Rumour: "£40 million spent on Home so far,"

Videogaming247: We've just overheard some chaps talking about Home on the train to Leipzig from Berlin. This is what was said:

* £40 million has been spent on Home so far.
* Home's been in development for five years.
* Home was originally a PlayStation 2 initiative.

Home's likely to make a decent appearance in Sony's press conference at Games Convention this week.

5 years, well it better be super great when its released.

Although i still dont see people choosing to dance and play poor-mans bowling in HOME instead of a real PS3 game. They really should of focused on making the best 2D interface before going 3D.

no, home is mostly about the chatting and meeting new people. all the other features are just perks. Besides they seem to have done well with it, it looks amazing.

Oh you mean like Too Human should be super great as well.

When something takes that long to make, it usually isnt a good thing. Home will be cool, but I dont see myself using much unless I have a clan or something that really utilizes it.

just be glad its going to be free, thinking spending that amount of money and give to people for free with an outcome like that, what would you ask for.

There will be trophies specific to Home so that will be the incentive to play the games that fill the lounge areas.

50+ million USD on a complete online vitual world with Home or 50+ million USD on a few GTAIV expansion packs??

Hey man I am not saying this out of spite or anything but I sure hope that that doesn't mean home isn't going to be free. As I am sure that the GTA packs won't be free. I do agree with the above poster that they need to master 2-d and they should make it 3d. It's kind of like XP and Vista. Vista is great but it is just a graphical XP and XP is less of a system hog. Unfortunately MS pulled the plug on XP and I am not sure if home is going to be mandatory and if so, will they still support the original os if people choose not to have home?

That is so true. This money is by far better spent on something like Home than exclusive rights to DLC to a game which was overhyped.

thats what i was thinking too, for us americans thats a little less than 80 million on a game/program they dont plan on charging for, aside from the many microtransactions ofcourse, what i would really like to see from home is it be what comes up when you start up your ps3 then you walk to the movie area of you "home" or game area, instead of xmb, fully integrate it to the ps3,

This whole article is about some guy was eavesdropping on some other guy on the train having a conversation about home?

if that isn't a reliable source, then i don't know what is!

the only news-worthy stuff is the 40 million budget for home.
everyone already knows that it's been in development since the "end" of the ps2 -_-

and even that 40million budget is not really news worthy, i mean, a man on a friggin' train.

wow...

so home has a way bigger budget than any real game so far..except for killzone (rumored £60m)
i mean £40m is just about 70/80m dollars, and the fact that it was an inicial project for PS2 just makes you think about the things/games that haven't even been announced...

It´s nice to see that they put some real effort into it, an actual release date on leipzig would also be nice..

The source is a "man on the train." I didn't think a source could be less qualified than a new account post on neogaf. I guess I was wrong.

The whole rumour is seriously far fetched.

If you are talking those kind of figures then you would have to be talking about server expenditure in order to be able to support home, and not just the software dev costs.

9 - Has anyone thought of advertising costs?
Seriously a feature on a console this big HAS to be advertised.
Even though its free to use, I can see it having a pretty big advertising campaign in order to make the PS3 appeal to more households.
If its almost ready, why wouldn't they promote it to the potential users?

9.1 - I've never gotten into the SIMS...
...craze but HOME could be very intriguing for those folks who did enjoy that type of online lobby socializing experience. Likewise they don't have any additional cost to participate.

The marketing potential is huge and the advertising should get underway ASAP if they do decide to release this "thing" this year.

you know what will be really good<better than anyone could think of,its "Mods".oh yes, "MODS"<think of the endless possibilities of them, we can make any object we want, better yet,"SELL" them, haha(yet that will never happen, sony wont get any money from this),lol.but yeah i think sony should let us be who we r,and not jus ran down by a law inside home>but yeah, i think that would be the dawn of defeat for 2life(becuz they do the same things)but yeah,i hope people dont look as home being a 2nd comming of Second Life, becuz to me, they r similar, yet very different. who ever made the comment "Fanboyism is stupid". its really not becuz sony,ms,and nintendo dont have to argue back and foward to each other saying."oh yeah, my system can beat the S@it out of your console yet im 250 cheaper than you or yeah im a ps3 with many capabilities, yet they havent been unleashed :(. its ok to be a fan of something, or better yet, a fanboy.(becuz im a sony fanboy ever since ps) but jus as long as you dont fight about it and crap, thats what i think

40 million pounds. They would never make there money.

They don't even spend that much on there AAA titles.

Actually you will be surpised by the amount of games costing nearly £40 million. Home will feature adverts, Home will also sell clothles etc as a way for Sony to make money. If you want to spin it, think of Home as Habbo/Second Life its just another way to make money.

40 million british pounds = 74,392,000.00 US dollars

GTA4 cost $100million MGS4 cost close to $100.

I'm sure that there are plenty fo games that cost close to $75million!

Just give it to us and make improovements with firmware later on. I'm so tired of seeing Home for so many years in the news but actually never getting it.

Sometimes I wonder if it's even real.

Sony will recover all cash spent in HOME in 3.5 years.I'm quite sure on this guess.

Imagine how much more PS3s will be sold because of this virtual world, not to mention the thousands of things that will be sold inside this "free acess" world.

BTW,Sony should accept any international credit card since the USA version of HOME will come first.I bet that many thousandas of users around the globe would gladly register thenselves to buy stuff indide the north american and european HOMEs.

And talking about the huge PS3 public in the Latin america they will not have a HOME any time soon so that is why I insist to say that Sony should accept any credit card(like the Wii does) to be able to have a cash return ASAP.

Any software that is in development for so long is in trouble. As I see it, they've lost sight of their original aims in order to focus on creating a really graphically impressive world where you can customise your character and your flat, without thinking what you will use home for. The idea of home, is of a meeting space where you can see your online friends, compare trophies, maybe do one of the silly minigames to pass the time, then launch into a game together. Home has only had game launching for less than a year now. That should have been a key feature from the start. Home still doesn't have a trophy room, though perhaps the game-themed rooms will replace this idea.

Look at trophies. How many games support them at the moment? Is it 4? I know more are coming, but most PS3 games don't have trophies. What makes you think that many games will support in-home game launching? What if I want to play one of the 99% of games that don't support it with my friends? I won't use home.

Home is still buggy and lacking in features. People in the beta have, on this very site, said that home is not ready to be released. From what I have read and seen, about all home is good for at the moment is running around and then launching a game of warhawk (or motorstorm). I can do that from within warhawk. I just go down my friends list and click join game.

It's not like trophies, where it doesn't really matter if games support them, because people are happy enough with the game itself, and trophies are an added bonus. If not enough games support home, then no one will use home. If only 2/5 of the games that you play support game launching, you are not going to use home to do that - you'll meet your friends,

"Hey do you want to play a game of socom?"
"Yeah sure let's quit out of home so we can"

And the point of home just fades away.

If there is any other reason for anyone to use home, please speak up and prove me wrong ;)

You don't have to quit out of anything, Home allows you to set up multiplayer games directly within Home (options, rounds, players etc) and jump DIRECTLY into multiplayer games.

At least, it did in a video I saw/had this feature in place.

I'm not in the beta, so I have no idea if this is still here/working.

Yes you can launch games from directly within home. Warhawk and motorstorm. There really aren't a lot of games that support that feature as of now, and I can't see that many games up to when home is released will support it either. I used trophies as an example of a feature that is patched into only a very small percentage of games, and games are coming out, after trophies have been released, without trophies.
