My friends always want to get through a game on easy "Just to play it for the storyline", they say. "If I'm busy dying I won't be able to play the full value of the game." Maybe their right, but I always play on atleast medium. If you plow through a game with no resistance then it's not a fun experience in my opinion.

I think all games should have a easy, medium and hard difficulty level with a bonus superhuman/god mode/extreme difficulty that can be unlocked after beating the game on any difficulty level.

I also think that games with only one difficulty level (fable 2, king kong the video game for example) should really have a choice for harder difficulty. I know my friend was kind of angry because fable 2 was too easy for him and there was only one difficult level.

I guess it comes down to everyone has their own right. If game developers just make a wide range of difficulty levels then everyone will be happy.

1.4 - Sometimes its ok to play on easy
I like games with a challenge and i despise easy games. If theres no challenge whats the point?

However im a big fan of RPG's. This means ill usually play the game once or twice on hard mode and then on im just trying different builds and dialogue so i dont see anything with playing it on easy when ive already beaten it

It may come as a surprise, but most gamers simply want to enjoy their entertainment, not be frustrated by it. There's a line between keeping it fun and making a game into work. (Evidence: Silent Hill; Homecoming)

..So quit being an insulting little elitist. I'll continue to enjoy games at my own pace and difficulty, thank you very much; and if I want to complain, I will - I paid for the game, after all.

3 - only reason old games are hard
is because the controls suck and enemies are so dumb they are hard

3.1 - actually...
old games were hard on purpose since they were often times only a few hours long. How else could a 4 hour game last longer than 4 hours...

same, i cant stand most new games on normal or easy, its just too easy. I like not being able to just walk through a challenge.

I like a challenge but not bad programming, it depends on the game. I'm playing R2 for the 3rd time on super human and it feels like the first time I played doom, fun and challenging, and the controls are tight. but I only play games on hard if the game is really enjoyable. Now for bad programming and the frustrating that goes with it, are real example would be Tomb Raider : angel of darkness. I really wanted to like the game and all but the death facot and the glitches I couldn't take.

I agree with you it was awesome. BUT!!!! The game is freakin' way to hard, I played it on normal and it felt like I was playing on Hard or Insane. The part where you have to cross the bridge, and there is over 60 enemies, the hell-fire turrets, the GOD-DARN AUGERS, and the huge monsters with the shields pissed me off. I think my final death tally for the campaign it says was around a couple hundred. The chameleons were also cheap, and the monsters that fire the rockets/flameballs take way to many hits and it is so hard to avoid them.

I never said R2 was a bad game, i'm addicted to it right now, and I was complimenting it. I was pretty much stating its such a good game that I'm enjoying playing it for a third time on super human. the trophies help, now am able to use all the weapons efficiently and able ti pay close attention to my surroundings enough to be able to play it on its most difficult setting,..... PS I need a clan for Co-op if any1 is recruiting Lvl 12 spec ops.... PSN ID Malicki, I have a headset

Thats what a fps is supposed to be like, try Halo 1 and compare it to Halo 3. Things sure have gotten alot easier.

you are sooooo wrong. I have a policy of always playing a game on normal first, becasue that should be what the game was designed for and if its too easy then I think the devs failed. Easy mode was made for a reason, gamers like you. I'm not dissing you, if you dont like hard, play it on easy. But personally I was so happy to find the game difficult, that was my biggest fear about R2, that it wouldn't be the challange. I love discovering new ways to kill people wit hdif. weapons. That part of the game you discribed, I jsut got through, it took me at least 12 tries, maybe more, and their were times at which I though "can I even beat this?" but when I learned to use the lark and Bullseye to the point it was downright easy, it was awesome. That might be my favorite part of the game.

History lesson: games were hard to steal more quarters. Don't be under the false impression that Contra was super-hard just because Konami was hardcore. Contra was hard because Konami wanted to make some $$$ in the arcades. Unfortunately, lots of older gamers misunderstand this and treat their difficult games as some sort of elite standard.

These days, game difficulty is the same farce. It artificially extends the life of the game and gives the "hardcore" more fuel to feed their elitist fire. There are some games (MGS4, for instance) where higher difficulties actually add dynamics that aren't found in the lower difficulty levels, but those games are few and far between.

Smart Guy of the day right here, all true. ^

Easy, Normal and Hard will always be in video games though, it lets first time players of video games to adjust the game to their skill level. Most of the time its just a bullet damage tweak, so those who have played shooters before and want a challenge can enjoy testing their skills with deaths being dealt by a pistol shot to their hip.

Some games on the otherhand are intentionally hard for the sake of nostalgia or becoming an instant classic on their own. God Hand for example, is one of my favorite games from the PS2 era, and it has to be one of the hardest published Capcom game out there.

I'm sorry, but most games these days are made for pansies. In the quest to casualize gaming (a la the Wii)they end up taking it too far. Useability becomes pandering, and frankly it sucks IMHO. Mega Man 9 and Contra 4, at least, are a good indication of how games can be challenging and not cheap.

I'll definitely agree there. Even the downloadable "Hero" and "Superhero" (Hard, Super Hard) modes for MM9 changed up the entire enemy composition of stages in order to create a new challenge, not make things harder to kill.

I'll also agree with the article on the LittleBigPlanet stuff: I'm a platforming vet, yet I still die on stages. Whether it be an odd jump or a missed grab, I don't blame the game for my own mistakes.

Every game I get, I beat it on the hardest difficulty. Has anyone here ever beaten European extreme mode on MGS3? What about RE4 on Proffessional? R&C should have had difficulties.

Mirror's Edge is goddamn hard! I'm currently at last chapter and I struggled in half of all the chapters. Really hard.

And R2's difficulty was hard yeah But I don't remember a part where I really rushed. I think the whole game was globally hard.

13 - I couldn't agree more...
especially the stuff about R2. i was so happy when R2 was HARDER than R:FOM (my memory might be faulty though) but i was terrified it would be subject to the Halo treatment, where each game was easier than the last. I love the tiumes in the game where I'm like "I don't know if I am capable of beating this" and then when i Do i'm like HOO-RAH! Take that chimera! It's always lame in a game like R2 where your like, are these guys even trying to stop me? But in R2 it feels like the Chimera are throwing EVERYTHING they have at you, adapting their stragety, trying to lure you into traps, so when I get through each section I feel like Nathan Hale single-handedly winning the war. For those who says they jsut want story, well difficulty is part of a games narative, therefore its essential! Yes in hte early days games were hard to make money, however newer games are easy for the same reason, greater appeal, but really there is a sweet spot in-between Contra and SMG(just getting enough to beat the game not extra stars which are damn hard lol)

First of all, would posters please stop saying "elitist"? All that word proves is that you watch Fox News. This article mostly seems to be a call for awareness that mainstream games are easier than they used to be, which is true. He's not saying that easy games suck, but that hard games DON'T suck just because they're hard. Take Wipeout HD. It's both fantastic and hard. I have already played the hell out of that game even though I'm pretty sure I'll never be good enough to beat all of the races (or even unlock some of them).

The argument that if you paid for a game then you should be able to finish it doesn't fly either. With the glut of video game review sites--most of which say exactly the same things--you should know a week before the game comes out whether it will be easy or hard. And don't say that you don't have time to read review scores, because you obviously have time to post a comment in a gaming forum.

The bottom line is that this article is one person's opinion, and there's really nothing offensive about it unless you REALLY don't like being called a pansy (in which case you are a pansy). The only problem in this article comes at the end, where the author writes "than your a pansy...LEARN SOMETHING." The "learn something" is hilariously offset by using "than your" instead of "then you're." Or is it elitist to expect a professional writer to have good grammar?

15 - Add COD: WOW on veteran difficulty to the hard games list
And I'm loving every minute of it so far. Heck, I died at least 15 times just at the ambush part on the first level, but after I finally beat it it was that much more gratifying. Also, it helped me win the Purple Heart Trophy, I was pumped b/c I got a trophy basically for sucking (actually for persevering in the face of danger, ha ha).

i dont know but i kind of dont see the point in games that are too hard. you just get mad over and over and end up getting more pissed rather than enjoying a game. perfect example ninja gaiden 2 hard mode. i just couldnt beat the 2nd boss. tried for over 2 hours then gave up.

This comment is not an attack, but hopefully an answer to your question. The point of NGII hard mode and other similarly difficult games is that for other people (not me), hard mode STILL isn't hard enough. They go back and play Ninja Master mode or whatever. I personally struggled to beat NG on Normal and felt like a badass when I did so. Hard mode simply wasn't made for me. Maybe not for either of us. And that's okay.
