PS3 Fanboy review: PlayTV

The PS3 has firmly entrenched itself as not only a games console, but a fully fledged multimedia device.

It features blu-ray, media streaming, a web browser and image viewing and printing.

Now, with PlayTV, the PS3 adds television to its repertoire. Sony could easily have released a simple TV tuner with only the most essential features, but instead they've developed a product that's incredibly feature rich and integrates itself into the PS3 experience seamlessly.

1 - I'm really interested
in getting this. However, I think it's only available in the UK, correct?

I hope so. I just got a cox DVR (free channels only, but includes digital and HD). I need a second one, but PlayTV has so many more features (like the export function). I think the biggest problem will be the programming guide, though. Digital carries at least the channel information, but what about the guide ? Could be done thru internet instead (but then you'd get kind of a TiVo). TiVo could sell a receiver for the PS3. They charge for the guide, though. I would take it without a guide, if available.

4 - Coming to US?
I dont think this will ever come to the US. A shame really as I am sooo ready to dump my current cable provider and their SH!TE DVR. The menu system on this is light years ahead of any other product on the market.

Im pretty sure this thing only does over the air broadcasts, so unless you like regular tv (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CW, etc) dont get rid of your cable provider just yet

I'd still get a cable. But I wouldn't want to get their DVR (costs $20/month). As long as they add ATSC it should work fine (without the guide, though). I have about 15 free (digital) HD channels now, and these are free (well, free within the extended cable) and you can decode them with say a PC-tuner or simply HD-TV.

I can't use it because it needs an external aerial to work and I only have cable TV. No external aerial. Pah :(

I'm in new York & the FCC is holding us back. I think I'm moving to Europe soon.
