Resistance 2 Slapped a 18 By the BBFC

GOONL!NE: We just took a look a look around the BBFC website to see if there was any game classifications recently given..

Turns out, there was.

A listing from October 13th is on the BBFC website stating that Resistance 2 for the PLAYSTATION 3 will be given a 18 rating by the BBFC which is a rating higher then the 15 rating also given by the BBFC for Resistance: Fall of Man for the PLAYSTATION 3.

Surprises me, basing my impressions on the beta it's not exceedingly violent or gory.

Perhaps some of that has been removed or yet to be implemented into the build the beta is running. I'm sure they've reduced the texture res and poly counts, in the beta. I gather that from the file size, the beta only at 2.2gb while the final product is rumoured to be 41gb+ that, to me, means stuff has been reduced or cut away (from the beta).

Yeah, but you've not seen any of the cutscenes. There might be some brutal sequences or constant foul language.

When rating games, people like the BBFC have to see _everything_. Not just a demo or a beta.

Killing someone with an explosion causes them to explodes into pieces, with body parts all over the floor. You can even cut people heads off, and other body parts. So you shouldn't have expecting this game to get lower than a Mature (18+) rating.

Insomniac confirmed that the gore system has been completely revamped, but basically it only applies to the single player campaign...enemies and NPCs are now ripped apart by explosions, and blood and body parts with stick and slide down walls...and don't forget about that splicer...

finally got my beta code today...downloading now...can't wait to try out the co-op...

well it is graphically for violent. Bodies explode into bloody chunks now. makes sense. Doesnt really matter though. Few parents actually pay attention to the ratings codes.

Fortunately 18 or mature ratings on video games don't hurt sales that much, compared to movies.

Most of the kids who want the game will get it regardless. Of course it will have some effect, but not significant.

I can see why Resistance 2's rating might be rated higher than the first one by the BBFC because Resistance 2 is a lot more gory. I remember in one gameplay video there was a in-game cutscene that showed a solider getting ripped in half by one of the new type of Chimera that can turn invisible or camouflage themselves , and you could see his guts and other internal body parts hanging out.

BBFC is the ones who rate all our movies, games and DVDs in the UK hence the British Board of Film Classification.

They rate games which they feel desevres more of a rating from them then PEGI if needed like Fable II or Far Cry 2 and this is the problem, Europe already have a decent PEGI ratings system yet the BBFC slaps on a rating to whatever game they feel that may cause more people to cary guns, knives and attacks hence why Comment 14 makes a good and valid point.

While I dont think the BBFC should dissolve like some people have been saying, I do think they should stop rating games in the UK and leave that just for PEGI to decide.

I've actually been to the BBFC a few times, they have this mini cinema in the basement bit, the screen is pretty big for the size of the cinema and all the seats are leather. Watched Willy Wonker and the Chocolate Factory there once also rated old films to see how they rate films.
