EyePet: Sony's true '09 system seller

PSB writes:

Sony unleashed a blitz of new and exciting announcements at last week's Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. From new hardware developments like the PSP-3000 to game showings like Heavy Rain, Sony held no punches at the convention. As a result of this stampede of announcements, some games were obviously left behind, receiving little to no attention from the press. And its really a shame too, because one of those games left in the shadows is potentially Sony's biggest system seller of 2009.

Sony has SO MANY upcoming "system sellers" that it's hard, even for Sony, to say which one will move the most PS3's. Sony's ever-expanding line-up just continues to amaze me and gamers alike. It's all about the exclusives and Sony wins in that department by default. Every year, starting in 2008, will be year of the PS3.

1.1 - Good Ports of Mulitplatorm for 2008, 2009 and Good exclusive for Ps3
= Much, much more hardware sales.

Eyepet goes much more beyond than what Nitendogs can do.

The graphics for this game is quite soothing and the tralier is made very well.

Sony is cool. They give us good hardcore games (KZ2, Resistance 2, Socom, Mag, etc.) but they also give innovatives games for casuals gamers (LBP, EyePet).

5 - Im not a big fan of these games but...
Seeing how successful nintendogs was, u can almost bet this will be just as successful since they are taking this game beyond the likes of what u can do on eyepet compared to nintendogs. This will be a huge success in japan as will LBP will be aswell and almost every other region and definately will be a system seller.

Was that actually people playing the game?

Or was it a conceptual piece meant to show what the game WOULD be like?

If that was actually gameplay then I'm sold.

It has real potential to be a system seller.

Its the same basic stuff Nintendo based there system and games off of and look how good they did.

I won't be getting this for any reason but there are many people who would

Sony just needs to advertise the mess out of this, along with LBP(a game I will be getting), and bundle it with ps3's and it could sell like pot(and crack).

13.2 - i hate to say it,
but thanks to the Wii, people are more receptive to concepts like this than they were in the past.

i think a lot of people will find the Eyepet absolutely adorable, and a casual, non-gamer family that happens to be upgrading to HD may find reason to plunk down the $400 (probably under $300 by the time Eyepet releases late next year), for a Playstation 3, as they will have their HDTV already, the PS3 has Blu Ray and web access, and upscales existing DVDs.

i mean, if me and my fiance had children, and i didn't have a Playstation 3, a game like Eyepet would certainly make me consider picking one up, as the Playstation 3 itself is a device the whole family can enjoy.

Eyepet is a potential "barrier breaker." by that i mean it has the potential to get families that have only one or two gamers to pick up a console, gather around, and play. once that barrier is broken, it probably wouldn't be too hard to get them to play a game like flower, or flOw, or Singstar, or Buzz. fun games in their own right, and also family oriented.

SCEE seems to be the development branch that is tasked with trying things off the beaten path, or being more experimental with established genres (ie, The Getaway).

the other arms of Sony have their own "specialties" as well; the US branches tend to focus more on the big blockbusters that American audiences (and ideally worldwide audiences) respond to, like God of War, Twisted Metal, Uncharted, and SOCOM.

the Japan studios, naturally, crank out games that appeal to the Japanese sensibilities, but lean more towards arty, atmospheric pieces (ie, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Siren). these could also potentially appeal to a worldwide audience.

it's cool to see that each branch is doing their own thing, while still sharing technology information that will help bring up the level of quality all around on PS3 games.

The key word in your comment is "before." There have ALWAYS been casual games floating out there, but now the Wii has introduced the casual market to those games. When someone thinking "the Wii sure looks family friendly" sees EyePet, they may think "the PS3 sure looks family friendly."

By the time this game comes out though, HDTVs are bound to be more affordable, and I'm sure the parents would love to try out their fancy-pants TVs with some Blu Ray.

Times have changed, and we can't assume that what happened "before" will be applicable today; except that quality innovation on any front by any company pays off.

Funny ... how the world goes... every PS3 and x360 fan where bashing the Wii, and now the PS3 and X360 are becoming the Wii.

If i did not know better, i would of said that this was a Wii game. So much bashing the Wii, now Microsoft and Sony are copying the Wii's type of games... how the world goes around... LOL ... and the fans are loving it.

I point above, where I said Sony have done this kind of thing before.

In the process though, around the same time this game hits, they have Heavy Rain and God of War III.

What are Nintendo releasing to coincide with Wii Sports 2 and Wii Music?

Nintendo doesn't have a single game that plays out like this. NintenDOGS for the Nintendo DS is the closest thing.

17.3 - the difference between the Wii,
and the Playstation 3 and 360, is that the Wii is primarily catering to ONE demographic; the casual or non-gamer, while throwing out a Mario, Zelda, or Metroid bone to keep their loyal fanbase of 25+ years content for a spell while Nintendo grows fat off of mom and dad, and grandma and grandpa.

it's not like Eyepet and Little Big Planet are the ONLY games hitting the PS3 for a LONG TIME.

there's SOCOM, Wipeout, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, Killzone 2, White Knight Story, inFamous, Heavy Rain, FFXIII, FF Versus XIII, God of War 3, Team Ico's games, Valkyria Chronicles, constant Warhawk expansions, and so many other games that cater to the CORE demographics of the Playstation fanbase that it's not causing anyone not interested in games like Eyepet or Little Big Planet any distress for their existence.

and i didn't even MENTION the great multi-platform titles coming to the PS3 and 360 that the Wii just WON'T see (ie, Mirror's Edge, Rage, Bioshock, Borderlands, Dead Space, Bionic Commando, etc, etc).

i would feel sorry for sole Wii owners, but i've been saying that Nintendo would eventually abandon the core fanbase in favor of the casual dollars coming in for two years now, only to get cursed and called all sorts of names from the hardcore Nintendo fanboys.

i've been playing Nintendo consoles since i was 6 years old, when the NES launched in 1985. i've been a Nintendo fan and gamer ever since, but the Wii just ISN'T for me anymore, and what hurts the most is that Nintendo doesn't care. sure, they never cared, just like Sony and Microsoft don't care, but at least there are games hitting those consoles that appeal to me as a 29 year old male.

i LOVE games like Ratchet and Clank, Zelda, Metroid, Smash Brothers, Beyond Good and Evil, etc, so it's not a matter of blood, guts, t*ts, and @ss.

hell, the Gamecube had more games that excited me than the Wii does. and now Nintendo wants to say, "just wait until 2009, in the meantime, enjoy Paper Mario, Smash Bros, Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart, and a bunch of other games starring characters from the Mario world, while we prep, well, MORE Mario, Zelda, and Metroid for you, and by the way, there's a nice Animal Crossing in it for you too if you stick around?" (for the record, i really like Animal Crossing, and i still have my village on my GC memory card, though i imagine they are PISSED at me, and it's overrun with shrubs and roaches, because i haven't played the game in years)

sure, the REALLY big first and second party titles from Sony like God of War 3, Heavy Rain, and Killzone 2 are still months away, but it's not like a PS3 owner is STARVING for good games, both exclusive and multi-platform, while we wait. not like Nintendo fans are.

tell me, where's Fallout 3 for the Wii? where's Saint's Row 2, Eternal Sonata, Far Cry 2, Dark Void, Valkyria Chronicles, Prince of Persia, Afro Samurai, The Godfather II, Resident Evil 5, MMOs, like DCUOnline, The Agency, and so many more games i can't think of at the moment that are pushing technology in industry changing ways?

where is this gaming revolution that Nintendo promised that waggle stick would usher in? it's been nearly two years, and in two years, all we have to show for it are the same Mario, Zelda, Metroid games, a lack of quality 3rd party games (barring exceptions like Rayman Raving Rabbids, Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes, and Mad World is looking sweet), and an @SSLOAD of shovelware and mini-games.

THAT'S why people are frustrated with the Wii, because time and time again, they announce more and more shovelware and mini-games, while 360 and PS3 owners are basking in actual next generation gaming.

it's why when a game like EyePet is announced, most hardcore gamers don't bat and eye, because it's not the only thing on Sony's plate. Avatars? Lips? derivative? certainly, but it's not all 360 gamers are going to be jamming on this year.

it's hardly the same thing.

THAT'S your difference between the two next gen consoles and the Wii.

Bubbles for figboy.

I think Yahtzee said it best with "random button mashing has been replaced with random stick waggling", but, fundamentally, Nintendo have done nothing with the Wii.

Up until the PlayStation launched, I was first and foremost Nintendo.

I have Nintendo consoles with Sega as back up, but even after the PlayStation came out I had Nintendo consoles as back up because both the N64 and GameCube had games that were worthy of the term "classic". Now I own a Wii, but the 360 is definitely my back up because, frankly, there's just nothing worth playing on Wii, so I was forced to find my back up gaming elsewhere. I wouldn't even own a 360 if it wasn't for Nintendo's absolutely lax attitude to gaming.

Nintendo managed to do something I never thought they'd manage, something I feared with the DS. They've managed to alienate someone who has, until the Wii, be a supporter of Nintendo, who has spent more time on Nintendo consoles than any other, someone who happens to buy a lot of games.

I doubt I'll ever buy another Nintendo console, not if they continue down this path they're on now. The worst part? Nintendo have never lost money from a console gen, they may not have made anything crazy in terms of profit like they do now, but they never lost money, and they still had the games.

18 - It's all about the commercials
If you make a really good line of commercials, people will buy it in droves. I know when the Wii came out, all the commercials they had for it were really catchy, even if the games themselves in reality were only so so. Good TV advertising makes a BIG difference in how many products you sell.
