Rumor: Home Expanded Beta Release Date

As you probably already know, there will be a Home expanded beta opening it's doors to a group of lucky PS3 owners by the end of the summer. While European PlayStation owners have received confirmation E-mails as well as previous Home beta testers, the rest of us are stuck wondering when we will receive our shot to experience the revolutionary social gaming application. I have been in the BETA over a year. Others were invited. I had to to install Home again. Nothings changed except maybe the server. Here's the e-mail...

We are now moving into the next phase of PLAYSTATION®Home's evolution. As a current tester, we'd like you to continue participating in PLAYSTATION®Home.

Your existing PLAYSTATION®Home Beta will no longer work as of approximately August 14th, 2008. You will need to delete the old version of PLAYSTATION®Home in order to install the new Expanded Closed Beta Client. The bit about it arriving in america next week is true.
I'm in the UK and got my invite two days ago - was on home for a lot of yesterday.

The bit about sharing is Bull though. At least for the UK service. I'll quote the mail I got:
"Note: Promotional codes can only be used once and only the PSN Online ID we sent this email to will be able to connect to Home"

My wife tried using home last night on her sub account. It starts up and trieds to connect to the service but always resturns an error.

I'm afraid the servcie here in england is very much for the one person who gets the invite. I'd be very suprised if they did it any differently in the states!

i'm sick of hearing about home betas. yea, i want home and think it'll be cool.......if it ever releases. how long will sony drag this out? and really, enough talk about how sony wants to "get it right". there is also the idea that they need to launch this within 2 years of it being announced! the longer they drag this out, the less fresh it seems. i love the ps3 but this is starting to become ridiculous. i think sony has lost sight of the idea that they have to launch this thing for real at some point.

Play TV can only bee a Europe thing as its only Europe that has a digital TV standard established.

I can see home getting stupidly crowded already - if you had everyone in the world in the place Its just not going to work!
Its not so much the limit on how many characters can be in an area, its having to retrieve and store all the information about each and every character in the space that limits how many people can be in any one area at once. When you first enter an area, you can see that the avatars are 'ghosts' while the customized avatar data is read into the system for each person so that each avatar is properly displayed. It doesn't take too long but there has to be limits....and I'm assuming that a place like 'home square' will have many multiple versions existing all at the same time, as it could comfortably only hold a couple of hundred avatars at any one time. I'm assuming the system will cleverly make it so that people on each others friends lists will end up in the same space, and obviously anyone you invite in will appear in the area you occupy, but if I were to message you on here and say I'm in home square, and you were to log on and try and find me without me being one of my friends, I wouldn't be in your version of home square. You can't fit hundreds of thousands of totally customized avatars in one area!
When you actually experience it, and then think about what they are doing, there are a hell of a lot more difficulties involved in implementing it than you would imagine on the surface!
