This is an unfair way of gauging the greatness of a console. The more popular the console is, the more shovelware people will put on it because it reaches the biggest audience. So the better a console is, the more low scoring games there will be to bring down its metascore.

I agree that the N64 was a phenomenal machine.

But the guy is rating games not the "actual" consoles.

A console may be a rubbish piece of hardware but have decent games developed for it.
And another console may be the ultimate in tech but have no games.

This guy isn't stating the best console, but the best console for games.

360 & PS3 - Call of Duty 4, MGS4, Halo 3, GTA4

Wii - Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii.

It's well researched but the thesis is flawed. The median game is not the best way of determining which system is best because no one buys all the games a system has. So systems with the biggest libraries (such as the PS2 and 360) ended up with lower scores. I doubt anyone would argue the Gamecube was a better system than the PS2.

Worst of all, the results aren't that different. Does it really matter whose median score is 2 points higher than the other?

So according to this pearl of wisdom, the N64 was the best console ever and the Wii is, at least so far, the worst?

Sorry, but no, the N64 was largely crap and I feel not the least bit ashamed in saying that at least half or more of the games that got RAVE reviews on the 64 were not that great and were, in fact, based in large part on the ramblings of a few sad and angry people who wanted to believe in Nintendo because they had romantic notions about them based on previous experiences.

The prime example of this was Ocarina of Time, a good game to be sure, but a far cry from the 'gift from god' it's made up to be. In many people minds there needed to be 'something' that justified the N64 in a market where Sony was basically running away with the ball.

A much better way to judge a system is to look at the sheer number of good to excellent games that you can play on that system. Your system might have the best games 'if you average all the games' but that doesn't mean much if your system has 10-20 great titles and another system has 50-100 great titles.

Ocarina of Time is one of the best games ever. I realize that's just an opinion, but it is one that many people share.

I also think the N64 was one of the greatest consoles. In fact, it was probably the last Nintendo console that I really used often (the Gamecube I use for Wind Waker, and the Wii I don't own). I mean it has a ton of great games like Goldeneye, both Zelda's, Perfect Dark, Mario 64, etc.

The N64 may have had a lot of crap titles too, but so does the Wii. You aren't really using the same scale to judge them. I don't doubt that this article is extremely flawed, but its just a weird way to compare the consoles and their games (especially since the 360, PS3, and Wii aren't half way through their cycle yet). It means absolutely nothing.

It really just comes down to personal preference and experience. I would rank the PS2 as the best console in that list (SNES/NES aren't their) but that's just because the games I played on that console where some of the best I've ever played.

Just find out which system has the most titles that scored above 70 average. Or whichever number you want to judge by.

If you want the BEST of the best games, then see which system has the most titles that scored above 90 average.

But in the end, you won't necessarily agree with the average scores of any given game anyways.

blu-ray makes for better games, ps3 games have more action, enemys and dynamics on screen than 360 games cause the 360 hardware cant handle all that and it makes ps3 games truthfully better. (fact) due to the cell processor.

the ps3 hasn't even been out for 2 years yet and look how quickly its catching up in sales, features, games and online.

ps3 is out selling 360 WW everywhere and surpassed them in EU despite a year and 3 moths head start by 360 in EU. that tells alot about how this generation will end.

everything i mentioned is already here. i didnt mention things that are coming. (and theirs alot of stuff coming) but these are just some of the things thats available as of now.

360:

-it breaks alot multiple times (fact)
-the better games are found on PC (fact) so you dont really need a 360 ya know.
-expensive upgradeable HD thats maxed out at 120gigs (fact)
-no built in wifi (fact)
-not all 360s have HDMI built in, if they do its HDMI 1.2 and inferior to ps3's (fact)
-no blu-ray anything (fact)
-out dated DVD9 (fact)
-loud noisy console (fact)
-charge you to play games online (fact) although it has a lil more features than PSN
-non analogue buttons on controller (fact)
- out of proportion controller (fact) its comfortable though : )
- inferior hardware compared to ps3 (fact)
- has ALMOST reached its limits (fact)
- no internet browser built in (fact)
-have to pay for themes and cant make your own themes for free (fact)

multiplats are a thing in the past and the only ones that made a difference were madden and orange box. the rest doesnt really matter to anyone unless they were side by side.

the ps3 is the future ladies and gentalmen, the future is here, the future is now.

games is an opinion, and so is preference. i prefer the ps3 ; ) im a smart consumer.

How many of those games are really exclusive read not on PC? AND HOW MANY ARE XBLA TITLES?

3 games have trophies at the minute, not all games have 5gb installs (Uncharted, COD 4, Bad Company for example)
Final Fantasy XIII Verses is a PS3 exclusive, PS3 games do have voice chat stop being ignorant.

the N64 is the only console i still play today (goldeneye, mario kart, banjo mario 64, zelda ocarina of time, ect...) those where, in fact, the good days of gaming. when games were more about gaming than graphics. Nowaday people argue about witch game looks better than the other one and on witch console, but never talk about gameplay. it's like fast food gaming, once you finish a game, it's on to the next one. games have very short lifespan.
