Why I Traded Call of Duty: World at War

Loot Ninja writes:

"Ok, ok. Just before any of you decide to chop me up for the title, shut the fuck up and listen to what I have to say for one second. It's only fair that I get to defend my reasoning. Sit back, get yourself a cup of coffee and some Advil, and be prepared to either punch your monitor in anger, or cheer with acknowledgment.

First off, let's get something out of the way before I'm pummeled with radiant curses and insults towards my mother's sexual sanctity. Those of us who convolute our time in online gaming should just acknowledge that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the king as far as multiplayer goes. Forget Halo, Resistance, Gears of War and whatever else you think is the best multiplayer game; numbers show that CoD4 is dominating the online genre on consoles (except on the Wii, of course). So get off your high horse and join the revolution."

1 - Can't Say I Fully Agree
Basically I see World At War as the job Infinity Ward would have done if they had placed their gane in WWII instead of going modern. While I think IF would have been even better than Treyarch did with the game, they did incldue a pretty cool zombie mode which I really enjoy so hats off to that at very least.

I was VERY skeptical at first of the whole return to WWII thing but I am having a blast with the multi. Once you reach the appropriate levels and get the gun add-ons, its a blast.

Nothing beats COD-4,nothing. Counter Strike on the PC might come close but if anything Killzone-2 looks close to dethrone it but we'll see how that turns out.

2.1 - Counter-Strike PC
You have not embraced CS then if you think CoD4 is better. A 1998 game that's still alive and kicking, says alot already. Back that up with endless mods and 64 player support and well......CoD what? Someone can make a CoD4 mod for CS and that would probably still be better than CoD4. Graphics do not make a game, if you're thinking that's what KZ2 will do. Sure they help alot, but ultimately the gameplay will decide whether a game is great or not.

Counter strike is actually a sloppy game based off a mediocre engine. The way the community plays it and mods it is what makes it amazing. But don't call it the best game ever when the game itself is clearly outdated.

And I've never seen a CS game come anywhere near 64 players. Don't invent BS.

2.3 - Agreed.
Although I will say that CS was a good game, it's pretty much dated. Though I'm not going to slam it, I think that there are much better online titles that offer better online play. I gotta give it to them, though. They've been around for ages and still manage to remain up top even with all these new titles being released. Sure as hell the game is outdated, but it holds a freakin' strong support from PC gamers. You got it totally right, matchgrade.

If you haven't seen a 64 player CS game then you don't know WTF you're talking about or you haven't played CS in a decade or so. There are plenty of 64 players CS servers out there, just look them up on Steam. There are even 100 players CS servers too believe it or not, but most of those are only up during LAN events.

Have you ever playd CS? I haven't played it much since 2004/2005 when it first came, but even then, there were lag free 64 player online matches that graphically, looks better then than resistance 2 looks now.

I've played COD:WAW multiplayer for a good chunk of my time and i can say that it is no COD4. It does really just seem like a filler game. The zombie mode is something i really did like, but since my internet connection isn't the best ever i often can't find a room to join and even when i try to host one no one joins my room. Personally i'm thinking that in a couple of months i'll trade COD:WAW in, gotta make room for Killzone 2

I think the numbers are wrong though. Call of Duty 4 was king for a while, but as far as the 360 goes that crown went back to Halo 3 a while back. Gears 2 sits above COD4 and COD5 too.

Below are the official numbers provided by Major Nelson for Xbox Live activity for which games. As for which game is the superior multiplayer it's a matter of opinion really. Personally I always though the unbalanced helicopter was a bit of a con, while I have always enjoyed Halo 3, Gears of War and COD4 in equal amounts. When I bored of one I would switch to the other.

1 Halo 3
2 Gears of War 2
3 CoD: World at War
4 Call of Duty 4
5 GTA IV
6 Fable II
7 Left 4 Dead
8 Madden NFL 09
9 Fallout 3
10 FIFA 09

First of all, he bought it for the PS3. So Halo isn't even an issue. Secondly, I'm pretty sure he means platform wide. If you added up all the people playing COD 4 across all major plats, 360, PS3, and PC, then it is, by far the most popular online game.

Forgetting numbers for a sec, as comparing a multi-platform title against an exclusive like Halo 3 is always going to be unfair.

The article reads that COD4 is the better game for multiplayer. Which I just wanted to point out is only a matter of opinion which is why games like Halo 3 and Gears of War provide ample staying power with their collection of fans sticking with those titles.

Regardless, he didn't buy it for the 360 so you listing THIS WEEK'S numbers has absolutely no bearing on what he's saying. Personal opinion aside, no game has more players than COD 4. Which has beaten Halo for the better part of a year and was on top longer than Halo 3 ever was.

Its nice to see some real talk about this game instead of fanboys giving it unanimous praise. Personally the single player is the highlight of this game but still doesnt touch Bioshock or Dead Space.

Co-op is easily trumped by R2 co-op.

And even with all 2008 releases I've still got to say CoD4 is the multiplayer king.

So what does this mean? CoD 4.5 is a good package but none of its elements escalate it to GotY status and certainly not to the legendary status that CoD4 achieved.

I had never played a Treyarch game until COD5, so I didn't have any previous conceptions about them as a developer.

Saying that, I rented, and played through 3/4 of the game. I will admit it did have one or two little niggles, but on the whole, of what I played, I enjoyed myself and had fun.

PS. I played the PS3 version (not that it makes any difference, just for reference)

17 - COD4 dominated my life for 3 months.
I could not wait to get home to play it... I stayed up late, got up early, and when I was asleep, I dreamt about it. I remember thinking "this is what it must feel like to be addicted to crack."

That said, eventually I got my fill and the cravings subsided. I don't have the same level of addiction with COD5, but that's not to say it's worse than COD4. The games themselves are very similar so I see COD5 in the same light as COD4- was once addicted, still like it, but it doesn't rule my every waking (or otherwise) moment.

Treyarch did a fine job incorporating the WWII theme into the game. However, since the look and feel of COD5-- and by that I mean the menus, multiplayer setup, etc.-- so closely resembles COD4, it's natural for players to feel as if they are in the latter stages of their "relationship" with the game. Not a bad thing, just something to be expected.

19 - The author reminds me of Uwe Boll
This is probably the most pompous and pretentious gaming article I've ever read. I agree with the points, but the author is really full of it.

"Ok, ok. Just before any of you decide to chop me up for the title, shut the f*ck up and listen to what I have to say for one second. It’s only fair that I get to defend my reasoning."
Yeah, we're listening. That's why we're reading your article. No reason at all to cuss out your audience indiscriminantly in the first sentence.

"Forget Halo, Resistance, Gears of War and whatever else you think is the best multiplayer game; numbers show that CoD4 is dominating the online genre on consoles (except on the Wii, of course)."
The NUMBERS also showed that CoD5 was the best game on both PS3 and 360 a month ago, but you don't seem to think so, do you?

"So get off your high horse and join the revolution."
...What?

"Now, let’s get back on track. Call of Duty: World at War. *Sigh* Where to begin… When I first heard about Treyarch developing the next Call of Duty installment after a drooling experience with CoD4, I almost kicked the be-jesus out of the dog. The thought of having PETA riot towards the death penalty because I kicked the hell out of my pooch in aggravation wasn’t something I was looking forward to. My Yorkie is still intact, my sanity, however, that’s something totally different."
You wrote an entire paragraph to tell us that you were angry about Treyarch developing. Oh wow, you're a badass. We're so glad your dog is okay, because we totally believed you'd kill your dog over a videogame, and after that scary rant we'll know better than to ever piss you off.

"Although, to me, it felt as if Treyarch was just playing it safe going with something they already knew and had perfected with their previous CoD titles. Of course, that didn’t stop anyone from spewing egregious comments with regards to Treyarch’s decision with going WWII again."
Are you going to talk about why you didn't like the game or just bash everything and everyone because you're a moping crybaby?

"Who wouldn’t want to kick Nazi and Japanese ass with Jack Bauer? Anyone who retracts this feeling is just an idiot."
I don't watch 24. No time for it during school. I guess I'm an idiot. Sorry.

"As much as WWII games have been done, this one took the cake with the story. I would have loved to see Omaha beach done with this engine."
Because good engines definitely make good stories.

"Not really a lot of change, if you ask me. Before the lot of you even consider uttering how much of a stupid f*ck I am and how much oral sex my mother has endured, take the time to seriously analyze the game."
Right, because everyone who likes the game doesn't think about it or contemplate why.

"I personally (<– keyword for you retards who don’t understand the meaning of an “opinion”) feel that it was not as good as CoD4."
Again, uncalled-for. If you want people to keep reading your articles, you should stop calling them retards every chance you get.

"Let’s see some new ideas and new wars, for crying out loud."
Let's hear some new opinions, for crying out loud.

"What about a CoD in the American Revolution?"
Will you stop being an idiot?

"Or even taking CoD to Somalia during the Black Hawk Down incident?"
Ooh, that's fresh. (See Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare)

"I think I’ll go back to CoD4 now and hand out ass-whoopings like sandwiches at a homeless food drive."
You do that.
