Metal Gear Solid 4 Thrown In For Free

Kotaku writes: "Previously, we brought word that Metal Gear Solid 4 appeared to be hitting the bargain bin - a mere month and a half after the game was released. (A shame, because it is a great game, even if it hasn't sold close to million copies in Japan!) Now it seems the Metal Gear Solid 4 40GB PS3 bundle's price is getting slashed at Akihabara retailer Gamers. (No clue about the gajillion other shops in Japan!) The price has been lowered from ¥49,800 (US$454) to ¥39,800 ($363) for a store sale - meaning that it's going for about what regular 40GB PS3s fetch without the game. That's right, Metal Gear Solid 4 for free.

the Japanese are biased against Western games and systems. The one time the West has a chance to sell them a system that's powerful, has a good catalog of games, and an online interface that's unparalleled is the time the system has hardware problems galore. Now I don't know if the Japanese are avoiding the 360 out of some bias against Western game companies or if it's just being a smart consumer and avoiding a system with hardware problems galore.

I think people are missing the point, it is not about the 360 vs. the PS3 in this case. It is about how a big game like MGS4 (bundle) in Japan is discounted a mere 1.5 months after release.

Why do people hear that the PS3 is in negative light today so I must compare that to the 360.... Ever consider that the author is just pointing out facts?

I must admit that the headline isn't the most representative though.

Not only is the article dumb, but they don't seem to know that MGS4 put up very good numbers in a country where the series isn't even that possible. They also forget that the PS3 install base is still only a couple million over there. It's not like the PS2 yet where practically everyone owns one over there.

I've seen stores selling the 360 with Halo 3 for free more than once in the USA and in Europe (on launch week/month). It is a friggin bonus. Hell... if I go NOW to the mall next to my house they are probably still there, it is a SALE, stores do that to SELL MORE, its a business practice.

Sony already sold 4 million copies of MGS4 anyways without the 80GB PS3 Bundles so they are doing well considering right now PS3 has a small install base.
Trust me once they release the new 80GB PS3 this August and put it in bundles w/ the price drop expect it to sell a lot.
$400 for a 80GB PS3 MGS4 Bundle.
$400 for the 80GB PS3.
Even w/ the 360's price drop that's only a $100 difference.
If you spend that extra $100 you get full 1080P gaming, free online, blu-ray player, Qore, Home, amazing PS3 Line ups both 1st & 3rd party, and the great multiplatform games which are now looking better on the PS3 or the same as the 360.
I'm just saying MS might not sell as much as you think w/ it's price drop.
360's had price drops before in Europe but it didn't make any difference the PS3 sold more because it's a quality product that's reliable and has the best games.
The price drop might make some impact in America but worldwide it's not really going to make a difference.
Also like I said only a $100 price difference now.
