SEGA's latest PS3 exclusive disappoints

Ordinarily, a new SEGA racer – particularly one that hails from the arcades – is our cue to get very excited indeed.

With the unrivalled abilities of SEGA's AM teams to craft deep, yet accessible coin-op titles and the company's expertise in bringing these to console, any home port is usually worth keeping an eye on.

Which is why we were rather looking forward to Initial D Extreme Stage. Based on Initial D Arcade Stage 4, the PS3 exclusive racer launched in Japan a few weeks ago – and given how good the previous two console ports were, our hopes were high.

Unfortunately, it seems that SEGA's usual top form has deserted it on this occasion, as our exclusive screenshot gallery shows.

Although there are no obvious faults with the game's graphics, it must be said that – between the flat textures, the lack of detail and the primitive special effects – there's not a lot right with it, either.

Indeed, we'd go so far as to say it looks like little more than a high-res PS2 title.

Well I dont see how a game can flop unless it was expected to be great. I mean I could say that Iron Man (the game) flopped, but no one expected it to be good. Other games, like Haze and Too Human, did flop because of the hype surrounding them.

MS paid for Halo scores. Yes 30,000,000 dollars in add money to the magazines who do the reviews is paying. Especially when people get fired over bad reviews(Kane & Lynch) because the company threatens to pull the ads... Who wants to miss out on Halo 4 advertising dollars.

even the anime doesn't look too good! I love Initial D despite of the art style, which can be considered as 'ugly'! but the story is good! I can see that Sega is preserving the original art style from the anime/manga of Initial D for this games and what makes this game looks 'dissapoint' is because it's on PS3, where people always assume the graphics should be top notch and super beautiful!

The majority of sites has given Halo 3 a better rating than MGS4. So I guess everybody is biased, huh? Stop with the excuses already.

Edit:
Halo 3 averaged 94% while MGS4 averaged 93%. Both highly rated games but Halo 3 just squeezes by as a better rated game. Not to mention Konami had restrictions on reviewers. They pretty much said don't comment on the flaws of the game.

Gamers expectations are higher now thanks to Graphics
Like Gears 2, Fable 2, KZ2, R2 and Heavy rain, so now if we
look at games with lesser graphics some people will simply
avoid the title.

It's like me and the internet, years ago I had dial
up and thought it was cool, now I use cable and would
never revert back to dial up.

I have the game and its definitely not a very high quality port compare to something like VF5. Its not horrible, it looks as good as the arcade and sharper if you use HDMI. And online mode is good enough for most arcade fans.

This is a game that is built from an animation and so people who are buying this game aren't expecting

REAL surrounding (because its the animation world)
REAL car (because its the animation world)
REAL controls (because its the animation world..)

instead, if this game gets you the taste to be one of the character in the animation Initial D, and to get excited during the race, it gets its job done...

Don't rate the game base on what you think a racer should be..think about who is intended for the game, and you don't call it a flop...also, the game supports EXCELLENT online racing...

Ever though about what California rolls exists? Because Americans like ROLLS better! Different gamers got different tastes...

This is a damn good game, even for a 5 year old arcade port. It has some of the most addictive drifting and the most technical tracks. The have all the drifts favs (S15, EJ22, RX8, RX7, AE86, etc). The tracks are all the traditional japanese variety.

Most drifting in games suck, this is still arcadey but fun as hell. You definetly want a force feedback wheel though.

This game is only sold in Asia. You can buy the game off play-asia for 40.00, the online version is like 80.

You guys can rip on this game all you want, but look at the 360 porting house of the dead. Its more for a sentimental effect. This game is a classic, if you haven't heard of it maybe you need to get out more. You can't learn everything on the internet...the fact that the author is trying to attack this game shows how ignorant he is. He probably doesn't even realize the hard-core following this game actually has.

@ GEC - LMAO @ R&C flop attempt. Quest for Booty is a downloadable game that is 6 points higher than Too Human and 20 more than Lair and Haze. How many 9's does Too Human have on Meta? Still Too Human is on a 7 out of 10 a good game

2007: Lair with a 5.3 average
2008: Haze with a 5.6 average

wait not so fast. R1 also wasn't on or over 9 out of 10. R2 on graphics looked like R1, no progression.

LBP is the only game on the PS3 I think is interesting. On the other hand, the 360 has more on or over 9 out of 10 average console exclusive games already, so the PS3 needs to get their act up a bit. One very important detail

Lair was hyped to be AAA along Heavenly Sword (that scored just an 8 good game but not great), but got a 5.3 in the end.

Haze was hyped to be the AAA Halo 3 killer.

Both games got hyped much much more then the game you just mentioned. Because both systems have crappy games. But the PS3's flops were the most hyped ones. Like Too Human also was overhyped, but still got a 7 out of 10 which is much much better then the Sony flop award winning games just mentioned.

lol That still doesn't change the fact that the ps3 is an over hyped flop as a game console. If I had paid money for one, I would immediately send it back to Sony and demand my money back, or they would be facing a false advertisement suit. Citing the PS3 doesn't perform to the level they claimed prior to it's launch. Then take a $2 mil settlement from Sony, because they would know that they were f*cked. i don't like most of the games for the 360 and you won't change that. i would rather play Lair or Haze than Too Human, Mass Effect or Crackdown.

i don't care about a 5/10 when i think the game is fun.

you're just jealous that the ps3 gets all the interesting games. have you played Siren? this is the best fvckin horror survival game i've ever played and it's exclusive only on ... yeah, PS3 ;-)

there are so many great games coming out, i can't count them all.

i can't wait for Motorstorm 2, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Afrika, Wipeout HD, Home, Killzone 2, Flower, The Last Guy, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Eye Pet, Life with Playstation, Socom, MAG, The Agency, Fat Princess, a better Bioshock, GT5, Rag Doll Kung Fu, FF versus XIII ... OMG! this is too much for my wallet.

btw. i'm also waiting for Gears 2 for my 360 ;-)
