Sony, Microsoft begin battle of virtual worlds

Sony and Microsoft are poised to do battle in virtual worlds.

The console kids both announced Second Life-style virtual environments at the Tokyo Game Show today. Both games show striking similarities to Linden Lab's creation

Players are represented by avatars which live a virtual life - engaging in relationships, going about day-to-day business. These can be personalised to look as similar (or different) to how the user looks in real life.

Sony's "Home" virtual world for the Playstation 3 will be released on November 19th, after its delay twice already. It will go up against Microsoft's Xbox 360 "New Xbox Experience".

Someone is trying to give HOME another delay status. This date is not official before Sony says so. I would not expect Home any day soon.

There are more than enough games for holiday season, so actually I would not be surprised if they would push it to 2009 release.

I'm in the Home Closed Beta and it's like nothing else!

I've met about 15 people that I added to my friend list and I play with constantly! It's cool cus you get to know PEOPLE not what the best gun in Call of Duty 4 is.

Home needs to be released so everyone can enjoy it!

It's in version 0.98 so 1.0 should be releasing soon. A couple months ago Didn't a Sony rep say "I'm 100% sure Home will be released by the end of the year."

It makes for a more compelling story line for game journalists to just make up release dates. Plus, if you throw out a concrete date it tends to catch on rather quickly around the internet and gets ingrained in the minds of the people who read these sites as fact. Even if the company comes out and denies it, the fact that the concrete date was even mentioned sticks with people. It's like telling someone to not think of the color blue.

In the case of HOME, the results then go like this:

If it releases before the date, then game mags, blogs or whatever can write up how "Sony surprised everyone" by releasing it early. If these sites then find something that they don't like, either valid or not, then they can push the storyline of how Sony failed to deliver on their promises. Or how Home shipped as an unfinished product and Sony should have taken more time to "get it perfect," whatever that is in an ambiguous definition.

If it releases after the date, then writers can continue to use the "OFTEN DELAYED" label when doing their comparison stories. Moreover, these journalists can continue with their "Is Home worth it?" "Will anybody care about Home?" "Will it move console?" stories instead of actually having to come up with new material.

Later on in the article they straight out state the release date:

No source mentioned at all for this claim, although they do quote a Sony rep for the 24 companies supported home.

However, I'm pretty sure that this sounds like a reasonable release date. It seems like home is hitting the final stages and Sony have been aiming for a fall release, with it definitely this year.

Kinda saw this comming as a direct assault from Sony on the NXE. Though in all honesty I wish both companies spent their money on GAMES! But MS I think is probably worse of considering their update seems as useless as their latest OS, Vista. Microsoft is creating a virtual world and not changing the way we navigate? In order for a "virtual battle" to commence you'll need at least two virtual worlds Emma Hughes, lol. I'm guessing she isn't a gamer, common mistake.

I still don't see why Microsoft even created avatars when you don't even use them outside of the mini games. So if you don't play them the whole purpose of creating one is non-existent. At least with Sony's PlayStation Home if you don't use it you don't have to create one.

Resistance could be as good as Gears 2, better than Gears 2, or worst than Gears 2. We just have to wait for them to be released.

but lets face it, Gears has gone gold already. Resistance will not match the sales of gears.
And Fables release date has been public knowledge a lot longer than LBP. And why should it be a competiton between them? They are completely different games.
And nothing will kill Wii. Its sold possibly more consoles than the ps3 or xbox will sell this gen!

Actually Sony is releasing LBP on the same day as Fable 2 and Resistance 2 on the same day as Gear of War 2. Now they are releasing Home on the same day as New Xbox Experience. It can't all be a coincidence. I'm sure Sony is releasing all their games on the same day as Xbox games on purpose because they know they will win.
LBP will probably win game of the year award and there is no doubt it is better than Fable II. Home will eat NXE up easily. You can do lots of different stuff in Home but in NXE all you can do is make an avatar which you can make on Yahoo as well. I also think Resistance 2 will be better than Gears of War II. Now I'm sure Sony is going to win this holiday season even with the higher prices. Even if xbox drop prices again I think Sony will win anyways.

The NXE doesn't deserve a 10th of the hype it's received. It has nothing new or exciting at all, NXE is MS attempt to stand up to Home, Sony have been clever and set the release date the same, so people will see clearly that Home is the better product, as it will completely trounce NXE.
