IGN: Eternal Sonata PS3 Review

Although sometimes awkwardly paced and linear, Eternal Sonata is an RPG that everyone should consider checking out, especially for the unique premise and touching music. The battle system is rewarding and evolves throughout the game and seeing the characters interact is a lot of fun. Especially with the added features, there's really no reason for RPG-hungry gamers to pass up the PS3 version. But if you only take away one thing from this article, remember this: Chopin is the man.

I liked this game on the 360.Every once in a while you need a calm RPG to play

"...Eternal Sonata runs beautifully on the PS3 and load times are very impressive. This is clearly the definitive version..." -IGN

1.6 - lol yeah
Its nice to see PS3 ports get better scores if they have more content. I pretty much fell in love with the game after playing the demo and seeing the trailer. If you haven't, check it out! Great music can really enhance the story which is why I think this game has interested me so much. The combat system isn't too shabby either.

The funny thing?

They scored the 360 version 8.3.

Not bad for a year old port.

2.3 - and yet, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift,
a PS3 exclusive that also improves upon everything that was wrong with original actually scores LOWER than the original did.

i just don't understand reviewer's criteria for reviewing ports and sequels, or ANY game for that matter.

i can't wait to get my hands on Eternal Sonata PS3 (Bioshock PS3 also), but there are too many great NEW games coming out. i'm currently knee deep in Little Big Planet, Fable 2, and Fallout 3. all 3 are highly enjoyable (especially LBP and Fallout 3, though Fable 2 is no slouch either), and i'm having a blast. add in the fact that i got into the Resistance 2 beta yesterday, and the full game comes out in, what, two, three weeks? and i just don't have the time to play year old ports, regardless of the quality. i'll see about getting it asap, however, since i really enjoyed what i played of it back on the 360 (i never beat it, just only played the demo).

Not sure if you have noticed....but this happens to sports titles all the time. Besides...you can not compare Motorstorm rift sequel to Eternal Sonata in this case..basically it got a grade, was worked on...and should receive a higher grade the second time around.

2.5 - actually, it makes perfect sense in Motorstorm's case
Motorstorm: PR added:

more tracks with more variety. the first was limited to the "brown" of it's Arizona setting. PR is set on an island, with themed tracks like jungle, air, water, and fire.

on the same note, the tracks are better designed, and larger, with more paths to take to get to the finish line.

more cars. that's self explanatory.

improved visuals. it really does look much better than the original

better load times. the first had ATROCIOUSLY long load times. this new one has way better.

split screen. the first didn't have split-screen at all, so this is a major improvement.

the game is STILL fun, especially with the new improvements.

i think this warrants a higher score than the original. all of the improvements added to the sequel simply makes it a better game than the original.

what reviewers are saying, is that MS: PR is NOT a better game than the original, even though it has less going for it than the original.

oh yeah, and i forgot, all that DLC that was purchased for the original (ie, new cars), can carry over to the sequel, so your money wasn't wasted.

how is that NOT worth a better score?

i agree that sports games do it all the time, but then again, sports games take place in the same locations, with the same basic gameplay over and over again.

Motorstorm is different in this regard because of the constantly changing location (hell, they can set one in OUTER SPACE if they wanted...), and constant tweaks to it's gameplay.

the main reason why i read they lowered the score of Motorstorm 2 is because it's "not as fresh as the original was?" WHAT sequel IS? and not only that, but Eternal Sonata, which has the EXACT SAME story as the Xbox 360 version IS FRESH?

let me ask you which game do you think is better:

Motorstorm - a few different tracks with the same brown, desert setting. no split screen. long load times. smaller tracks. great graphics. smooth controls. lots of DLC. fun game.

Motorstorm 2 - lots more tracks, with different settings (fire, water, air, etc). split screen included. shorter load times. larger tracks with more paths. amazing graphics. smooth controls. DLC from the first is usable, and will likely get it's OWN DLC as well. fun game.

the sequel just seems, to me at least, to be a better value than the first.

if Eternal Sonata can give you the SAME EXACT game, with a few new playable characters and costumes, and score better than the original release, then i think Motorstorm 2, which gives you MORE of everything, in a new, much more visually interesting setting (the island instead of the desert), with improved gameplay tweaks like load times and split screen, should score higher than the first game as well.

but that's just me.

They said "Definitive Version" which is a nice complement. From the demo it seemed like a nice (if rather standard) JRPG. Personally I have yet to see a JRPG that feels more than an upscaled PS2 one. I am hoping WKC or FFXIII will really go "next gen" but I still have my doubts.

Japan seems a bit behind this gen with their RPGs.
