Square-Enix Set To Underwhelm PS3 Owners At TGS 2008

Sony spend most of their cash for the past 15 years building studios in USA and Europe, because Sony knows that local studios sell games locally (very true still, European games does better in Europe, USA games does better in USA generally).

They left Japan wide open because it was home turf, and they assume they have enough powerhouse to back themselves up. Having Sony's own Japan Studio (still one of the bigger ones) was probably enough they thought...

So after 15 yrs, Sony has yet to acquire RPG maker but has establish some fine relationships with Nippon Ichi and Level 5. Sony this is the time to flex the those cash if Sony wants to lock in RPG market, Sony should move in closer tie or acquire Level 5 and Nippon Ichi before someone else does.

But financially, I think World Wide Studio is pretty much broke until they can make a turn around on investment from Little Big Planet and Motorstorm 2 after acquiring Evolution and BigBig Studio last year.

Edit: Japan Studio itself made assortment of things, and there is a RPG team just in case you wonder. That team made Folklore which would have been successful if they had enough money to advertise a bit more heavily

I think Sony needs to move on from Square, not cut them off, but leave them to their own devices. Sony should, like Raoh said, work with other developers to try to replace what square would bring to the console. Square is good, but Level-5 is better.

This sentiment didn't suddenly start with the announcement of 13 for the 360. In many peoples' eyes, Square has been going steadily downhill since the release of X-2 (with the exception of Kingdom Hearts). They don't deserve the respect everyone used to have for them, because they haven't proven to us that they still have "it".

@1.3 & 1.4: Sony is doing it pretty much right now. There was no fuss about it from Sony's side. Just simple: "We saw that coming".
It was brilliant move to build own first party studios instad of throwing cash on 3rd party devs to be immune to such "stealing" strategies we saw recently. As if they were aware what'll happen with 3rd party exclusives.
As a Sony's customer it's totally cool with me. I love exclusives we have and I'm pretty sure I'll love upcoming games.
I don't give a damn about this console war, don't care who'll win, more important is my fun factor while playing on my PS3 and my support to Sony and Developers for the good time I had and will have.

i dont know whats up with you guys, just buy a 360 and get over with it. times have changed, sony no longer has the biggest and best console. its pretty clear sony has no intention of catering to ps2-ps3 owners as they just will not go out and do deals with third parties to get exclusives. squenix and namco as well as others are all making exlcusive or timed exclusive games for 360. 3 years into the console war i think its pretty clear which console has won this generation in terms of software. its not squenix that slapped you in the face, its sony. even from their own studios, where the hell are the AAA titles? all we've gotten are unfinished products either lacking MP or lacking SP modes.

Should they acquire Level-5? Maybe. Probably. It's a tough call. But Nippon Ichi? Definitely not. It wouldn't be worth it. Here's how important Nippon Ichi games are to the success of the Playstation brand: in the upcoming titles section in the August edition of Qore (which lists every single game coming out for the system in the given month, including multiplatform games), Disgaea 3 was completely absent. Where was it? Who knows, but apparantly Sony forgot it existed. Nippon Ichi games rarely sell well, absolutely never break a million, and are generally considered cult games. Quite frankly, the studio has never shown that it can produce a blockbuster or a system-seller. I love NIS, they're one of my favorite developers, and Disgaea 3 is currently one of my favorite games to play, but I just don't think that spending money to acquire that company would do much to help Sony. They need a Level-5 much more, someone with experience doing large-scale big-budget block-buster titles and snazzy 3D graphics that'll excited the more common gamer.

What Square did is in fact business but it depends on whether it was the wise choice or not. While they should improve relations in the west, they also shouldn't forget their Japanese counterpart.

If you look at the best games, they`re usually exclusive ones (in 360`s case they can be on PC at the same time too, because of the similarities between them).

Multiplatform games can be great across all platforms like COD4, but that`s more an exception of the rule. Look at EA to see what i mean.

I didn't say that people would be disheartened about owning two consoles. I said that most people CANNOT AFFORD TWO CONSOLES SO THEREFORE THEY HAVE ONE CONSOLE and I can understand why they were upset the game went multiplatform.

You may not care about which system you play the game on but most people *do*.

Square has said quite a few times that FFXIII was a PS3 exclusive along with FFXIII Versus. It's not about not letting people play the game. That's not what I'm getting at. What I'm getting at is that Square is going about this the WRONG WAY. I am not saying they shouldn't cater to the western market. What I'm saying is that if they were truly trying to make money, then they should have treated BOTH CONSOLES EQUALLY. Stop with the timed exclusive crap and allow the games to come out on BOTH systems at the same time.

E-mail Sony and tell them to stop demanding that 3rd parties view them as a god, and to start buying exclusivity for 3rd party games like a normal company. When a 3rd party game reaches critical acclaim it's going to the highest bidder, not the company that "thinks" they should get it just because they exist. Sony and their fanboys have a false sense of entitlement. The PS2 days are over, their main console hasn't and will not dominate the market. Therefore the days of getting free 3rd party exclusives are over.

I think you gave me the wrong links here, because both are the same and show the best games for consoles going back to the PS1. The list also shows more exclusive games, despite multiplatform games having two version of the same game.

Either way, i don`t use gamerankings to show what kinds of games is the best on platforms, because some have more reviews than others, which is clearly unfair. If you asked PS3 owners what their top 10 games would be, do you think a lot would say GTA4 or Orange Box ?

Compared to the vast number of multiplatform games being out, i think exclusive games is clearly the best. The most anticipated games is normally also exclusive ones. For PS3 this year : MGS4, LBP, R2, M2. For 360 : Gears 2, Fable 2, VP2. Multiplatform : Fallout 3, Mirror`s Edge, POP, Far Cry 2.

As for FF13 case specifically, i`m sure some dosn`t like that SE is doing a lot of 360 games and got FF13 also. I won`t matter a thing for me as long as the game`s good (or that we might see some actual gameplay soon hehe). But, it will take longer for the game to come out now because multiplatform development enquires more developers and they have to make it for both systems (which is why exclusive games also look better).

My first console was the NES, 21 years ago. The PS2 was an exception? Good lord you're not very bright are you? The PS2 had no strangle hold. Sony didn't force developers to make games for it? Open your eyes and think before you spew bullsh*t about stuff you know nothing about.

Licensing was the only thing paid for until Microsoft came into the mix. You want proof of this? All you have to do is look at FFVII. But then again, I'm sure you'll say that Squaresoft was bought off by Sony for FFVII, even though the PS1 was a new console that no one trusted to be successful, and in terms of overall specs offered less than the N64.

Yeah, games were bought since the beginning of the industry. Sega and Nintendo did it all the time /sarcasm. I really hate people who act like they know what they're talking about, yet lack basic common sense.
