Pitchford on Home: 'Shouldn't we have it already?'

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford has expressed concern over the PS3's Second Life style online world Home, fearing Sony is making it too complicated.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at E3 last week, Pitchford, who is responsible for upcoming multiplatform first-person shooters Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Borderlands, said that he doesn't understand why Home hasn't already been released and called on Sony to make it very simple and quick when it is eventually launched.

When asked what he thought about Home, Pitchford replied: "That's neat. I want to play with it. It's kind of weird. I don't understand why I don't have it yet. Shouldn't we have had it already? When did we first hear about it? A year and a half ago? What's the deal? I think they're trying to bite off a lot there and make it really really complicated and I agree with some of the intent behind it, but we need a very simple, quick way to do what they're offering."

While I tend to agree, it's an easy remark to make. Shouldn't we have Brothers in Arms yet? Borderlands yet? No, because Gearbox wont compromise on quality and nor should Sony.

No one should compromise on quality, but it's one thing to take a long time to create a great product and another thing to take a long time to under-deliver or include too many things that people don't want or care about. We know almost nothing about why they're holding off for release, and in the end it might mean nothing in the long run.

Keyword: "MIGHT". I am not condemning Home at all. While I have no doubt Home is going to be a wonderful experience, it just seems like we're waiting too long on what's supposed to be a virtual social interaction product.

What Sony should do is release it as is, then start taking suggestions as to how it should expand. Pitchford is right in saying they may be biting off more than they can chew.

FF - That's a good point, but the key difference is a game is meant as a one time release. With Home, Sony can get something out there and build it with updates as time goes by. The updates will energize people's interest too. I don't mean if there are bugs or quality issues to release it anyway, that would have a negative impact. Get a solid starting point and let people in, then build it up and up.

"a game is meant as a one time release" While that is true, in real life scenarios how many games are released without the need for patches or updates? And how much moaning do we have to go through while waiting on that.

I have played with Home myself, I know someone who was lucky enough to be a beta tester, and here is the thing, it's far from ready, releasing now would cause nothing bu more hate and moaning.

It's funny, the people who demand Home to soon are the ones who haven't had hands-on experience, yet the beta testers all but agree there's a ways to go before it's ready for the masses.

Do we really want another 2.40 again? I'll take it when it's ready, when it's functional.

I know the wait is a pain in the ass, but it will be worth it in the end.

1.5 - Maybe....
Sony wouldn't have this problem if they hadn't jumped the gun and announced HOME till they actually had some of it under wraps already. Same as with KillZone and with countless other products.

There great products in all, but they shouldn't leave sooooo much time in between announcements and release dates. It's one thing to keep them waiting, but they take it to a point where it's ridiculous!!

@1

I completely agree with you. I've known about Brother's in Arms, and Boarderlands for almost 2 years now, and still nothing new. At least there have been plenty of trailer of home.

Shouldn't we have it already - This type of thinking results in bad quality stuff. I won't even mention examples. We just know it does. Getting bad press for delays are 100x better than getting bad press for faulty product.

I don't agree. We would all play defunct consoles and have to patch every game if people just released **** and let the public decide.

I have a belief in Sony because they have never let me down.

I just got a PS3 for christ and I am huge gamer.

Is that a new religious movement?

... sorry I'm just teasing, bubbles for the inadvertant chuckle.

I think Jack T. showed us some insight on the delays by saying they were a bit naive in the beginning when designing Home. I could take that one of two ways: Either they underestimated the workload required and found they were woefully understaffed and were scrambling to get the work done or they envisioned way too much and found their ideas were too pie in the sky and are now trying to come back down to earth with something workable.

7 - Sony may have a small team on Home.
My guess is that the delays are due to lack of resources. Sony never planned on investing in online, and they are struggling with the losses on the hardware. Sony thrives on putting carrots in front of horses mouths. All that matters is the mystery of Home, not the reality.

I'm in the Beta, and my opinion is that it's far enough along that they could launch it, with the idea that it will be updated much like the ps3 itself. It's getting to a point like, someone looking to buy a computer. They say i'm going to wait a few months so its cheaper, well you can always say that, cause it will always be cheaper in a few months. But, its just my opinion based on my time with HOME thus far.

SONY should release it when ATLEAST 3 major games support HOME. (let see Uncharted, Warhawk and Bioshock). Hmmm.

Well thats 3. Time to hit the Launch button.

11 - They've been doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work.
In reducing the bandwidth requirements of this application, speeding up load times, etc. Plus the graphics and lifelike animations are just incredible now.

It's coming out this fall as a public beta, so I don't mind how much work they're putting into it.

Yes we should have it already and its very lame that we do not. But since it is free we will have to wait. I look forward to seeing what took so much work.
