I'm not hating on GTA IV at all, I have the game for 360 (for the DLC) and going to get it for PC for the mods. I just feel there are much better games out there this year. We can all probably admit that GTAIV was overhyped, again that's not saying that it is a bad game.

it's the best game i've played all year and it's probably the 1st game I played that really felt like a true next gen game.

LBP is my 1st runner up

GTA4 doesn't deserve this award at all total let down , this game took a step back form what R* accomplished with GT:SA ..it just got boring fast , the online kept me playing this game during the summer but I haven't touched it in awhile , im gonna keep playing it just because of the trophies

I consider GTAIV to feature the best writing; its story was not the usual, hum-drum, save this or that; not the corny revenge story, but a masterpiece of immigrant tales, where two cousins discover one another in the process. Was the gameplay perfect? No. But the story, in my opinion, far exceeds that of MGS4, which demonstrates nothing different from the past, except a revamped presentation.

Not to mention, the cutscenes in GTAIV were *awesome* in wit; The Vance missions were especially iconic.

Of course, others might disagree; nevertheless, GTAIV should be considered a powerhouse in the Story Department, even if some of you regard it in a less favorable light than the *Supreme Title of the Universe*. Imagine if I waltzed into this thread, proclaiming how awesome Fable 2 is (its so freaking awesome!). Suddenly, people would begin asking me for proof, or verification as to how it signifies a good story. On what grounds then do of all you heathens claim MGS 4 to be a masterful portrayal of story telling?

Correct me, if I am wrong, but does not MGS4 revolve two rivals, who must overcome each other in order to overcome themselves? Does not the main plot revolve around the destruction of the world (yet again). Or is it the fact that it includes titanic machines, with black chicken legs; or was it the revelation of Big Mama that got your goats?

Is that what makes MGS such a compelling story? For none of these plot devices are new, or exotic. They are imaginative, yes, but not necessarily cohesive. Of course, this is my opinion. So let's hear yours.

if a game has a # in the title,gears,fallout,gta etc it should not be given the same weight as a new ip.
the bottom line, the game can be great but the number means its more of the same. all things being equal give the goty award to a new ip.

actually im gonna have to agree with bigkev...gta will most likely get it considering its a multiplatform title that everyone was able to play and it was both critically and commercially well received...i personally dont think it deserves goty but the reality of the situation is that it will probably get it but i wont lose hope...heres to metal gear taking it home!

I own a PS3 and I could care less about DLC for GTA4 , the game just wasn't that great as we were led to believe by early reviews.

The SP campaign got boring thanks to repetitive mission structure , the Soundtrack sucked , the driving mechanics was a complete mess , and after you complete the game there isn't anything to do in the game other than get annoyed by some chick and take her bowling..

Online was fun for a month or 2 , GT:SA was way better than this , had more content and replay value...

So dont try to bring fanboyism into this even 360 owners will agree that it wasn't that great

well I did spend $60 on this game might as well get my money's worth plus I wanted to see how the story would pan out, since it's the only good thing about the game..

GTA:Vice City had the best soundtrack for any GTA game IMO...GTA4 soundtrack was very lackluster even though I could buy songs online..it still sucked.

The driving mechanics weren't that great it needed work and it didn't even feel realistic felt like you were driving on ice sometimes..lol

The game doesn't suck it's just not really that good either , and it's not the highest rated game ever ..nice try though..

I have to agree with Danja, GTA4 just wasn't that good compared to past GTAs. Doesn't mean its a bad game.

The funny part is you try to blame the DLC... yet NO ONE has played it yet, we've seen but a few screens that tell us almost NOTHING except "bikes" and yet you expect gamers to be "jealous?"

Sure, if the DLC adds Katanas, fixes online spawning and sync issues, adds planes, 20 more cars... then I MIGHT be jealous, but as it stands, GTA4 was a disappointment compared to San Andreas, despite its strong lead character and technical merits.

You basically just said yourself that GTA IV doesn't deserve to be rated so highly by pointing out that SA might have been better. Don't pretend that it's flawless either. I personally like the driving (for the most part) as it was more realistic than the past iterations, but the game is far from perfect.

Do you mean to tell me you enjoyed taking your fake friends out to play pool/get drunk/to eat after the first time? Do you not wonder where Michelle went off to, in what I consider a huge plot whole (and probably the most obvious plot twist ever thanks to her retarded dialogue)? Do you not think the online is rather boring and lags like hell when anything beyond a gunshot happens? The fact that they put like 2 clothing options in and only like 5 doors open doesn't bother you? What about the fact that the entire driving force of the game is money, when money means absolutely nothing beyond the 3rd mission?

It's not the perfect game that reviewers made it out to be, and definitley doesn't deserve GOTY. I'd rather have Gears 2 take it, when I don't own a 360 and haven't even played it . Maybe people were just let down by the hype and it has nothing to do with DLC that won't even hit until next year. Imagine that!

I actually have it on 360. Wasn't as good as I thought it would of been. The experience isn't as long lasting as San Andreas and the story wasn't all that good either. I never finished it but I'm close to beating it.

I don't know what's so hard to accept that GTAIV was disappointing for some people. What's funny is that you even point out a reason why I was disappointed.

regardless of personal opinions or how much used copies are at gamestop. The fact remains. GTA4 ruthlessly destroyed sales records in the entertainment industry.

When a game does that and is being covered by the media big boys CNN, BBC etc. because of said sales records. No matter what your personal opinion is, when ANY game accomplishes this REGARDLESS of what you think of it. It's GOTY.

Mostly the panel at IW as well as consultants they would ask and so forth. They are experts with more gaming knowledge and history under their belts then a good amount of people here. Don't believe me go look at their retrospectives and all the gaming history you can get from those. They are experts believe it or not.

Edit: I mean they do it for a living and are holding the most official gaming awards on Spike TV. might as well say "What does they academy know about film" The answer is a lot.

Edit2 : Experts like Ngai Croal, Dave Jaffe, Dave Sirlin, Patcher and many other people more then likely had a hand in this. Mainly unbiased and fair people.

In my personal opinion LBP deserves it for the innovations it brought to the table. MGS4 is an extremely close second, only because MGO didn't keep me interested for long enough (although it was fun while it lasted).

It should win, but it probably won't. If MGS4 wins it instead I wouldn't mind, though.

it's got more game than most games.... not many games are perpetuated to cult status and replayed for eons for faster times and more impressive style

the game's controls, visuals, bosses, diversity.. everything

i am actually a fan of the splinter cell franchise

but id have to say that mgs4 really trumps any of the splinter cell games in story telling and uniqueness as well as versatility. i actually think that splinter cell has historically had better core gameplay mechanics for a stealth-shooter than mgs, but the mgs games of old werent really focused as heavily on stealth as splinter cell. splinter cell is about staying in the shadows, an mgs is about hiding around the corners, completely different stealthing tactics. however, i did like how mgs4 kind of took a page out of splinter cells book, in terms of the camera angles and how they approach stealthing.

that being said, im still a bigger fan of the mgs series, splinter cell is a bit hyper-realistic, mgs is more charming

Not only do i own it but i played through it twice - 1st time took me 9 hours to complete - 18 hours all together since there is 4.5 hours of great cut scenes and 4.5 hours of long drawn out boring dialog that was seriously putting me to sleep. 2nd time playing it i finished it in 5 hours and this time i cut through all the cut scenes i could have. I have posted many times before links that show the game can be finished in 3-4 hours and is on a 50 gig Blu-Ray disc.

Anyone who things MGS4 has more gameplay than most games are clearly Blinded by fanboyism and ignorance. MGS4 is not the great game heyheyhey and the rest of the Sony fish head's would like you to believe.

And another game that i enjoyed more than MGS4 that can be stealthy or "balls-out vehemently" - Splinter Cell say "Hi" (and it is longer gameplay wise and fits on a DVD9.)

lol i agree completely, but pray to god it doesnt happen. i have to point out the the vgas are hosted by spike tv, which is a hyper-masculine testosterone driven sausage fest, much like the whole gears series. high chance that theyll vote it the winner.

personally i think lbp SHOULD win on (re)innovation alone, because its doing things to advance the industry.

i WANT mgs4 to win, it was the most entertaining game this year, to me at least.

i think gta4 still has a decent shot, because it was critically praised, although not so much by the masses, and its multiplat and they dont want to alienate too many fans of either system.

but please, no gears. were not freaking monkeys anymore. lets choose a winner accordingly.
