Confession: I had fun playing Resistance 2's single-player campaign

One of Sarcasticgamer.com's writers actually enjoyed the single player campaign of Resistance 2. Wha?

From the article: ""Resistance 2? received a lot of pre-release hype. The highly-anticipated sequel was quickly labeled a paramount exclusive in the PlayStation 3's 2008 lineup. Though the game has received high praise from most critics, some in the gaming press have voiced their displeasure with the single-player campaign. Garnett Lee unleashed a passionate rant on a recent episode of the 1UP Yours podcast; our very own Lono expressed his displeasure on Episode 63 of The Sarcastic Gamer Podcast.

After digesting numerous opinions, I finally joined the second offensive against the Chimera this past week. My thoughts are after the jump."

I loved the Single player campaign in R2 and the storyline keeps getting better all the time. As far as online goes, I think its OK, not great.

I'm just really surprised that the online mode gets more praise over the single player campaign. For online, I prefer CoD: WaW (10 or so online competative modes, 3 or 4 co-op modes and a great rank and perk system). Resistance 2 online has only 5 competative modes and the co-op is dissapointing, having to find a new room after you have completed the level.

CoD:WaW also has more maps, 10 or 11 maps I think, whereas R2 has 5 or 6 maps online.

R2 is like a good wine. It gets better with age. (The further you are in the campaign or the more you play the MP).

Its a single player I would like to beat again. Alot of SP campaigns get so boring its a chore to complete let alone play again. The MP keeps me busy though for now.

The question is, "Who didnt enjoy single player?"

I mean, especially the WTF part in the end.

2 - Here's how I would rate the last 2 big releases from Sony and Microsoft:
Resistance 2 singplayer:7/10
Resistance 2 multiplayer/co-op:9/10

Gears of War 2 singplayer:7/10
Gears of War 2 multiplayer/co-op:9/10

Both have weak singleplayer campaigns, both have a strong multiplayer component.

I'd say the opposite for GoW2, i think the story mode was that games strongest point simply because the multiplayer had not changed enough for it to be considered fresh, i played the first GoW online forever so yeah, it was just like playing the game game with a few updates and better graphics.

I don't play online so SP campaigns are paramount to my experience.

I'm almost done with it, and I enjoy it. I think it doesn't match the level of R:FOM (one of my favorite games this gen bar none) but it's enjoyable.

GeOW2 is next.

2.7 - I'm not really into multiplayer...
That said, I am amazed by how much I enjoy the multiplayer in R2 considering I didn't like R1 multiplayer, actually considering nothing I really like this multiplayer.
At first it was kind of chaotic in the 60 player, but once I got my bearing and got use to the levels(only played Chicago & Orick) it was really good and strategy filled. The SP is lacking compared to the original and for some reason I'm finding it difficult probably because there's to much space between playing it.

Single player is suprisingly FUN, and personally that's the most critical thing. I enjoy and spend the most time with the games I find the most entertaining, and I am loving everything R2 offers, online and offline.

I miss the british chick narration. I always imagined a hot blonde british chick with bad teeth just narrating it from somewhere ...

ok i don't but it's still different because of that.

5.1 - me too!!! (SPOILER!)
I'm having fun but some of the levels are pissing me off because of the difficulty of the cheapness. For instance, the part where you and the Dr. are running from the swarm. I must've died 10 times to get passed that part.

I don't think its the difficulty per se. Its maybe in some ways, you just will die. Simply because there's always a moment of surprise. So, either you play it very carefully and expect to be run over, or you go the trial and error approach. Some people call that "unbalanced", I like it. It keeps the whole game fresh. You never know what you can expect after the next scene in the level. Its not that it wouldn't be beatable. Its just you _will_ die, at least once. BTW: Anybody here ever beat the arcade mode ? (3 lives only ?) I died 106 times on Normal :)

I couldn't agree more. I have died more times in this game compared to other fps.

The beginning of the Chicago level and the escape with the Dr. are two places I had to replay multiple times. The escape level especially was tough when the Titan(s) (sometimes it was one, another time it was two) popped out of nowhere and smacked me down.

My favorite game on the PS3 so far.
Good story, nothing revolutionary.
Great graphics, once again nothing revolutionary
Excellent MP, and I do believe that it has the best MP options of most games.

It's amazing how the people are dissecting the single player campaign on R2 and its receiving some lower scores because of it. Yet Halo 3 which had a very sub-par story didn't get the same treatment. I remember them actually making excuses about Halo 3's story. It's fine to pick apart the story but it should be the same for all shooters.

9.1 - well
I can actually remember most of the characters in the Halo series. Other than Hale, I can't honestly remember too many of the people from Resistance or R2. Neither has a hugely memorable story, but the Halo one seems more memorable to me overall.

That said, I definitely had fun with R2 campaign so far. I'm not quite finished with it yet, but I have been enjoying the ride so far, and I love the boss fights. There is a lot of trial and error. I died a lot. But there was nothing game breaking about it. You just always have to be on your toes. It definitely a step above other 1st person shooters that have come out this year imo, and the co-op and stuff gives it the edge as a complete package.

there is no such thing as consistency with video game reviews. no magic formula for ratings. some games just get preferential treatment because they have celebrity like status.
my only complaint about the r2 campaign is it was too short.

news of the day:halo has a story
did not know that.

10 - Campaign RULED!
I have spent more time on the campaign than both the coop and the competitive. I LOVE IT! It is action packed and I thought that the story line and characters are much better than the 1st. I don't think I finished very many of the narative parts in the 1st one because of how boring they were.

i loved this game. singleplayer was really fun so i dunno where the hate comes from. i honestly enjoyed dying as much as i did on NORMAL, it never got frustrating though, except when i fought the cracken, that was gay cuz hed kill you even when you dodge. but anyway how dope was that bug swarm thing in the canyon caves, to be able to put like 5000 different bug chimera in the swarm and animate i was impressive. plus the multiplayer is addictive as hell and the only complaint i have is i can never a weapon i like to play with over and over on competetive, i die A LOT. and in co op the titans somtimes get buggy and walk around in circles

11.1 - Agreed...
The single player campaign was a good time with a good story. (I'm on my second play-through now) Although online is what really impressed me about Resistance 2.

The online co-op is great. Getting in with a full party of eight and taking on huge swarms of chimera while completing objectives is incredibly addictive.

Online competitive is pretty sweet as well. And with the levels/rank bonus system online, it's just as addictive as CoD4 was (for me at least ;-)

There are some glitches online, but Insomniac is good about getting things patched quickly. Solid game, lots of fun on and off-line.

I loved the single-player campaign on this game. I personally found it a lot more enjoyable than R:FOM. They really upped the ante on the enemy AI, I seriously died a few times from a Chimera doing a serpentine run through my onslaught of bullets only to have him bum-rush me and melee me to death.

I can see what he's saying about Capelli, he was a very interesting character and *SPOILER* judging from the ending if there's a third installment I can see him being the main character.

Wait....THIS was in the article? Because I never saw it anywhere in the actual article.

Seems like JSA didn't learn from the FIRST time he tried to interject his own opinions into someone else's mouth. At least he made a better effort the first time he did so. This time, he seemed to not even try.

JSA, word of advice: Next time you submit an article, unless you had a hand in writing it on the site you found it from, leave your opinions out of the article summary and put it as a comment instead.
