God of War III May Be Huge, But It's No MMO

Though Sony bandies about the usual dramatic claims of "jaw-dropping visuals," "epic battles," "stunning graphics," an "elaborate plot," "world-changing scenarios," "fluid, life-like characters" and "unmistakable realism" - along with a quadrupling of texture resolution and "depth of scope" - God of War III will still only be big enough for one inflated Spartan ego.

According to Sony, "God of War 3 is a single-player game."

While the only thing I care about is the single-player, I have to admit that when I get excited when I think about an online arena fighting mode where you can choose your god/character/monster and fight it out tournament style with other players. Kratos vs. Kratos battles online would be just awesome in my opinion. I mean, the mechanics of the games combat are already very fighting-game-esque. What with the combos, the slow/high-powered and quick/low-powered moves, the throwing/grappling moves, the guarding & countering mechanics... it could really work, I say!

I think online could work. Call it death in the arena or stadium or whatever you will and have the gods duke it out one on one, two on two to the death... wouldn't hurt.. but yeah single player would be best suited for this game..

They should add a killathon(Horde mode) with leaderboards, that would be cool. But God of war could stay as a single player game and i would be fine.

O.k..... who the heck would have thought that God of War 3 would be an MMO? The 2 previous God of War games were single player only, so I would pretty much expect God of War 3 to be the same way. I don't care if there isn't Online because God of War 3 doesn't need it. God of War has always been about the Single Player experience and I would rather have Sony Santa Monica focus on making the Single Player as strong as possible without getting distracted by Multi-player.

Since you don't really have any allies that fight by your side in the God of War games, I really don't see how Online could even be implemented. For me, the God of War games had plenty of replayability and I'm sure God of War 3 will have plenty too.

online for GoW3 is perhaps time trials of sorts, like face bosses or stages and you'd have to beat it as fast as you can and your time can be put up on a ranking board. thats the only thing i can think that can work well with this game.

GOW3 doesn't need to be an mmo, it wouldn't be that good. Why would I say that? Well you know how mmo's only have the same generic attacks for the different weapons people choose. Also some of us would be upset at this, the final game is an MMO with less action.

Multiplayer is good but can we keep some games singleplayer and be happy with that. GOWIII, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, and others have been knocked for no MP but they shouldn't have it. Keep a great SP campaign for some games as the focus and forget MP. It's not for every game and shouldn't always be required.

GOW3 will be massive. Just because it's not a persistant online world doesn't mean it's one of the biggest games coming out in '09.
I don't even consider WoW a game, it's a lifestyle.
GOW3 is a game, and the last opinion I want to hear is that from people who have played nothing but MMOSs for years now and are COMPLETELY out of touch with the rest of the gaming world.
I work with a WoW fanatic, he thinks he's a "gamer" yet the only game he has played in the last 3 years is WoW. What a joke.

Why can't the author just compare it to ANOTHER single player game? to be honest it's not that hard, basing a single player next to an MMO isn't really that balanced. MMOs change constantly, some single players don't. Along with change - comes the change of opinion so... Long writing short, should have just compared it with another single-player game or perhaps just done a comparison to other single player games [could have taken quite a few from this gen.]

Rice, I saw your point and I saw the point the guy was making but as what's his name stated before it's like making an article or rather a hidden slap at GoW.

Plus when he said big the only thing I did not get was [ was he talking about the entire scope of the game (Such everything involved with the game) or just the paths that one is able to take to complete the game]. This is when I start thinking to deep into it, because as I said before it seems like a hidden slap at GoW. Also I keep going back to the comparison of MMO because he actually had the idea of putting this:

I can name countless great games that just do not need multiplayer to be awesome, and God of War is really close to the top of that list.

Who knows maybe I am a dinosaur who has been playing videogames for too long, but I am completely statisfied with a game if the single player is great, then again I am one of those people who thinks a good story is the most important aspect of any game and most of the time when a developer adds multiplayer to a game, the Single Player suffers for it.
