Bionic Commando devs called 'arseholes' by rivals

Bionic Commando Rearmed has set the "gold standard" for downloadable games, the game's producer has claimed.

Capcom's Ben Judd, producer on the Bionic Commando series, told VideoGamer.com that the Xbox LIVE, PSN and PC remix of the classic NES game has led to developers calling Capcom "arseholes" because of the high quality and cheap price of the game.

He said: "We've actually got phone calls from other developers saying 'you arseholes, now because you've made a game at such high quality and priced it at $10, now that's the gold standard. If we try and put out a game for $15 people are going to say, well what about Bionic Commando Rearmed? What if we put out a game that's just meta emulated, they're going say we're being greedy'. Because we've raised the bar to that level now we've got other developers on their toes, where they should be. There's a lot of potential there, but right now people are being too damn lazy. They're not paying the respect to the old classic games that they should."

totally agree...decent retro game, but WipeOut HD sets the bar for a $10-15 game...at least according to reviews so far...and SSHD/Geometry Wars are already the best games for $10 either way...plus Braid crushes bionic commando from what I have seen...

nice try though...Sorry Capcom, you don't set standards anymore...everything you have made this generation so far has recieved above average hype with an average delivery...

I don't agree here. Sorry.

I think the best PSN game is PAIN. It's the one I play the most. Braid could be the best, but I haven't played them all.

Warhawk doesn't count, but it should. IT ROCKS!

Hey man that's cool, everyone has their different tastes and such, for you it's PAIN, for me it's BCR, for someone else it's Castle Crashers and for others it's Wipeout HD, so that's cool.

that standard is about to get hammered by Wipeout HD :)

anyway, i call bull- this sounds like extra marketing to me, a little too far fetched- other developers calling a developer arseholes for making a great game?

i smell bull all over this

BC:R is still mighty awesome though

10 - BC:R
Is a prime example of how to makeover a title from the past. So is Super Stardust HD and Pac-Man CE for that matter. Wipeout HD looks to set a fantastic standard...what happened to 1942. Such a letdown.

10.3 - 1942...
...is average at best. Basically because its too damn short. On easy mode you'll get through it in less than 30 minutes. Why does it not loop back to the first level?!? Speaking of which, the first level is rather naff and extremely short!

I loved the original 1942 but this game did not capture the feel of that game at all. In New Zealand it cost $18, in reality its only worth $4.95. Oh yes, I am getting annoyed with games where you can't have your own local high-score chart. That is, if I play it 20 times I want to be able to see my 20 high-scores and then only have my highest score be used for global rankings. Unfortunately if you don't score over a certain amount your high-score isn't even retained!

12 - List of best DL'ble games I've witnessed
No real order, just top of my head.

Geometry wars 1+2 - I'm sorry, but no one on this planet can say the series GW on XBLA is rubbish or overrated, its perfect. '2 is amazing and worth every penny. Both should be bought and played as they have totally different rules and strategies. The whole digital download games is one of the best things Microsoft have bought into this generation and for console manufactures to continue in the future. But XBLA certainly isn't all gems, by far.

REZHD - Even if you own Rez for another platform, you simply have to get this will all the coupled modes and display features. E4 and Lumines is pretty good too, but not everyone's cup of tea.

Super Stardust HD - People say its 'the answer to Geometry Wars' No, it isn't. Its a totally different set of rules with clever game mechanics and it more related to Asteroids which the original Stardust on Amiga was like anyway. Changing weapons as a strategy to shoot different asteriod types is a great gameplay mechanic.

Pain - Its not a game, its a toy. Its great fun, cheap and great to show at parties as nobody wants to let go of the controller, hillarious once drunk.
A players avatar hitting the exploding Manhole club sign set off in Pain Bowling mode is worth the purchase alone.

Calling All Cars! - Why this one? Because it can cause you too rip the throat out of someone next to you. People who have played this one will understand. The only game I know to be as hectic and fast paced as this before would be Powerstone 2 but it is no way a contender.

Tekken: Dark Resurrection - Its Tekken, its online, its cheap and looks amazing.

Echochrome - Been looking for that perfect puzzle game that doesn't involve speed or matching? Well here it is. Level Editor included. Great design and soundtrack.

Blast Factor - I like the Six-Axis tilting the arenas and the bullet time like slo-mo is awesome. Get the bundle with AR pack. At first it seems lame, then you get into the act.

Everyday Shooter - You like the rhythm based shooting of Rez? You'll love this.

flOw - The word 'Relax' represented as a game. A justified reason why the Six-Axis controls exist on the PS3.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed - I can't believe that we've got to the standards that a polished PSone looking game can be sold so cheap. Its an amazing feat and will no doubt pave the future of small digital download games. Freaking brilliant soundtrack. Great gameplay because I missed the original first time around

R&C:Q4B - Also amazing, but expected due to the skill of Insomniac.
More retail game quality, shocking as a download. Good for those to test the water if they'd like to try the series and take it for a spin. Brilliant for those of us who craved more R&C after ToD anyway. I hope more series get this treatment.

Future games I'm looking out for -
Wipeout HD, Crash Commando, Fat Princess, flOwer, The Maw.

So because he made a fair good downloadable game at 10$, he thinks he can face off masters like Hideo Kojima insulting them?
Let's see if Bionic Commando (3D) fulfills the promises. And if not, he may regret his arrogance.

15 - I love Bionic Commando....
I think that it did set the standard. Tons of options, tons of modes, lots of secrets...and all of this on top of a wonderful remake. The only thing that this game was missing is the "original NES Bionic Commando" as a playable option. All in all, would have been bought even as a $30 game.

Waaaah... thanks to you, now we can't get away with half-@ssed downloadable games...

Ben should just tell them to have a Coke and a smile, and shut the f*** up.

@Sangria

Go read the article again... THEY CALLED JUDD AND CALLED THEM @SSHOLES... NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND...

@Rich1631:

To hell with the trophies, you misguided little man...
