Japanese dialogue in PS3 Blu-ray Last Remnant teased

Square Enix has teased fans over the possibility of including the original Japanese dialogue in the PS3 version of inbound JRPG The Last Remnant.

The Xbox 360 version of the game, described by Square Enix president as "the cornerstone" of its worldwide strategy, is due out on Thursday, with PS3 and PC versions planned but without a release date.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com during an interview with the development team in Tokyo, dialogue editor Yuji Isogawa said "we'll see" in response to a question about the possibility of including the original Japanese voice over work in the PS3 version.

I agree: there is NO REASON not to. If they don't put it in, especially knowing that people want it, then they are doing it either to be pricks on purpose or because they are lazy. I hope they are neither and they utilize the disc space and put both languages on.

Yep another reason that BD was a very relevant media format to have in the PS3. I see many games coming from Japan recently that have had both an English and Japanese voicetrack. I was a bit sketchy on Valkyria Chronicles, but low and behold not only did SEGA include a Japanese language track the game has a damned DTS soundtrack as well! As a home theatre enthusiast I was overjoyed to have a full on DTS soundtrack so I can pipe the wonderful 1.5mbps audio through my A/V receiver. For those that are wondering, Dolby Digital has an encoded bitrate of 640kbps, that's twice the quality of CD audio. DTS is over twice that quality. Thanks for Blu-ray Sony! It might have raised the price of my PS3 some but I'm happy to have paid for it. It makes for a true HD experience. I wonder if developers would ever start using DTS-HD 7.1 Master Audio? *salivates and wrings hands in anticipation*

Im not sure what Resistance 2 uses, but its definitely 7.1 and atleast 5 mb/s. Anyone that rates Resistance 2 sound less than 9.5/10 is crazy.

@kevnb

Resistance 2 also uses a DTS track, something I noticed when the little DTS icon popped on when I loaded up the beta. Damn that game has some slick sound. I have no way of measuring the bitrate, but I'd assume it's around the same. If you could provide a reliable reference, I'd be grateful.

I think a big reason why it would be somewhat difficult to do both languages, is the lip syncing. I mean they would need to have two seperate sets of animations.

I really do hope we'll get Japanese voices though, that would've been awesome (love my Yakuza 2 copy).

That's a great alternative way to do it. Provided you don't own one of the 200 dollar Arcade units. Then you're pretty much boned.

I'm more interested to know whether they will actually polish the game for the PS3 and fix the consistent framerate drops present in the 360 version (seriously Square, you guys shouldn't even be releasing the 360 version in this state; just goes to show how desperate they are to make a profit this quarter). Those framerate drops distract from the presentation and one of the reasons why I'll wait until the PS3/PC release to decide whether or not I'll buy this game. If the framerate drops are fixed in the PS3 release, then I may get the game. Though, the extra voice option is nice as some of the English VA is cringe worthy. Also seriously, if you are a 360 owner, you shouldn't accept the framerated drops and just go for Tales of Vesperia this winter if you need an RPG fix.

While it irritates me a little that the PS3 version isn't coming out with the 360 version I realize it's probably for the best. With so many great games out right now it would get lost in the mix. Hopefully it will be out by the spring which would be a great time. As for the audio, make it happen SE.

I couldn't agree more. If it released for the PS3 in April or May that would be fantastic. As it stands right now, I have to:

Finish Fallout 3
Put in some quality time with Valkyria Chronicles
Finish Far Cry 2
Start Tales of Symphonia 2
Get some multiplayer going with Gears 2 and Resistance 2
Stop obsessing the little details in my LBP levels and finish the single player

... if it DIDNT have the original Japanese voices.

Like I'm interested in buying a game with a lame english dub(!) We're not in the 80's anymore.

This game is run on the Unreal engine so anyone thinking that the ps3 will get a better and more polished version will sadly be mistaken.

buh buh Crystal Tools...god that pisses me off. After all this time, the "White Engine" isn't anything more than PR hype. I'm hoping FFVersus13 looks really good, but with the way Square Enix has been I'm not even sure if that'll look any better.

Heck, PS3 owners could only wish for an "identical" version to say the least.

I don't think any PS3 owners should get it in their head that it will be the "Polished" or "superior" version. Or else they'll just get more disappointed.

I honestly don't see why not. I mean, seriously. UE3 is not exactly gimped on the PS3. Early titles may have been, but more recent titles have been much better; Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe comes to mind. So no, it is not wrong for a PS3 owner to hope for a more polished version. It is possible, depending on how much more time Square-Enix wants to spend on the PS3 version and whether they want to see the franchise become successful on the PS3. Square should have delayed the 360 version of the game IMO: watching gameplay videos have turned me off on the game completely, the screens look fine, but in motion, the constant framerate drops during the battle screen distract from the game and become annoying.

Oh, and to be more polished, a game doesn't need better textures; it just needs to fix the goddamned framerate drops. Ugh.

Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey had Japanese Audio options. The 360 Naruto game gave you the option to download the Japanese track.

It's somewhat inexcusable to not include the original voice work for games:

Tales Of Vesperia
99 Nights
Lost Planet
Infinite Undiscovery

Bluray is a great medium there is nothing wrong with it. Its just a hard sell to the public who don't have HDTVs. For those who do its great and with the space on the Bluray we should have like multiple language voice overs, behind the scenes footage and all that great goodness for every game released.
