Eurogamer Interview: Sony's Shuhei Yoshida

Microsoft may have made the most headlines at this year's Tokyo Game Show, thanks to some key announcements during John Schappert's keynote speech. But Sony also has a significant presence at the event, with one of the largest, loudest and busiest stands on the show floor.

No bashing, some complimenting and most of all, confidence. That right there is what it is about and the man shows it in spades. He knows that the PS3 is the future of console gaming. He pushes that fact with Home and connecting players in ways other than just playing online. He also reinforces the PSP/PS3 interaction. Although the one good punch he laid in was the first party titles and lack thereof on the XBox when asked about 3rd party devs.

It was a good read as Yoshida - san said JRPGs are important to Japan, and Sony needs to step their game up cause the 360 is killing them with the JRPGs.

I see that whats coming on ps3 as far as rpg's are 10x better then anything out atm. IMO. Losing FF13 exclusivity , and Tekken is crazy non the less. Sony should have locked those franchises down. I don't know how you let Star Ocean jump ship ...either. Even though its likely just timed exclusive thats just wrong.

A bit off topic but look @ what Sega can do on PS3 http://www.gametrailers.com... holy shiat. 20 min long yakuza 3 vid, fast forward to around 15 min in to see gameplay. Waiting for english version is going to be painfull.

Japan and China are very much alike

but

they are not the same ppl

ADD ON: yes i meant in how they look! Even though Chinesse seem to have thicker facial features. In culture they are far away from each other for the last 100 years but if you go back 500-1000 years they are very much alike. They built the same looking buildings and they both have a form of buddism as the backbone of a way of being....Japan is a much much smaller country

In politics, culture, and pretty much most other things. The Chinese and Japanese are not at all alike.

I hope you meant by how they look, but even then I don't believe they look much alike. I can however see how some people would think so.

Edit: oops this should've been a reply not a new post

Eurogamer: So would you say it's a temporary blip, because of this RPG, and that will subside?

Shuhei Yoshida: When big new titles come out on any platform, it pushes the sales of that platform. I like to see people here in Japan showing interest in high-definition gaming and more sophisticated gaming experiences. In terms of realistic-looking graphics and smarter AI, they haven't really shown the appetite for what this generation of gaming can offer. I'd really like to see both PS3 and 360 succeed here.

you know for a fact you will never hear a MS guy say they would like to see the PS3 succeed!

10 - Eurogamer sounding like a douche bag
Eurogamer: But you canned a couple of titles recently - The Getaway PS3 and Eight Days. So you're doing fewer first-party titles?

Shuhei Yoshida: No, we're not doing fewer. We start more projects than we finish. It's part of the process, and I think we have that in common with many other publishers.

If we decide it doesn't work, or a lot more money and resources are required, and if it doesn't match with our business expectations - we stop the project. Eight Days was an example of that. That doesn't mean we are making fewer games.

"If it continues that way forever, it's not a good thing for us. But I'm saying what MIcrosoft is offering and what we are offering are closer, compared to what other platforms are offering. Because of that commonality, the new games coming out on 360 and PS3 help to get consumers more interested in this generation of gaming."

Fancy that, a Sony employee actually respecting Microsoft's work. It baffles me that MS cant show the same integrity towards Sony. But it seems Yoshida (Sony rep) has found a common enemy with MS, which is Nintendo.

But this last quote got me laughing

"But we have some other games we haven't announced yet. As you said, we are focusing on releasing this year's Christmas titles and titles for early next year. Some time in the next year, we're going to find the right place to announce those games we haven't been able to announce."

RIGHHHHTTTT... Yoshida, there's a small event called Tokyo Game Show that would have been perfect to announce new IPs especially considering it's almost holiday season. Sheesh.

And no bashing of the competition. Microsoft PR reps could learn a thing or two about this sort of behavior.

Also, it's funny how stupid fanboys get worked up over "lost exclusives", and then the Sony company president goes ahead and states utmost common sense:

--------

"Eurogamer: You mentioned earlier how important RPGs are in the Japanese market. So presumably it was very important for you to hold on to Final Fantasy exclusivity here?

Shuhei Yoshida: Yes, I presume so. I was not involved in that discussion with Square Enix; it was handled by SCE Japan.

Because of the amount third-party publishers have to invest to produce a game for this generation, it's really hard for them to justify releasing on only one platform. We did expect more third-parties to go multi-platform. I'm very grateful that some key franchises, like Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy, are staying exclusive to PS3.

Eurogamer: We're seeing fewer and fewer exclusive games, though. Yesterday it was announced that Tekken is coming to 360, for example. So what's Sony's current strategy when it comes to exclusivity?

Shuhei Yoshida: We anticipated this shift in third-party publishing economics. We have invested in our first-party studios so we can produce more exclusive titles."

---------

What a statement!

True, the only thing PS fans should be mad is if the game COMPLETELY doesn't come out for the PS3 and goes to another console. The ones that come to mind is Monster Hunter and Star Ocean.

There are still plenty of other PS3 exclusives, those "used to be exclusive" games are still coming out on PS3. So if you think about it, PS3 owners get to enjoy the "used to be exclusives" plus the exclusives anyway.

ms made childish statements in regards to the comp. Still saying
blu-ray is not needed. He must have forgot where he was, because
they have mini blu-ray camcorders. How do you go to someone elses
country trying to win a competition telling them sumtin they had longer then your country is basically trash and won't succeed.
Such arrogance.

I really like this guy, he comes off very genuine and nice. That was a good read but I like what he stated about 3rd party titles and the focus on 1st party this gen due to development cost.

I think they are making the right choice on focusing on 1st party. Those are the games that are going to differentiate the consoles and thats what has me worried about MS. After this year with every title damn near going multi how are doing go to compete in the long run against Sony 1st party and 2nd party titles.

I like the comment I also read at Eurogamer, concerning the Team Ico no-show, about how he's 'in conversation' with the team. Plenty of people seem to be under the impression that their latest project isn't ready to show, the fact of the matter is (as I said in another thread) it ACTUALLY IS IN SHOWABLE FORM. It's been shown internally at SCEE. It's also probably been shown behind closed doors at either E3 or Leipzig. It's good enough to show people, the concept is fleshed out and solid, I can think of no reason why they should be stalling on showing it, and plenty of reasons why they can and should have shown it to the public or non-embargoed journalists at any of the shows this year.

I hope 'in conversation' means Ueda's getting treated to some fairly harsh words, I don't want to insult the guy but I'm starting to get the impresion he's become a bit of a prima donna. Like, he's been given the priviledge of deciding when his game should be shown and he's taking liberties. This carry-on's been going on at least since 2007, definitely since Jan this year.

Overall a really good read and I think Yoshida conducted himself admirably in the face of a couple of tricky questions.

I was especially glad to read his comments on Home and that from launch it will be exactly what I'm expecting it to be which is not some instantly amazing application but a very promising one that will grow over time.

His opinions on 3rd party titles were also pretty good and I'm glad they anticipated how 3rd parties would go.

"I'd really like to see both PS3 and 360 succeed here."

Now that is a very good response. The man harbors no hatred towards Microsoft or the 360. He actually praises the 360 and Microsoft for the Miis.

Why can't Microsoft do the same? Why must they trash talk Sony like they're in elementary school picking on the younger kids? All PRs usually talk smack but Yoshida clearly is a gentleman.

Nice interview.

Good read. I like the fact that he actually seem to have some know-how of games in general and what people really want besides being a humble honcho.

SCEW really needs to collaborate more between the different divisions, I think, that's one of the reasons why there's been a lot going on with SCEA and SCEE compared too SCEJ. :)

Eurogamer: Turning to the PSP, the hardware is selling very well, but would you agree there's still a software issue? That third-parties just aren't producing the games?

Shuhei Yoshida: I would recommend you spend time walking around the show floor at this TGS. What I've found very encouraging is, Japanese publishers are putting serious effort and money into producing games for PSP. More and more, it's the choice platform for the large IPs.

lol great comeback.xD

Is it just me or is Eurogamer really going for Sony's throat?
