Best PlayStation 3 games of 2008

"For the first two years of its life, the PS3 has been like the smart kid who doesn't know how to dress; PS3 has advanced technology in spades but has been hit and miss with great games to show it all off.

2008 is the year that PS3 hit its stride. Developers are getting a handle on the PS3's relatively complex hardware, and multi-platform games often look best on Sony's Blu-ray machine. Exclusive games are the pièce de résistance, and some of the year's best were PS3-only."

MSNBC compiled a great list, and its really great to see that they included Valkryia Chronicles in there. Game really deserves some publicity from what I hear. Really looking forward to picking it up this holiday, since I have everything else on that list!

It's a good list. I'd have put on Disgaea 3, which is also excellent.

Also: "The graphical presentation is sublime — the characters look hand-drawn in a comic style, with a charming look reminiscent of anime master Hideo Miyazaki."

Isn't it Hayao, not Hideo?

Dunno about what Miyazaki they're writing but I know one master of anime by the name of Hayao and his son Goro, who made pretty good anime too.

But overall, this is a great list.

(Also glad I own most of them already : )

Why is it that every Wipeout HD picture is always bad. This game rocks, graphic wise, but on the web, most pictures always look bad.

what you mean? VC got pretty high score across the board as far as I know. Althou due to personal preference I didnt quite like the game myself. But I dont mean to say the game isnt good just not to the style I like.

7.2 - I think a better word would be underappreciated
Kind of like many other cult hits.
Shadow of the Colossus is a great example.
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is another.

Got good ratings all around, but didn't reflect its praises in sales.
I just got VC yesterday, and I'm really enjoying it. I can't wait for some of the later battles =]

But I haven't enjoyed it at all. They changed too much for it to be Resistance. The two-weapon system detracts from gameplay in my opinion. The expanding crosshairs are a bother, there are way too many "Insta-kills" that keep taking you out of the game, regardless of general skill, and the whole (to me) lacks the general soul of the first one. I couldn't help but feel unable to immerse myself in the experience.

Also, my experience with the offline co-op was abysmal. My friend and myself are considered hardcore gamers, but were unable to get through even the first level of Chicago in co-op, regardless of the fact we had no idea what the controls and special abilities of our character classes AND there was no real explanation of the co-op dynamics.

My general experience with the game has been frustration and disappointment. I LOVED the first Resistance. I got every skill-point and played through Manchester and Cheddar Gorge about a billion and a half times, and enjoyed a fair amount of time with CTF, Nodes, and Sniper matches online.

I own all of these titles except 3. Valkyria Chronicles, WipEout HD, and SingStar Vol. 2. I plan on getting WipEout and would buy Sing Star if they would come out with a Hip Hop version and store space. Anyways, great list of excellent games.

12.1 - The problem with a hip hop sing star
is that there is not much vocal change in hip hop. Guys mostly just rap. Unless you want to sing along with usher or beyonce...in that case I'd rather do rock. It is less embarrassing should someone walk into the room.

14 - The important thing to remember
is user base vs online users. Sony has a smaller user base than the xbox but has the same size online base. This shows the free model seems to be working in Sony's favor.

I would say that ALL platforms have had a great year (yes, even the Wii), but I'd have to hand PS3 the year of 2008 due not only to the large amount of great exclusive and multiplat titles, but also the VARIETY and CREATIVITY of those titles. This is especially true for many of the PSN Store games that came out this year.
