digital could make pretty good new IP

Having a new game that innovates the way GT did when it was relased could do great for many genres.

as for Gran turismo series...
I am a bit conserned about the fact that their vision of "next gen" differs from mine.

Personaly as a GT fan I didnt like prologue, it was just too similar to the already relased GT games. They need to move up a bit to the direction of Motorstorm and Flatout series and make the enviroment more lively instead of rock sculpture that looks pretty.

If they can overcome this and GT5 will have weather chances, enviroment that chances (if player drives trough the grass there would be some marks of that instead of just dust. It doesnt matter if they will ever get any kind of damage modelling in to the game, but seriously GT5 prologue really lacked in that section.

oh and the online was terrible just plain terrible if you dont count the time trial section which was addictive as ever.

I was thinking that they could start a flight sim series or something. With the amount of effort they put into making cars realistic it would be interesting to see what they would do to aircraft.

Lame. It would be another 3-4 years before it would even see the light of day. They have to finish GT first.

22 - Omega Boost was awesome.
i actually have the eboot for my PSP, and the game still holds up to this day, and is surprisingly hard.

that's the cool thing i was saying before about Sony's first and second party studios; they are always working on two projects, meaning more exclusives for the PS3 in the long run.

short term success is only that; short term.

Sony has ALWAYS thought in the long term, and in the end, it ultimately pays off.

If they worked with GG on a FPS! GRAPHICS AND GAMEPLAY WOULD BE OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD.

I just they put as much effort into a new IP as they do with the GT series.

I personally consider KZ2 a far superior achievement to GT5:P in terms of graphics. GT games look very static with little interaction compared to Killzone 2, I'm not criticising Gran Turismo one bit mind.

24 - if its a car game
then its not diferent. the interesting thing in gaming industry is that there are very few perfectionist. i want to see perfectioonist more like Blizzard , Polyphiny and kojima.
look at how much time one blizzard game takes and man when it comes its balance. GT is the same. MGS is the same.
i want to see some studios who makes perfect shooters(i think killzone will prove or EPIC is doing good job), Fighting game(Tekken was but now they delayed it to full 1 year for what $$$?), and RPG(i think square is the one but now they are money hungry).

we need these perfectionist in the industry when their games are announced ppl know that this is going to be huge and critical and commercial success is on the door of these developers.

man sometime i want to be part of this industry because perhaps i m software engineer.
thanks

Blizzard are probably the best development team in the world if you ask me, every game is so polished and well balanced. 3 superb franchises in Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo, they deserve all the success they get.
