Confirmed: The new 80 gig PS3s have 65nm RSX chips

There were internet rumours weeks ago which suggested that the new ps3 models might be having the 65nm RSX chips. Well edepot now confirms that the newer models are indeed carrying the shrunk RSX chips

Updates:

Yeah, A slot drive is easier to put in a smaller device.

That's what apple uses in their Mac Mini, and even what the Wii uses.

So a slim PS3 should hopefully retain the slot-loading mechanism.

I'll probably buy another PS3 model once Sony introduces a PS3 Slim, and I definantly agree with Jamie Foxx, I hope that Sony keeps the slot loading disc drive with the slim PS3, and I definantly wouldn't trade my 60GB PS3 just to get this PS3 with the 65nm RSX because the PS3 has already been a reliable system from the start and there's literally no worries of overheating. A PS3 slim is probably a LONG way off, but I definantly want a more lighter and more portable PS3 because I travel with my PS3 a lot.

Yeah I'll also confirm it. Bought an extra DS3 for the heck of it but the new 80 gig does come with one. I had a previous 40 gig and sold it for the new sku. I haven't really noticed a difference in weight but it does run much cooler and I can't even tell it's on sometimes because it's so quiet. It's a good deal if you dont already have a 60 gig.

This is what I've been waiting for. The 65/65nm version...couldn't come at a better time. Last thing I'm going to wait on is the next price reduction before I buy my 2nd PS3.

If you're wondering why we'll have 2 in the house, I will play games and watch movies on mine, my dad will most likely just watch movies, and he doesn't like the hassle of plugging in into the hdtv, it takes like 20 minutes :O

When the XB360 with smaller (read more reliable) GPU was released - the buzz was how people planned to try and get the more reliable one when they trade in etc.

With the PS3 it is - oh, a smaller chip, OK, big deal, what are the benefits except for power savings and maybe a slimline. Not the rush to rip it open and check for better reliabiltiy - because except for the very rare false reports of PS3 failing - it is a reliable machine. i would wager that it is most probably the most reliable console ever released. Kudos to Sony for this.

Those are still rare occurrences though.

And also, the YLoD can mean it overheated, but instead of breaking, it shuts off and the yellow light tells you that. It means "gimme a break, plz." Instead of "blargh I am ded." It can also mean HDD failure, but meh. You can upgrade your HDD for less than the cost of a game if you want to. And don't say "but I lost mah datas!" because you should be backing it up anyway.

Sure there are PS3 that have failed...but it is mostly for overheating or dead bluray diodes. They have fixed this during to 40Gb models...so the 80GB models should be very very reliable...much more than the Xbox 360, or even the Wii (yes the wii has hardware issues to..but no where near the Xbox 360)

I hope so but it's hard to say since there are many cost (e.e.g marketing, tech support, warranty) embedded with the sale of each PS3. At the very least, this will help improve the life and cost incurred by the PS3. The PS3 is all about the software this year, so I think the main profit will come from its big exclusive titles.
