Dead Space Banned in Germany, Japan and China

In a posting on the official Dead Space Web site, EA community manager Ben Swanson announced that the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game "will be banned in Germany, China, and Japan." Swanson did not say what indications the team has received to suggest the imminent banning of the sci-fi survival horror game.

Dead Space is set for an October 14 console release in North America (October 20 for the PC version), with a European launch set for October 24. As of press time, EA representatives had not returned requests for clarification on the nature of the bans or why they are expected to come.

Oh yeah... Japan is going to ban a game to help out Capcom
Get real.

Decapitation, and probably the dismemberment wouldn't sit well with them I guess.
Anyone remember how you can't get decapitated in the Japanese version of RE4? I don't think that's the first game to be censored like that in Japan either

Actually I think in Ninja Gaiden you can't decap people either. I'm not sure about all the gore in NG2 though

Pretty strange...

Dismemberment = Banned
Tentacle hentai = Rated 12+

...but I guess we're the exact opposite in America. Sex seems to be much more taboo in gaming. Show a side boob and FOX News will declare the moral fabric of society being ripped to shreds. Excess violence will still bring the whiners out of whatever cave they've been crying in, but you can get away with some pretty gruesome stuff before bans are even considered.

with all the crazy violent horror films/porn available in japan, i hardly think a videogame can be more disturbing than that.

They can't really outlaw it in the U.S. But, if it gets an AO rating, then it won't be sold, since no stores, at least big retailers, sell AO games. -.-

So, yea, then they would have to delay it, to tone it down. Which would suck. =/

Do these people not realise it's a game ?, i complain about a lot of things we put up witj in the UK but i wouldn't say that our guys are bad for this sort of thing, hope it doesn't put it back now because this is looking like it'll be good.

8 - Importing the game...
Can't they just import the game for the PS3 and PC (assuming that they can understand English)?

I don't get all these banning game issues for reals.

*spoilers*

but part of the game story relates a internal "cult" that had the idea about the monoliths found buried on the surface of the planet were a creation of God itself, it manifest many visions to certain people, and the Cult believed this was the word of god, and then committed mass suicide in order to get in touch with this "God"

in Asia they got the problem of religious cults with the idea of transcend their spirits with god with the suicide. But I don't have an exact idea of why in Germany too unless they got Asian religious groups related with this religions.

13 - Que?
The thing that bugs me is.. All the gore in this game (main character aside) involves space aliens... I got it! Japan, China and Germany are 3 nations ruled by space aliens in human skin-suits! It all makes sense now.. See what happens when you put two & two together? MAGIC! Damn you Japan! I knew humans couldn't make games like MGS4!

But seriously, I don't want this game to flop in sales if it is as good as it looks.

20 - pretty lame
That's blatant censorship. It's that the whole point of the ratings system and the parents. To keep "questionable" material out of the hands of their innocent lil kids. Anyway, i just got a little bit more interested in this game for some reason. WrTF banned?

Thats cause you fail to know what "banned" actually includes in Germany, say opposed to "banned" in Australia.

Short version:

Normally games get RATED by the USK, an industry led group that follows the youth protection laws in Germany to set an age level for every game. A game that does not get an age level is automatically AO (adult only) AO material may not be sold via mail order as non adults may get their little greedy hands on it without their parents knowing ...

If a game is NOT rated there is a process for the local youth protection agencies to request the item marked as "not suitable for non adults" this will work like an AO rating only with stricter terms:

You may not advertise or actively promote a "banned" title, but you may buy it from a store as an adult if said store has it "below the counter".

But you have to ask for the game. Most better gamestores can also order a game that has been "banned" for you upon request.

Compared to the AU and UK version of banning, that makes it illegal to sell something, this is usable though it makes it more difficult to buy certain stuff. Sadly console manufacturers tend to deny selling products without a rating, hence Gears of War never launched in Germany as it wasn't granted a rating. You can easily order a version from Austria though, as its the same language version. Its simply a result of the German history that resulted in a cultural aversion to gross violence. No problem getting kinky pr0n, but violence gets you off limit , fast. Movies don't face such a hard time cause "art" is specially protected in the bill of rights and may not be limited.
