Report: Mirror's Edge Demo (PS3 VS Xbox 360)

Based on Unreal Engine 3, with PS3 allegedly lead platform Mirror's Edge is an ambitious attempt at merging Parkour, stealth and more traditional FPS elements into one glorious whole. It's like a more stylised, first person perspective Assassin's Creed, but without all the free-running bits done for you automatically. This seems to have attracted criticism in that the control system is rather complex, but I rather like the freedom the game affords you.

A quick analysis of the demo reveals that in common with most UE3 titles, Xbox 360 still holds the technical edge, but PS3 manages to hold its own. Both PS3 and 360 versions have their fair share of 'jaggies', but the overall experience is a little smoother on the Microsoft console, thanks to the inclusion of selective 2x multisampling anti-aliasing (MSAA).

::shrugs shoulders:: Without really looking, I couldn't really tell the difference between the two versions and for that I truly applaud DICE and EA for their work.

Damn, EA sucking up all my money... First "Dead Space" and now this game.

chaosatom,

The only thing that is amazing to me is how every other dev crys that the UE3 sucks on PS3, when in reality it is their fault for leading the development on the 360.

Does it matter? According to 360 fans it matters. Although the PS3 version of GTAIV looks better, they said DLC mattered most. Wouldn't the same apply here?

PS3's GTA IV runs without AA and in subHD (1152x640).

http://forum.beyond3d.com/s...

X360's GTA IV runs with 2x AA and in HD (1280x720)

which ever looks best is obviously personal preference, but logically PS3's GTA IV is inferior. not by much, though having no AA is always noticeable.

I have seen that before and I understand something you don't. You don't understand that none of that matters. Resolution doesn't matter. AA doesn't matter. The final question is, what does it look like? The fact is the you can quote tech details all day long and it doesn't matter. I am not trying to be an ass here but most reviewers said the PS3 version looks better. Look:

http://news.teamxbox.com/xb...

That is just one example. And the PS3 ran at a slightly lower res. When you get one person saying it then it is an opinion. When you get a lot of people saying it that idea goes away.

BACK TO WHAT I WAS SAYING, 360 gamers acknowledged the difference but most said that DLC was more important. Well if it is so important then it shouldn't matter what a game looks like. Who is getting DLC in this case? Personally I think all of this depends on what the DLC is but that didn't matter to 360 fans before.

...if none of it mattered than why tout better hardware? What are all of those shader pipelines for?

Your statement fails.

"The final question is, what does it look like?"

What the phunk else do you think determines what it looks like? We're talking about what gets painted on screen. Pixels.

Without AA, or with AA, you tell me "what does it look like?"
HD or subHD, you tell me "what does it look like?"

GTA IV PS3 < GTA IV x360
Mirror's Edge PS3 < Mirror's Edge x360

(i'll tone down my comment a couple notches. i'm not trying to sound like a fanboy, i'm just an observer with exceptional knowledge of the industry. this is in no way meant to offend PS3 gamers. i am NOT calling anyone out...cept you morganfell)

Why does it matter? Becuase none of that hardware, being easier to work with or harder to work with but more powerful, none of that matters at the final moment. And the final moment is where the images leap off the scree, the sound comes out of the speakers, and the controls are handled by the gamer.

Facts...are stubborn things and despite all of the technobabble, at the end of the day the PS3 version walked away looking better. I would ask you how you can sit there and say the hardware is more important when we know the experience is more important.

Also, you can have that opinion of GTA IV if you want.

Also if you notice I never stated above which version of ME looked the best. My entire point was the fact 360 fans lived and died over DLC. Well do that now.

And you aren't calling anyone since you didn't bother with the main point I brought up. DLC.

1.11 - Wow, everyone's jumping on morganfell!
Look, technical tidbits aside, the 360 version suffered from much more noticeable pop-in. AA and resolution don't mean a lot in a game like GTA IV which used a lot of dithering, which gave it a characteristic gritty look, and helped mask some of those shortcomings on the PS3 version. The rest comes down to color palette preference and rampant fanboyism.

By the way, I picked up the 360 version for DLC but my buddy left his PS3 version at my place, where we did our own unscientific comparisons.

Anyway, despite Deadspace being freaking great, the chances of EA going 2 for 2 here is something I wouldn't put money on.

2 - EA does a good job again
I didn't even realize this was made with the Unreal Engine - It runs so damn good on the PS3, and better than most "ports" of similar technical nature.

It just goes to show how good games can run if you make them first on the PS3 and then port them to the XBOX.

From my take on it, it's not the site or the site owners in question here but rather their motives. They are comparing two Demos to one another and not the finished product therefore you will here people here say they are fanboys. I would say that it is just a lousey comparison of two incomplete products and makes for fanboy flame bait.

I'll reserve any judgement as to which is better when the retail versions actually ship. I didn't notice any discernible screen tearing in the PS3 demo. It ran solidly.

It is just my personal opinion, mine and mine alone, but I think that the controls are a bit overly complex. The game controls well, but the controls didn't feel intuitive to me. I'm used to doing more with my right hand than my left hand, so jumping, sliding and rolling on the left side were a bit odd to me. I don't play many FPS games, so if that type of control scheme is typical in an FPS then I can understand why it would be there. I haven't bothered to see if I can customize the controls, but if I can then that small argument is completely moot.

I'd like to give the retail version a shot. The more I play the demo the more it's starting to grow on me.

Man, haven't EA turned their sh*t around?

I gave them lots of crap in the last year but I'm the first to admit, since their refocus, ie, leading with the PS3, because they found out its making them alot of money, things are looking better allround.

And its not just for PS3 owners. I wouldn't have though a game like Dead Space or Mirror Edge could come from them but there you have it, and it good for everyone. Well done EA.

Now if only you'd make a decent Cricket or Rugby game for us Aussies with the same production values Fifa and Madden get I'd be more than happy. You guys might even like it, Rugby is a much tougher game than Gridiron.

An improved cricket game will be MUCH appreciated. Usually codemasters cricket game would be better, but EA has been catching up.

I wish they would release their cricket games in the US as well (Especially with the growing popularity of the sport). I could have only played pirated UK versions before. :(

I know Madden was much improved this year, thats what I'm saying. EA has improved by leaps and bounds.

After the PS3 backlash last year over Madden, EA really had a good think. I still think it was just the finacial numbers that prompted it but who cares. If their motives were selfish but meant good news for everyone then so be it. Good times, Noodle salad.

PS
No one bit over the Rugby/Gridiron remark ey? Oh well. You guys dont know what you're missing. 80 Minutes of action. One break. No pads. All Guts. No defense team, no offense team, no special team. One team does it all. When theres a pause in the action, they go to commercial, not the other way round, (I still cant get over that.) And State of Origon is the toughest Rugby game on Earth because its the best 2 teams Australia can muster and even the losing side would beat any international side. State of Origon is the Creme de'la Creme.

ps3's architecture is very rigidly designed. devs must fit their workload into ps3's memory restrictions. on ps3 the frame buffer resides in the graphics memory. x360 has a far more forgiving memory configuration, with 512MB of system memory shared between Xenos and Xenon, and 10MB of EDRAM specifically dedicated to Xenos for the purpose of a tile rendered final frame buffer.

this is why most x360 games aim for a 1280x720 4xMSAA resolution, though pixels/samples are always the first thing devs compromise when trying to get their game work load to get acceptable performance.

karl...you know what?
You're not a *true* gamer if you actually spend your entire day spot checking both versions of a multiplatform game. Since you want to fit your little biased attitude in here, here's what I observed with the PS3 version.

1. It has warmer colors and doesn't look washed out like the 360 version.
2. The textures are smoother, and I didn't see that many jaggies.

You're one of those 360 owners who have to use a game to claim superiority for your system.

That's really, really low.

Keep using the magnifying glass karl instead of playing the game. I'll be enjoying that game, along with R2, LBP, Valkyria Chronicles, Naruto, and many other games that caught my interest.

Why *must* the 360 version look better than the PS3 version karl?

WHY?

You're smarter than that.

I always have and always will call out any and all cases of the ps3 underperforming against its 360 rival

Most especially when people keep saying that ps3 ports of 360 games look sh1t (they do) and then suggest that said games should have been developed on the ps3 first so they look equal (they don't)

In this case, the ps3 was the lead and the 360 STILL looks better!

I will continue to point that out, Juuken, because otherwise Sony will continue to tell you lies again!

Despite my provision of this free service to the n4g community i KNOW you will continue to deny everything I say and pathetically defend the ps3 - no matter what the facts.

You can't help yourself, can you... you're addicted!

Failed to mention lighting differences and texture differences. Both of which are in the PS3s favor.

I would have taken AA over them though.

It is a non-EPIC made UE3 game, it doesn't look all that great graphically. Might as well used the Bad Company engine which was the same across platforms.

It is close though, EA is doing well. Not as good as Dead Space but still good.

The reason why they didn't choose the Frostbite engine was because it still wasn't ready. Digital Illusion was still developing the engine together with Battlefield Bad Company.

To the next Mirror's Edge that will release in a year or two, we might see it running on the Frostbite engine. Possible that it will be even better than the Unreal Engine 3.

I know that specs are designed a while before the actual systems are launched, but you would think that RAM wouldn't be THAT expensive to implement. If each console had a gig of ram, all problems would be solved, IMO...
