Did Treyarch's CoD Really Beat Infinity Ward's CoD?

psxextreme.com writes: "After the spectacular Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare last year, few believed Treyarch could even approach that greatness with Call of Duty: World at War, let alone surpass it. But one of the first reviews out there claims that - against all odds - the latest CoD is actually the best.

The review in question that's getting plenty of attention across the Internet comes from PSW magazine, which says that Treyarch's effort has indeed surpassed Infinity Ward's. Here's a direct quote from the PSW blog:

"Modern Warfare was pretty much the best game on PS3 for the last year, it's online gameplay kept Deano, in particular, playing for months. So to hold the position that it's sequel, World At War is a better game, is surely to stir up some controversy. That's right, Treyarch has toppled Infinity Ward.""

1 - In Innovation ? Not really.
They did borrow the engine from them, so eh.

They did better than I expected, but still it doesn't make sense to do WWII, when no gamers want it to be that way.

It really depends on what era and what kind of weaponry you like. Otherwise they are pretty similar.

Yeah! Also they had their work cut out for!
They didnt developed the engine, they didnt imagined a deep multiplayer system, they didnt redefined the gameplay! They only added content due to the others stuff being already done.

Thats why they say its better, Treyarch had a lot a time to develop a zombie mode, the cards system and the co-op simply because the HARD work hawhyd been done! They had lots of time!

So, is it better?
It might be! Simply because it has more content! Infinity Ward looks foward! They said recently they expect to develop a Futuristic FPS. They try to evolve their game not making expansion like Treyarch.

Im not defending this or that developer! Im a gamer who feels that Cod WaW is just an expansion (with WW2 settings) and not a new game!

Treyarch's multiplayer has some pretty glaring balance issues between some of the weapons. They'll never match the polish that IW can bring, but they did make a good effort with this game. I'll pick it up eventually mostly for the campaign and co-op, but it's not enough to topple CoD4 for me.

1.7 - LOL H3LL NO!!!
I don't know what they were thinking.

Did they just want to annoy most gamers?

Everyone knows how many F_UCKING WWII Games there are.

Thats why I refuse to even barely glance at this new game.

WWII games make me sick now. Played too much, seen too much.

WWII started out great Like a new 18yr old celebrity but then years pass and that celebrity is a dirty whore. LOL

We need orignial war games. Something like zombie ninja migits vs. Zombie Space pirate Ghost.

I don't like any of the CoD's, but I know for a fact that CoD5 isn't better than CoD4. Mediocre as it, but CoD4 still has the edge.

no. treyarch is composed of entry level noobs that steal others' work.

infinity ward is superior in every way.

world at war is for noobs

Stealing? Blame Activision's money hogging if you don't like them using the same engine and mechanics. It's not really Treyarch's fault.

4.2 - umm no
IW is not superior in every way.
How soon we forget how bad COD2 and COD4 "was" online.
It took several weeks to a couple months for IW to get the kinks out of COD2 for the 360 and COD4 still (IMO) has lobby issues.

I definitely prefer 4 to 5 but that is mainly because of the weapons and levels but WAW (COD5) runs like butter online and there isn't one lobby issue. I must played in a hundred matches already and several levels of co op. It runs flawlessly.

It is better, much more detailed - feels like a proper war, even in the multiplayer side.

5.1 - Agree
Hardcore fells hardcore with these old school semis and bolt actions. COD4 with it's tiny rat maze maps was a spray n pray grenade spamfest. This game brings new life and fixes those glaring issues with online play.

There was a Half-Life mod for WW1 combat. I can't remember its name, though. It wasn't too bad, but it didn't really fit the war. Only the weapons were fitting.

The author of this piece should be hung and quartered lol. COD:WAW is a direct ripoff of COD4. All Treyarch did was reskin COD4 and add dogs of war and arty. Most of the unlocks are the same, with maybe the name changed. I think the game is getting ALOT of free points, review-wise, and when we look back on it after a month or two when the dust settles, people will realize the sham that WAW is.

I guess reviews are going by the phrase, "If it's not broken, don't fix it." I played the beta, and it really didn't have the smooth, polished feel I love from CoD4. I expected the reviews to be slightly lower than what it's been rated so far.

9 - WaW is terrible!
I played it the other night for a good 6 hours and lets just say the reviews it is getting is due to some other forces at work because I just cant see it. I like WWII games so save that little piece of bickering. CoD4 just blows this game away in terms of everything. WaW does not, I repeat does not look better nor is the multiplayer better! If you are a fan of CoD4 then you will be let down by this game plain and simple. I set the bar pretty high considering all the crap they talked. I believe they said this game would be better than gears and r2 which almost made me vomit. This is a greatest hits buy at best, if it even makes it that far. Save your money people and try it out at a friends house or watch a ton of hd videos online before throwing your money out. For those of you who like the game, that is cool too, I am not saying you shouldn't I am merely saying that this game does not live up to all the crap they were talking. While r2 is fun as all hell *almost have my platinum trophy, 3 away :D I would say the next game to give cod4 a run for its money is going to be K2, but we will have to wait and see.

I don't give any credit to Treyarch, especialy since half their development process was cut down using Infinity Ward's gme engine as well as basically replicating CoD4's mulitplayer exactly...

In terms of features, Treyarch wins. In terms of multiplayer, I actually preferred WaW, especially for the noticeably lesser amounts of nade spam.

It can work both ways.

You can like shooting at ragdolls with no blood that just does the harlem shake and die?

Or you can like shooting a .35 caliber sniper rifle that takes off limbs with blood splattering over the walls and nearby boxes. Or fully decapitate them with the same bullet with their body snapping back hitting the ground in less than .5 seconds.

While I agree COD4 is one excellent game, perhaps one of the best FPS's created this generation. WaW has it's own merits.

World at War.

- Better Level Design.

(COD4's levels were 50% cool 50% boring)

- Better textures and art in the levels

- Better Gore. Realistic

- Better spawn points

- The guns feel great

I have to say its better overall. Although I do miss the modern guns, the carnage and the feel of impending doom is more viceral in this version.

In my opinion, COD:WAW is freaking awesome. The single player campaign is a little short but extremely intense. The zombie mode is the best bonus content ever !! Stop comparing this game to COD4 and start comparing it to the last game developed by Treyarch, COD3. This game is way better than that game, it's definitely in it's own class along with COD4. People need to stop comparing these amazing games. I think they actually compliment each other because each remind me why I love the other soooo much !
