Can someone explain to me, in fewer than 20 words, what home is for? I'm puzzled :|

Less than 20 words no, a list of it's features would require more than that. At it's core, it's social networking, but step back and it reveals a horde of other applications and functions.

Frankly, spending 10 minutes on google will provide you with all the information you need, warning, you may have to break the 20 word barrier though.

PS... I broke the rule to so if you managed to read my comment then the worlds your reading oyster.

It's a 3D (Dimensional) representation of the PlayStation Network.

Hmmm... If it's for social networking, then home needs to be as accessible as possible. Otherwise I won't use it.

I used to think it was a cool idea, but I lost interest somewhere after the 10th delay. I'm sure it'll be a hit when it's finally released, though. Free stuff is always welcome.

1.7 - What are you asking this for?
You seem to know quite a bit about Home already, take a look at this post from you a few days ago.

Here is a quote from another of Thor's comments

"Yep reading some of the comments people have made about that, I agree with some when they say home is just a "virtual chat room with some minigames". I wish everyone could take off their fanboy goggles and not simply accept that they want home because sony says so, then take a look at home for what it really is, a chat room, then ask yourself if you really want it, and if it would really improve your gaming experience." -Thor

I'm not trolling. I do know a lot about home. But I still don't know what its purpose is. Articles seem to contradict other articles in terms of what it's FOR. Is it like the sims and for customization and building up your appartment? Is it for meeting other playstation users online in a non-gaming environment? Or is it for launching into games from home? There is not a simple purpose for home, yes it DOES a lot of things, but it doesn't really have a purpose.

Socialicing
Mini Games
Cinema demoing movies
Web-like Shops going 3D?

That's what I know (and dont know). More excited about what else can be in this concept. I'm intrigued.

6 - one concern
I am excited for Home and check my email daily for a beta invite...however I'm a little concerned with one aspect, although superficial. I am not black but the avatars which are black...look weird. They don't have black facial features at all and the skin tone looks off. Of all the previews I've watch of Home, that was the one thing that stuck out. Does anyone else think similarly? I'm not knocking Home, just making an observation that some people might think is important. No one else has brought it up yet...

6.1 - In control
I believe you are in control of the facial features and skin tone.
I'm not in the beta, but from what I recall, you can adjust all of that.

totally off base dude. It seems you clearly have not seen or investigated this to any significant degree cause avatar skin tone and colour are not close to being an issue for HOME avatars.

You have NO worries on this particular issue, they've done way more and gone far beyond than any avatar system I've ever seen in this regard.

6.3 - I don't think you understand
Granted, every individual can create their own avatar to their hearts content...however, the preset options that are black don't look "right". Skin color is one thing, facial characteristics are another. If you click on the link and look at the preset character creation you will know what I mean. I've watched various videos in which other racial/ethnic groups looked fine, but others didn't. The videos I speak of can be found on the PSN if your curious. Look out for the black dude with white hair.

Edit: Why do some people get so defensive over HOME? Its not the coming the second coming or anything like that. Its not worth insulting someone over. The most rabid fanboy's on this site need to truly analyze whats important in life. HOME will be sweet, but I'm not going to treat someone like an a$$ because they brought up a point or question, valid or not. You would never (I hope not) treat someone with such disrespect in person. Why is the internet any different? Better yet, don't answer that.

How can an optional service help with community interaction when some of the community won't even use it?

I don't understand either. From what I can tell, home is still segregated into servers of 64 users each. So you won't always be able to join one with all your friends because they'll be split up into lots of different servers. So you'll meet new people all the time. Who you can't exactly start a random conversation with.

When you do manage to meet up with a group of people, it could happen like this:
Start a game of warhawk together... oh wait none of us has a fast enough connection to host a 12 player game (I myself can only host 4), OK start a game of COD4 together, oh wait it's not supported in home. Resistance? No... MGO? No... Soul calibur? No.... GTA4 online? No... OK let's go play bowling.

Finished bowling. Not _the_ most fun game I've ever played exactly. Won't be doing that again. I think I'll close home and start up a game of warhawk. Oh look here's the members of my clan, this one's in this game. *Joins his game*

2 hours later and I've had a great few games of warhawk with some people in my clan. Next time I'll do that straight away instead of going into home and meeting up with random people and playing bowling.

What you've just described boils down to what we call "opinions". You don't like the HOME stuff, fantastic. Do you also play Second Life? Sims? No? Ok then, now we have a starting point, the whole pretend in an virtual world type entertainment isn't for you. Enjoy Warhawk (I know I do :D) but there is no way when I step out of my own shoes and see the HOME experience for what it is that I can deny it's going to have a HUGE following.

Haven't you seen for example the weirdos that fret over their clothes in WOW? People LOVE (and not only gay people despite common gamer belief) to play pretend and dressup and collect crap and show off their stuff. If you don't believe that, then you haven't seen people showing off their XBOX Live! stats badges all over the freaking internet showing off what they are playing, how many Accomplishments they have, etc.

It's all about showing off and MS would KILL for HOME and the XBOTS would eat it up and herald MS as innovative. Look at how most are reacting over silly Mii ripoffs like it's the savior for the console. Jesus Christ in a Mii ripoff form.

And Guitard, isn't Live Gold optional? Don't people optionally sign up for that and increase the Live playerbase? Not every person has to sign up for Gold to increase the playerbase and not every person on PS3 has to use HOME to make the experience worthwhile.
