1 - I invite discussion to my comment below:
Is the PS3 destined to remain third?
360 to ps3 sales gap is 45000 this week

Good job ps3. (or is it?)

Outselling the 360 worldwide is something that SONY really needs right now.
If I am not mistaken, the ps3 has been outselling the 360 in the steady average range of 25-45k per week for most of 2008 now.

However, despite all SDF fantasy, the trend has NOT accelerated in the last 6 months, nor has the 360 slowed significantly.
Please check the numbers.

The PS3 is catching the 360 - there is no doubt - BUT will it be enough?

Sales gap is now 20mill-14mill= 6 mill.

at 30-45000 units per week extra, it will take the ps3 until AT LEAST
July 2011 to catch up..
Too little too late?
What do you think?
(Don't forget these figures are now also post MGS4.)

The imminent 360 price drop will not likely help the ps3 situation either.

1.1 - Ok....
First it is VGcharts not most reliable but with that out of the way........
It seems that the Ps3 is catching but not at an alarming speed. I strongly believe by mid 2009 to early 2010 it will be small margin between Ps3 and 360. It is a strange thing when you talk about sales per week. some weeks they are higher than average and there is no reason why. Sales will most likely stay like this for ever now. Ps3 2nd and 360 last. Once sony drops ps2 support it will change alot. Ps3 sales will pick up and Japan may begin purchase when price drops. No-one can predict the futute in sales but it definitely better than last year!

1.2 - So you posted the same comment in both zones?
Weird... But yeah, I helped Sony this week by trading in my Wii for a PS3(Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle). They sold more than 360s yet again...

But 360 sold more hardware, which is where the money is made. I think they lose money on the consoles themselves and gain money on the games. Sony need more games like MGS4(amazing game) to increase software sales as well as hardware.

It's funny how I don't even include the Wii. I just don't think of it as a real gaming system anymore. I used to be a huge Nintendo fanboy, but they really let me down with the Wii.

1.3 - There's two things wrong with your comparison.
1). You're relying on VG Chartz.

2). You're comparing Microsoft's "Shipment" figures to Sony's "Sold to Customer" figures. And console makers like to keep a 1~1.5 million hardware buffer in the event of a sales spike, like what we see during the Holidays or a big game launch.

1. The gap has supposedly been at 5-6 million for months now, despite the PS3 outselling the 360 everywhere all year.
2. Check the numbers for when a big exclusive comes out.
3. Check the numbers from Nov-Dec every year.
4. Compare year to year, not month to month

<Yawn>

Haha Sony is only outselling the 360 by 40,000 a month.

Just shh on the fact that the 360 can be purchased for less than the cost of a wii. And they still cant sell them. Go MS!!! Sales FTW!!!!

It's VGchartz and it's wrong. Microsoft's Greenberg already stated back in MAY that the difference was at 5 million consoles.
Greeneberg: "Today Xbox 360 has a 5-million-unit console sales lead on a global basis based on most recently public reported data from both companies." And the source:
http://www.destructoid.com/...
Since then PS3 continues to outsell X360 worldwide (even in the US) so the difference is less then five million right now, and with the NPD numbers out for June where x360 is down 200K only in the US, then probably is around or even under 4 million right now.

If you want to take these figures as your base, PS3 sold 50% more than 360 for this month, and that is a significant percentage.

MS announced at E3 that the hardware lead the 360 enjoys is about 5 million machines, so we'll use that figure since its direct from MS themselves.

Simply extrapolating this extra sales figure would mean the PS3 only sells about 1.3 million units more till the end of the year.

BUT, this figure is from a relatively quite week traditionally in terms of hardware units to be sold. If the percentage difference is maintained through the weeks of heavy machine slaes and major new games, we can assume the PS3 will sell at leat 2.5 million units more tthorugh till december, cutting the install base advantage down to 2.5 million.

Its already established despite the bickering over figures that if PS3 doesn't already have a signifiucant advantage in Europe, then it soon will. No one can dispute that. We all know the situation in Japan where the 360 remains a dead machine. The US is the great territiry for the machine where it still enjoys a significat install base advantage, but its surely becoming clear to even the most die hard fans that this will change and I'd expect the PS3 to surpass 360 install base worldwide sometime around now next year.

I like how people only use math to caculate the numbers because it just shows how dumb they are.

Just going by the trend the 360 had a 10 million unit lead and now it's down to 5 million. The gap is closing the PS3 is not at its prime yet and the 360 has already been at its prime is starting to decline after this year. There is no question that the PS3 will have the lead by 2009.

1.12 - This holiday season it is going to be VERY important
for Sony and MS... Both will move a lot of units, but this is the time that Sony needs to make its move. If the millions of PS2 owners don't make the jump over to the PS3 this holiday, then Sony will have a much tougher time closing the gap.

It's sold more than that. It sold those numbers reportedly on it's first day -_- If you remember it was 1 million in europe, almost 1 million in us and around 400,000? I think in japan.

^yup

I think people on here tend to mistake weeks for months. Theres a little over 4 weeks in a month, so if a console outsells another about 40K to 60K 4 times a month thats around 200,000 each month on average. But then you gotta calculate the big releases such MGS which sold out all the bundles in a lot of places. By the end of the year one system outsold another by 2,400,000 (if they do it every month like the ps3 so far) just looking at the average and not including big releases.

it will catch up when it does. At the mean time, Gimme killzone 2 sony freaks. I want that game so bad and gt5 full version too. I spent over 400 to play gt5 prologue counting wheel g25 and building setup for wheel and pedals.

7 - Use your head karlostomy!!!
Now, I'm not going to get into an argument about the reliability of vgchartz compared to NPD, but I just want to leave everyone with this thought. Vgchartz has Sony outselling Microsoft by roughly 50,000 units for North America in 2008, while NPD has Sony outselling Microsoft by about 267,000 units in North America. I'm not here to debate which set of numbers are more accurate, but I just thought I would share that with everyone =)

Also, what kind of crackpot mathematics are you using Karlos? Even going by Vgchartz world wide numbers for 2008 Sony has managed to close the gap from 6.9 million units, to 5.5. This indicates that the Playstation 3 has outsold the 360 by more than 1.4 million units for the first six months of 2008.

Now, I realize that this year is far from over, but when taking into account that at this exact same time last year the Playstation had outsold the 360 by 200,000 units world wide, you have to admit that is a huge increase year over year for Sony. However, this year will truly be decided by what happing in its last 3 months sales wise so unless Microsoft can make up a growing sales deficit for the year of 2008 they will be outsold this year by Sony.

7.1 - Lol...
Yes, it is a huge increase over same time last year, but if you read my comment carefully you will note that I said in the last *6 months*.

Fact is, in the last 6 months the trend for ps3 has NOT accelerated or increased exponentially like so many people want to believe.
Just check the numbers again dude.

the sales gap is probably closer to 6 million, not 5.5 million.
the average sales gap is 25-45000 per week.
Do the maths again.

Nintendo has find the good "quatuor" : Wii fit, Mario Kart wii, SSBB, and wii play, this games sell the same amount every weeks again and again. This games are console's sellers.
Good things MSG4 sells more than 2 millions but with the probably high cost for producing the game, there is good chance we will see it coming on the xbox360. And more it will be stupid for konami not putting it.
Even if this chart are estimation, it shows a trend that wii sell a lot of games, at least more than the others two and without big game coming out.

I can't believe people are so stupid, to the guy with the 1st comment.

November and December sales always account for more than half of the hardware sales for that year.

It was a 10 million lead before, now it's a 5 million lead. By 2009 PS3 will be ahead easily.

Topshelfcheese - 520 days 15 hours ago

I don't see why it ever has to be ahead, the fact is it launched a whole year later, if you reset sales of xbox to zero when the PS3 launched than the PS3 has already outsold it.

I just don't see why everyone thinks that just cause it hasn't made up a 7million unit head start, that its somehow a failure. Use some common sense.

Bottom line, none of the consoles are going anywhere, even if or when Sony passes MS, its not going to change anything. MS will still make the next xbox and sony will still make the PS4, just enjoy whatever system or systems you like.

15 - I want to know this
I own all three systems and to me I do not care which console is in first, second or third place. Will it make a difference if Sony does overtake 360 for second place... No. The reason for this is third party games will just about release on every system. To all that think the one year headstart 360 had was for nothing, you my friend are wrong. What that one year head start did was get the system into over 10 million homes. I can see if the system did not sell well then it would be for nothing. All I have to say is I am looking forward to KZ2, R2, GeOW2, Fable 2 and any other "GAMES" that out for "BOTH" consoles.

People Play games not systems.
