BBC: Was the Exclusive PS3 Mystery Game Revealed At E3? Nope, And Its Not MAG

BBC Darren writes:

"A reader of the blog - Kyle Barrett - has emailed to ask if a mystery game I had teased people with a few months ago had finally been revealed at Sony's E3 press conference.

If the footage I was shown truly is "in game", as told to me by the Sony PR people, then we could be on the brink of a step change in what games consoles are capable of in terms of story-telling and immersion."

I honestly would rather NOT be told until maybe half a year before the game's release.

I'm sick of this current game of waiting 2 or 3 years before a game comes out. Waiting through delay after delay because they really shouldn't bother revealing release dates in the first place.

This being made worse by waiting for games that eventually get canceled because the developers can't handle it or there's some sudden change in the company's strategy (Ahem...thanks for COMPLETELY SCRAPPING "Eight Days" and "The Getaway" SCEE! Changing your strategy shouldn't mean killing games already announced and in development. People are already waiting for those games).

I appreciate that something wicked this way comes. But I don't care to know what it is until the wait for said game is at a more reasonable length.

I think Sony made the mistake of showing Home and LBP too early but back last year, Sony was really in bad shape so they were 'forced' to show things they weren't really close to release yet, so that angered some ppl. So this time, they are smart about it I think.

You're right - but they've probably also shown GOW3 and MAG too soon, I mean, they're both not coming out until late 2009, right? If they'd announced them at E3 next year it would have had a bigger impact IMO but they needed something to counter the FFXIII announcement.

i think its a double edge. They showed teasers so that should indicate that its nowhere near ready but informing us of its existence at the same time. Had they not show anything to do with MAG now then MS, who may have a similar product in the works, may show their version of MAG first. Now we know its coming and what the targets are its safe to say that anything that gets announced hereafter by anybody else is just copying full stop.

by 'MS's version of MAG' I mean a similar type of game 200 plus players in realtime warfare. Another console industry 1st.

Third person is not a genre, it's just a perspective of the game... Really, saying it can be third person is like guessing that the sky will be blue today when it's 12am and you con't see a cloud.

Third person could be Ico, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, Little Big Planet (but for oldschool gameplay platformers we use the world "sidescrollers") and what not...

Unfair guess man.

I would love it to be some adventure or some hack and slash action. But actually I'll be satisfied with Heavy Rain (if as good as Indigo Prophecy) and GoW3, so I really want to be surprised this time, specially with this kind of hype about a storytelling and immersion, I'll be not that much surprised if those guys come up with something we'll need a new genre to classify it.

IMO, I think Sony made an excellent decision to not show Heavy Rain and any other major project they have in development because, If you look at Microsoft, they didn't really announce any new game except FXIII coming to the Xbox 360. Sony had announced at least one game for PS3, 3 for PSP, and PS2 is still delivering.

If they had shown those games, it would have sent of the wrong message that, they did that in reply to the FXIII announcement which will mean, they were shook by it. One thing about business is to NEVER show your opponent that, he surprised you.

EVERY game, until it's released to the public is a mystery game, so there is no mystery game as such or they all are, either way, get a life and stop making sh1t up.

Sometimes devs don't release game info until a game is far along b/c there not even sure it's doable or if there will even be a publisher for it. So seriously, cool your jets, there is no magical mystery game as you wanting to believe.

Another FPS to be sure. And with Sony's recent success at coining highly innovative and original game names such as "MAG - MASSIVE ACTION GAME" I am hopeful this new FPS will still be typical, bland and allow us to run, jump, flip some switches and play as guns. Lots of guns and I hope Sony goes with the stylish name "SHOOTER" for it.

Lets face it, all FPS should simply be called "SHOOTER" cause they suck. All of them but maybe 3 a year. That's all we need. 3 a year. 3 really good ones and the rest can make way for other games that have potential to be good.

Just a thought Sony. And the worst part about all this is simply the fact Sony is trying to push so many FPS on the ps3 that they hope they get lucky with the 1 Halo killer by chance. Toss 52 FPS at your system in under 2 years and see if we get lucky.
