EA: PS3 Red Alert 3 back on

The previously "on hold" PS3 version of RTS Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is back on, with EA promising to do "some really cool things" that make the most of the 1080p resolution and extra space Blu-Ray and PS3 provides.

Maybe they will allow keyboard and mouse support on the PS3?

I feel for you neo_ad. I was about to do the same, but I would've had to upgrade the old computer.

I will get the PS3 version day one instead.

It's not too bad of a game, but having the co-op commander always with you can get quite annoying after awhile. They are just so stupid at times that they have no value in combat, then at other times they seem to get half the mission done before you even really get going. More fun with a real human in control of them, or if they weren't there at all.

If they are using that extra blu-ray space they should at least try to make the videos full screen size. On the PC they put a border around the videos to make them smaller and hide the compression. Didn't need to do that with C&C 3 though. Could have put it on two DVDs for PC gamers, that would have been a nice gesture.

This should be a fun one for PS3 users. Hope some of those refinements come down the line as patches for us PC users though. I have to deal with crappy SecuRom it's the least you can do EA.

Have you guys notice how EA has change? I am starting to think that they really want our money. Heck I would say that they make more money on the PS3 than they do on any other console wait a minute... they do.

Sorry buddy but EA makes more money on the 360 than they make from the PS3,PSP and PS2 combined. http://www.n4g.com/NewsCom-...

Did you analyze the *overall* total in terms of Sony?

Not only that. It looks its also the first 3rd party trying to push PS3 further (1080p and BD content? Hell, yeah). Somebody found the key to PS3 development, it seams.

if they are using the extra space why dont other dev make there games 1080p and not 720p....i love my ps3 but whats the point of my 1080p tv if im in the xmb at 1080p and the put in a new game such as resistance 2 and i see my tv flicker to 720p...just kinda disappointing and resistance is a really good game really good..go get it

It costs much more money to make native 1080p content and have it at 30-60 fps. There are more picture elements (pixels) at 1080p than 720p and costs much more to make that play smoothly. Most 1080p games are upscaled 720p games.

Costs more? What you mean finacially? I dont quite understand what you mean.

Simply put, 1080p is a higher resolution and there for requires more system resources to run. It usually results in sacrifices being made else where, Anti Aliasing, Physics, players on screen, FPS etc etc

Doubling the resolution from 720 or 1080 is a massive leap and requires you to find a lot more power from somewhere. Sometimes it's just not viable, whether that be through not having enough power or maybe even time constants.

The Devs have to compromise between performance and visuals.

Not just that. But also way more memory is used. Which means, the frame buffer alone would double your memory footprint in vram. This puts a strain on texture memory, not to mention the higher bandwidth you need to render those images.

Some games do not have this high texture requirements and thus can possibly run with less texture memory (so, say, higher resolution, more geometry but lesser textures/low res textures would work fine). If you can manage that, then 1080p is just fine.

Procedural textures can also help lowering the memory footprint (or compression/texture streaming). When this tech is more and more available, and they can use creative ways to run stable 1080 (like Wipeout runs a per scan line dynamic resolution between full 1920 and 1500 or so), I would imagine, we'll see more hi res games.

Well said Fishy Fingers and Ju. It's not only a matter of how powerful the RSX and the Cell are, but how much available memory there is available for the framebuffer. 1080p takes twice as much memory as 720p, since there are double the pixels to draw. I'm sure if the PS3 had more available RAM (I would ballpark somewhere between 796 and 1024 megabytes), and if the RSX was a little more powerful (though many clever developers use part of the Cell to aid in graphics processing, so not necessarily needed), then I would bet money that there would be a lot more games out there running at 1080p right now. But, Sony probably figured it was loosing enough money already on the hardware due to Cell and Blu-Ray (those blue laser diodes are expensive), that 512 MB of RAM cost enough as is, more would have been too expensive. (on a note with those diodes, this is why some other companies are try to make another new high density format off of more conventional red laser diodes since they are cheaper to make).

Anyway, all that being said a game like RA3 should be able to run at 1080p. There really isn't a whole lot going on texture wise, the PS3 should be able to crunch out lots of geometry no problem. If you check the games for windows performance index (even though RA3 isn't labelled for it, apparently it still uses it), it uses a 4.1 out 5.9 as it's recommended setting, and a 5.9 doesn't mean the most powerful hardware out there, just the current maximum. That isn't very powerful hardware, and so PS3 should handle it fine. Maybe no AA at 1080p but come on, you gotta give something for it.

I think he refers to cost in terms of budget put into a respective games resolution?

Correct me if I am wrong.

Meh. Game was okay. Felt a bit stale on the PC. I bet EA's "really cool things" include charging $60 for a six month old game! But if they included the expansion pack for free and add in a documentary or something like that, then it can count as "really cool things". But one extra unit and a high price tag don't cut it.

8 - With titles like Wipeout HD...
Seems like devs are getting their heads around the PS3 now. With Wipeout HD, KZ2, R2, R&C, Uncharted - it seems asif the devs are beginning to get the PS3 architecture. Sure Sony is spreading the techniques used in these games to other developers in the tools like EDGE. We will most probably start seeing some increase in graphic quality in the PS3 now - as the "new" dev cycle is taking advantage of the knowledge gained. The last current crop of titles are still very much build on the old toolsets - only top titles make use of the new techniques.

Good to see EA is finally making strides with making full use of the PS3's capabilities and learning more about how to develop more effectively on the console., I hope they have gotten over their "issue" with saying that the PS3 is hard to develop for.
