Can Sony Lose The Havok Physics Engine?

An interesting development has reared its head into the exclusivity debate, with the signing of a "perpetual licensing agreement" that will make the Havok physics engines available to Microsoft Game Studios and its development partners. With such a close relationship forming, will we see Sony and Microsoft become seperated with exclusivity, not between game titles, but the actual engines they use? Could it be that future titles on the 360 will have the latest physics engine and those on Sony will not?

You do realize that ps3 exclusives like Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm and Folklore and cross platform titles such as Oblivion, Bioshock, Alone in the Dark, Assasin's Creed and Fallout 3 all use Havok, among many others. Do you think these titles are mediocre Bombibomb? I like those games thank you very much.

Halo 3 uses Havok as well, in fact, alot of games do, and it runs pretty good. I think Motorstorm 2 uses Havok as well, just like Motorstorm 1, but that has yet to be confirmed. Heck even all the source Engine based games use Havok, look at half-life 2.

HAVOK is owned by Intel BTW

hey, it will be powering the PS3 version of Red Faction Guerrilla which will look better on the PS3.

http://www.psxextreme.com/p...

"Speaking to Videogamer.com at THQ's Gamers Day event in San Francisco this past week, Carroll said the PS3 has the potential to "achieve better graphics than the Xbox 360." Carroll is the associate producer of the upcoming Red Faction: Guerilla, and he believes that once devs decide to dig further into the PS3, they will "find a very powerful system underneath." If you're not aware of the premise in his game, we must inform you that THQ is changing the standard first-person format to a a third-person format for this new RF installment. It will enjoy a simultaneous release on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC during THQ's fiscal year 2009, and we're certainly looking forward to it. When prompted, Carroll said they feel as if they're "doing rather well with the PS3."

"We have been getting the physics system, the Havok system and our own proprietary destruction system running on the SPUs, as well as our animations. We're seeing quite a decent speed improvement now that we've effectively got that running on the SPUs instead of the CPUs."

Of course, it was no secret that many developers were having serious trouble getting accustomed to the more complex hardware in the PS3. Obviously, it was no picnic early on for Carroll's team, either, but once they got into it, everything apparently started to gel. He said they "felt a tremendous pressure right at the beginning to learn as much as they could about the PS3," and they just had to expend more effort. In the end, when asked if he thought we'd see better graphics on the PS3 than on the Xbox 360, Carroll said-

"I think potentially you will. I think early on people are going to be struggling to figure out exactly how to make the PS3 work. But I think once they do they will see it's a very powerful system underneath."

Sorry. That's what I meant. They are calling it crysis 1.5 in some circles. They hired several PS3 programmers last year - they had the jobs up on their board.

ps3 crysis -

http://kotaku.com/346247/en...

Rumors that Crysis will be coming to consoles just won't stop, which is probably a good thing for developer Crytek. Good to know that people want to play your game, especially the folks who consider a $900 PC too rich for their blood and are hungry for content. The folks dredging up the PlayStation 3 Crysis port this time are PlayStation World UK, by way of GamesRadar.

We know that the company was on the hunt for a PS3 know-it-all in the Spring of last year, but the Crytek folks have been mum since. They probably didn't want any thunder stolen from the PC version, we're guessing.

PlayStation World now says that they're hearing the PS3 version of the very pretty shooter will come packed with extras, dubbing it Crysis 1.5. But what about that rumored Xbox 360 version, listed by certain retailers? The mag puts a damper on that possibility, claiming "technical reasons." Oh really? We're staying out of that one.

Consider it rumor, but given that Crytek hasn't exactly denied such a thing exists, even saying it's "possible", we're keeping our fingers crossed that they'll announce something soon.

hey somethin differnt, look here

http://www.gamasutra.com/ph...

http://www.gamespot.com/new...

"Sony has signed licensing agreements with two of the leading developer middleware providers, Havok and Ageia. Based in Dublin, Ireland, and San Francisco, Havok has seen its physics engine used in Max Payne 2 and Half-Life 2. The agreement will let Sony include a "Havok Complete" middleware suite in its PS3 development kit, which will come with an optimized physics engine, animation engine, and other tools, including linkers and debuggers.

Ageia, based in California, is a developer of physics tools and hardware and is best known for its Ageia PhysX physics library, also known as NovodeX. According to Sony, the PhysX's multithreaded capability makes it ideal to leverage the power of the Cell. Sony's licensing agreement with Ageia will allow a PhysX optimized for the PS3 to be included in the third-party publisher software development kits (SDKs). "

Thta kills it. MS was only trying to catch up and get the same deal as Sony.

To me, Psi-Ops had the best physics of the bunch.

Havok isn't the only physics solution.

I don't see this happening anyway. Havok licenses their tech to companies like EA who make games for all three consoles and PCs. Why would they give up contracts like that just to enter into some exclusivity deal with MS?

Physic engines are a dime a dozen. This means nothing. If these people honestly beleive Sony isn't working on or with companies to bring a newer more powerful physics engine then they really need to stop what their doing and read up on reality a bit more.

Sony isn't affected by this news. It's like they are trying to make news out of nothing that's what's so funny. Microsoft has games on their system right now that use Havok tools.

It's like the guy is implying just because a new deal was made Killzone 2 and other havok based Ps3 games will go to the xbox 360 ahahahhahahaah.

Havok are a middle-ware company.

They sell their physics engine to all comers, its the fundamental cornerstone of their business.

If MS have paid a substantial amount, it will be for all the first party devs to use engine in all their titles, rather than the title by title payment that normally occurs.

This speculative article is obviously very uninformed. A company does not stop trading simply because it has one large contract

This is obviously not true because it would be the worst business move ever. Look at it this way.

Lets say Ubisoft decides to make Assassin's Creed 2 for PS3/360. Well they can't use the Havoc Physics Engine on both platforms because of Microsoft's exclusive contract.

Instead of implementing a different physics engines for each version and doubling their workload in the process, they are just going to avoid that bull**** and use the AGEIA PhysX Engine (or some other 3rd party engine) instead.

Every other multiplatform developer out there who uses Havoc would also switch to Ageia for this reason.

I knew Havok was big time but from this it seems; like they said! "A Master Stroke" if this comes to pass.

Other solutions or not isn't Havok a big time universal multi platform provider with advanced physics technoligy(old/last-gen *or* seasoned-unmatched)

15 - What is with the BLOGS being posted as news!
Poorly written BLOG, if researched, you'll find that...

Microsoft has signed a "perpetual licensing agreement" that will make the Havok physics engines available to Microsoft Game Studios and its development partners.

This does not mean Sony PS3 developers won't be able to implement Havok tech in their games.

Again, I'm getting sick of these no-name sites shoving garbage in my face.

PS: Intel owns Havok, Nvidia owns PhysX. Each company distributes their multitudes of software to any developer willing to implement the technology. Microsoft just signed an agreement that basically gives Havok tools away to any developer making an Xbox 360 game. If this is a blow to anyone, its a blow to Nvidia with PhysX.

Perhaps reading the article would put you in a better place to comment upon it. It is an article discussing the implications of the exclusivity battle moving away from titles alone and into the software that makes them. You would know that though, having read it. It's a valid discussion point, formed from observing the aim of each console manufacturer to produce more unique content. Hence it being an article, and not news. Don't just read the sections of the story posted here, read the full article. Then if you cannot comprehend the question marks at the end of sentences, ask a few questions. or better yet, get the point and make some intelligent observations on topic.

15.3 - I did read the article
And agree with SolidShank.

The author is trying to use a "perpetual license" as a way of saying since Sony and 3rd party devs don't have perpetual licenses, this is somehow going to allow MS to make a move in the future to grab exclusivity.
"Has this left the door open for future exclusivity? It surely gives Microsoft an advantage when negotiating with developers to produce titles for their platforms."
No, the deal is just for Microsoft first party studios. If Havok had any shred of intelligence the license wouldn't be transferable to 3rd party companies that produce MS exclusives.

I think the whole thing kind of depends on your views of whether or not there will be a better 3rd party physics engine soon. MS doesn't believe that, so they shelled out a bunch of money so they can add Havok to their games (probably to XBL games too). If they believed another engine was going to come out in the near-ish future, they would have continued to license on a per-game basis. Other developers could believe there's something around the corner, so they're continuing to license per game. That way, they won't waste a bunch of money with a perpetual license if they're rarely going to use the Havok engine after that.

Either that or the other developers just haven't finished negotiations for a perpetual license yet.
