PS3 Sales Double Week-to-Week in Japan

Strong performance of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 leads to big sales for the PS3 in Japan.

The last week of November may have been hugely important for retailers in the U.S., but it seems Sony saw their biggest gains (relatively) in Japan. For the week of November 24 to November 30, the PlayStation 3 sold 34,978 units in Japan, more than doubling the 17,436 units it sold the week prior (via PS3Fanboy). What caused this sudden surge? The release of Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, it seems. Consider it the Madden of Japan, because lord knows Madden sure isn't the Madden of Japan.
PES 2009 debuted in second place on the Japanese sales charts, selling 168,405 copies. Meanwhile, after being released in the U.S. in mid-October, it failed to crack the top 10 in the November NPD report -- the latest indication that the United States continues to defy the world in its nearly complete indifference to soccer.

I think some people love thier ego a little too much now a days. It's only a matter of time before people are going to get sick of this kind of journalism and start seeing the systems for what they really are... a piece of plastic that plays cool games!

It seems like all publications are like this... and it really doesn't make sense. The PS1 and PS2 were both great consoles, the latter having some of the best games ever made and now they hate on the PS3 but the 360 is given support after their terrible start.

I understand the 360 and Wii are doing well but seriously, don't show obvious bias against a console that had a great heritage to its name.

2.1 - I have been wondering the same thing for a while now.
Why would they be so blatantly bias against the PS3? I mean, they can't even hide it.

I swear, there are better writers in the N4G comments then there are at most of these big sites.

3.9 - TECHNICALLY...
The original and formal name is Football, not Soccer.

Why!?

Because unlike American-Football(formal name, unknown to most Americans), THEY ACTUALLY USE THEIR FOOT TO PLAY THROUGH THE GAME!!!
Amazing, I know.

Couldn't they have been more original?
Like "Tackle-ball", or "Pass-and-Run-Ball", or "Run-and-Stop-every-3-sec onds-ball"???

But no, they go and steal another sport's name, and make they're own version of Rugby, but boring and much less team oriented.

Yeah cuz watching the ball go back and forth, and back and worth, and maybe one or two scores in 90 minutes is so freaking fun, right?

I loved playing SOCCER, but watching it is a bore fest.

The fact that they dont score so much makes you appreciate the game, and how they play. You can appreciate every part of the game, and when they finally do score, its like the best thing ever. If they score every minute then its like, goal.... well thats kinda good. Its not like, OOOOMMMMGG!!! YEEEEEEEESSS YEEEEEEEEESS!!! thats football(no not American football, or should i say handball?) alright.

Blame the brits. They're the ones who named it soccer.

And the official term isn't football it's association football to differentiate from rugby football (wikipedia rules! prove it wrong!) Soccer is slang from association.

I don't get the criticism of Futbol American because players don't use their feet as often. Tell me wtf a cricket has to do with that game?

Go Miami Dolphins!

I grew up in Australia and we have Australian rules Football. Its like rugby. So as far as I'm concerned there are 3 Football games.

U.S. Go Cowboys
Australia. Go West Coast Eagles
World Wide. I don't have a football team.

Hmmm, I LOVE my PS3 and I support Sony, but this doesn't make any sense to me. You would figure that the console with the most RPG games would sell more in Japan, but this is far from the case in Japan. The 360 hasn't penetrated the 1 million mark and the PS3 is about to break the 3 million mark....*ahem* GO SONY, lol. And yes, I know the Wii has raped competition XD

@Bladestar,

The Japanese always show favor to games from Japanese studios like PES 2009, a Konami game. Games from Japanese studios are the games that mainly sell down there.... The Japanese literally ignore games from non-Japanese studios even if the game is good and it's a shame really. If LBP was developed by some other Japanese studio instead of Media Molecule, I have no doubt that it would have sold tons more in Japan.

9 - Pirate Thom...
That milk comment was, quite frankly, the funniest thing I have ever read in ANY internet forum. There is not word in the English language that could possibly describe how funny I found that.

And, as a proud Canadian, I've gotta say that milk in bags is awesome. It tastes 115% baggier.

believe anyone would want to play this game on a ps3. Take a corner kick and it looks like the corner flag has steps its soooo jaggie. The japs really stick by konami, but myself and many more pes lovers have gone over to fifa. Is it just me or do the multi-format games use AA on the ps3 ????, as i aint seen it yet.

12.1 - Honestly.
Ive been playing Pes for years and i can tell you that this year there is only one winner. Fifa 09.The pes series has stood still, poor sound effects ,terrible jaggie graphics, arcade like gameplay, the kits and names are as bad as ever but can be patched, but honestly get fifa this year. Hope konami get a kick up the ass they might have needed, and be back again next season.
