Media Molecule Miffed By David Reeves "Itunes Meets Ebay" LBP Comment
38
Ripten's Chad Lakkis writes:
"Media Molecule, developers of the upcoming LittleBigPlanet game, apparently receiving 'not-so-nice' emails from fans who read the comments David Reeves (President of SCEE) made to PS3fanboy, stating that LBP would "eventually" allow community content creators to charge other gamers for the content they create.
MM responded calling the comments 'hot air' and stating that it was 'merely a case of ye-olde-internet-crossed wires'. Below is the post directly from Media Molecule's official blog."

This article is not a knock on MM or LBP, but it does show that MM is not very happy with the Pres of SCEE for making the comments he made.

1.4 - Sony should be more careful...
MM is a third party developer based in Guilford, Surrey that is owned and operated by former Lionhead staff, with the respective studios just down the road from one another.
The MM ties to Lionhead, MS and Molyneux are pretty damn thick, so Sony really ought to be more careful or buy the bloody studio already. ;)

He is just one person that works for Sony and should not be paid much attention to. He may head SCEE but he has always been known to be a blowhard.

Seems like charging for the content is in the plans, when exactly MM and Sony decide to kick that plan into action is not known.
I don't believe the pres of SCEE would just make those kinds of comments blindly. I think that the backlash from fans was something MM felt they had to address publicly.

I completely disagree with what they want to do. Allowing users to charge will only lead to people making money off of the smallest things and then when people create amazing works of art, they'll charge upwards of 5 bucks to use it. Its essentially passing-the-buck on microtransactions.

5.1 - You dont understand
What they are planning on doing is looking through the community after its been up and running for a while and picking the elite and very best content creators and effectivly making them part of the team by allowing them to charge for their amazing levels. This isnt something that means any random player can slap a charge onto their level, there will still be thousands of free levels constantly, and plenty of great ones from people MM havent found yet, or didnt pick. I think you mistakingly thought abilty to charge was just a box to tick after making your map.

the fact that few will be picked, and people are picked based from consitstantly great levels will mean a higher amount of amazing free content will become available as people battle for media molocules attention.

Sony is publishing LittleBigPlanet and there's NO chance of LBP coming to the 360. If Final Fantasy XIII was published by Sony, it wouldn't be coming to the Xbox 360.

He seems more pissed of angry fanboys than Sony's announcement. We can understand them, being flooded by comments or mails saying "DON'T CHARGE IT U DUMBASSES OR I KILL MYSELF" is not really fun, no matter how nice and pacifist you can be.

When are you people going to learn that Media Molecule is a respectable developer???!!!
Phil Harrison did everything he could to hire these guys on because he saw potential that wasn't being fully utilized. If only SCEJ and SCEA had believed him about social gaming, Sony would still be on top.

So instead of charing other gamer real money, why not come up with virtual point that only received by LBP related contribution? if they really allow community creator to charge real money...well don't buy it if you don't wanna. Its not like mandatory update but more individual map pack.
BTW I agree with post@5.1 idea. LBP do seem like a good ground to find creative recruit.

15 - Whoever submitted this article should have read it first.
Nowhere does Media Molecule's statement state, nor imply, that they are "pissed off." They simply said not to worry since all the user-submitted content is going to be free. Reeves was simply sharing well-known plans for the future, which is to reward the highly talented level makers who will eventually come to fruition.
