Price Drop For PS3 Games
24
Although not announcing it in its online store, reports are coming in that U.S. generalist retailer Target is selling games including Need for Speed: Carbon, Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Tony Hawk's Project 8 for $39.99 – well below the $59.99 retail price set at launch.
This follows reports that Best Buy – among others – has actually been holding PS3 stock (hardware and software) since December 21st. This 'strategy' apparently relates to the fact that various Best Buy outlets only have between 25 to 60 units each ready to go for by December 31st.

Yea this is not a good sign if you are a sony fan. This is FAR to early to have a price drop of 20 dollars, most will not understand that and think its simply a good sale but I have a feeling Target is not happy with sony at the moment. Remember Target was one of the first retailers to dump UMD when they were a bust and they seem to be bailing early on the standard PS3 game prices.
Its a combo thing.. first, not a ton of PS3 units out there (but the 360 had about the same units out at this time last year and we saw no price drop on games till March or so)
Second.. PRICE PRICE PRICE.. the PS3 is FAR too expensive for a GAME MACHINE... the attach rate will be 1 maybe 2 games per console for a while... I have been saying since last E3.. that price point of 500-600 is going to kill the PS3

6 - Uhh...
How is Sony making money when retailers are slashing the price of PS3 games? The retailer still gets their cut, the developer and publisher theirs, so Sony is the one probably losing out, they only get the Licensing fee paid by the dev/publisher to release the game on PS3. Believe me, if the Developer, Publisher or Retailer were taking the hit, it would be even worse news than it already is for Sony, because who would want to make or sell any more PS3 games?

7 - Sorry to bust your bubble...
The prices are a sale not a price drop. They had all these games at Target for 39.99 for both the 360 and PS3(not just one system). Heck, Gears was on sale for 39 also. If I didn't already have it, I would have picked up a copy. They also had Zelda for Wii/GC on sale for the same price.
As for hardware, Amazon had a batch of PS3s and Wiis up this morning. The Wii sold out immediately and the 60 gig sold out an hour ago. The 20 gig is still up for grabs., I would have snagged it, but I will wait for MS to drop its price forcing PS3 to drop theirs.

8 - Retailers are stockpiling consoles!!!
Eat it Sony fanboys. Your precious sales figures are WRONG!!! Most of those units that you claim are sold, are actually collecting dust in the back rooms of Best Buy, Target and Circuit City.
A $20 price drop on games by retailers means they are too heavily stocked and trying to liquidate at or near cost just to get rid of them. Don't be surprised to see some retailers drop all PS3 support in the near future.

Try reading the f*ing article
" This follows reports that Best Buy – among others – has actually been holding PS3 stock (hardware and software) since December 21st. This ‘strategy’ apparently relates to the fact that various Best Buy outlets only have between 25 to 60 units each ready to go for by December 31st."
Retailers are withholding consoles so they will have them for the new year. They are not being sold, they are being HOARDED at the retail level.

8.3 - Well...
Recently I went to my local Best Buy, Target, Toys R US, Circuit City, Walmart then called EBGames, Gamestop and Software Etc and guess what... NO PS3's anywhere. And i'm in Richmond, VA.. not exactly the most populated city mind you but there seem to be a lot of d*mn people around here and you would think with this being Circuit City headquarters they would cut us some slack but nope.
So there may be some Best Buys out there hoarding PS3's but get off your high horse if you think that crap is all over the place.

8.4 - Are you paying attention??
The article says they are hoarding PS3 consoles. When a retailer hoards something to build demand, they aren't going to tell you "Yeah, come on down we have 25 on a shelf in the back" they are going to tell you "No, sorry we don't have any and don't know when we will be getting more." Just because you walk in the store and don't see any on the shelf, does not mean they don't have any. They are refusing to sell them.

For a second there I thought I saw some MS suckups say that lowering the Price of these games was bad.
I view this as good news, now my PS3 game collection can grow.

9.1 - It is very bad
It is good for you as a consumer to get better prices in the short term, but it may be the first step in retailers turning their backs on Sony and not carrying PS3 anymore because it doesn't sell well enough for them to make a profit. Some places will likely sell out their stock and not reorder anymore. Without support from major retailers, PS3 is doomed.

If one target store reportedly has a few PS3 games at $40 instead of $60, and you automatically think Sony is doomed.

10 - This definitely isn't bad
This isn't a Sony is doomed thing at all. That's a ridiculous assumption to make.
The reason these prices are dropping is not because they are bad titles, or the system is bad.
If one store is doing it, it is because they are trying to draw people into their store.
If its the publisher doing it, it could be for a number of reasons.
If I sell 10 games @ $60, that's only $600 but if I find out that lowering the price to $40 might drive sales up.... I could sell 20 games @ $40 and make $800.
These games were released on multiple systems as well and in some cases (maybe all) these games had already been out on another system for at least a little while first.

10.2 - Putting words into my mouth that I didn't say
I didn't say that was the only explanation, I said it was one possible explanation.
Publishers hire analysts that evaluate their sales and how well their products are doing. If their analysts find that people feel the price point for a game is too high, they will lower the price in the hopes of sparking enough interest to overcome the price difference. It has happened in alot of cases. Games have dropped in price rapidly at times because the hope is more product will sell then.
Of course none of this matters since it was a sale, not a price cut. It's temporary. Many many stores do after Christmas sales on products to try to keep the money coming in. Go to Best Buy. Look at the number of sale tags out in the store. It's insane. They are trying to appeal to people to purchase more items after the holiday rush.
Again, I wasn't saying that cutting the price was done to move more units, I was saying it was a possibility. I don't work for the retail store, I don't work for the publishers. Neither do you. We can all sit here and speculate as to the reason, but there's no indication that this is negative thing towards Sony. Especially considering the sales are going on for all systems' games and are on some top-selling games as well.

11.1 - Sale, Not Cut
It's not just PS3 games. I can confirm there were other games for other systems (major titles including Gears of War and Rainbow 6 Vegas) being sold for less than $60.
It was a sale, not a price cut.

12 - Free Game With 360
Hmmm.... Call of Duty 2 is being given away free when you purchase an xbox 360 at Best Buy, they are also throwing in a $20 gift card on top of that.
I wonder if that means those items suck because they are cutting the price on them or sweetening the deal a bit with a sale?

..but, speaking for myself, I wasn't trying to make this bad news, but reading the article as is -it called the Target sale a "price drop", however once you read the article it does sound like just a sale....either way though, the point I was making is don't you find it somewhat "interesting" that a major retailer would be offering a sale on "brand new PS3 games" this close to launch? I mean a sale on COD2 or 360 games that have been out for awhile is "normal".....so all in all its not a big deal, but it does say something, don't you think?
