Burnout: Big Surf DLC no longer free

After the insane amounts of free Burnout Paradise DLC that Criterion has released, it's hardly surprising that the developer has decided to get paid for its next batch of downloadable treats.

The upcoming Big Surf Island update for the ball-out racer was previously touted as free content, like previous DLC packages, but Criterion has confirmed that it will instead be "premium paid-for content".

It didn't reveal a price, but to be fair the update looks bloody brilliant so we wouldn't mind handing over a few quid.

2 - alas,
ok we already got the bikes and weather pack free but
they should keep their promises, because what they now did is lying.

for some people this 'free' island was the final push to buy their game.

Dude, they did free DLC for A YEAR. One entire calendar year. Don't you think maybe it's time they started making money? I'll buy it without hesitation or regret.

Their original vision for the isalnd would have allowed it to be free.

If you read around you'll see that they have now stated that they have added so much more content than they originally thought - they have to charge for it.

Rather than complaining about lying, why not vote with your wallet and not buy it.

Burnout Paradise has been the best DLC supported game this generation.

Anyone who loves the game would have no issue with Criterion for charging for this. It's certainly no 'horse armour'!!

When they first started talking about it, they said "maybe".

Don't know what twisted it to "absolutely" but you're right, it wasn't meant to be free. Also, when they released the bike packs, I think they stated in a podcast that the island wasn't free of charge.

4 - Well from them personally I don't mind paying a little extra
First off, unlike many developers this generation, Criterion put REAL effort and NO excuses into making their game. And the result was this wonderful game that still is selling at a good rate a full year later.

Second, they've been giving us free content for at least a year. It's not like they've been nickel and diming us on stuff that is ALREADY on game discs ( hence, namco bandai).

It's a fair decision after all the free DLC they give us during one full year.
Now I'm just afraid that they will stop making great DLC at all and maybe move on another project.

Maybe you haven't noticed but Criterion =/= EA Redwood Studios. I'm surprised that EA gave Criterion so much latitude with free DLCs. Criterion is one studio I would happily support. They know how to handle DLC. and not make the customers feel ripped off.

In-fact, I'd argue that we've been ripping them off! That's how great of a value Burnout Paradise is, and at $30 on the PSN as well!!

IMO Criterion are doing what every dev should strive to do. They really care about their fans and have given a whole lot and asked for very little.
I'm DEFINATELY buying this pack, they earned my money.

16 - I used to love Burnout...
And even though I loved the demo for Paradise,I haven't bought it.
But I definitely will, and you can bet I'll be getting this DLC.

It's been mentioned a lot, but I don't think any other developer has done what Criterion has been doing. I look at this, and I look at all the useless "AWESOME WEAPON PACK! YOU GET A RIFLE WITH AN EXTRA PAINT JOB!!!" packs out there, and well...

Criterion, you have my money. You are an example to the industry, IMO.

Btw, I hope they're secretly working on Black 2 :)

Criterion, you've earned my respects and I'd happily support you. 1 year of free DLC that can amount to a brand new gaming experience, $30 DD version on the PSN store with all included. I can't find a bigger bang for the buck racing game than Burnout Paradise.

Too bad Burnout doesn't have split-screen.

18 - Judging By Past DLC
My guess is that if they are going to charge for this dlc then it's going to be far superior then previous download content for the game to justify the charge, and considering previous dlc is far superior than most other games offerings then I think we're in for a treat.

Other developers creating a new island would might try and release this as a brand new game at full price. I'm looking at you activision with COD5 basically being a world war 2 add on pack for COD4 but sold at full retail price. (from what I've heard)

i don't mind paying dlc if the devs actually continued to put effort and adding stuff to the game (which seems to be the case with burnout.). What really ticks me off, if all these cheap, 2 weeks later, add ons such as new costumes and such that we all know were available on release ( I'm looking at you Soul Caliber and Dead Space, among others).

Don't care that they're charging for it.

I got the game pretty cheap, they've supported the game free for a long time, they've given both consoles equal support.

I will buy this because it's the first time they've actually charged for content, they haven't tried to nickle and dime as quickly as possible and have added more to the game for free than most developers add at cost.

Time to support developers who care about the consumers.
