Square Enix: FF XIII Going Multi Is Turning Point

Many in the industry have viewed the announcement that Square Enix's Final Fantasy XIII will go multi-platform - appearing on the Xbox 360 as well as the PlayStation 3 in the West - as a crucial apex in the game hardware wars.

It was Sony's last presumed big third-party published exclusive for PlayStation 3, and the day and date Xbox 360 release in North America and Europe has dealt the PlayStation 3 platform a major blow in terms of Sony-only titles.

Therefore, Gamasutra asked Square Enix senior vice president of sales and marketing Shinji Hashimoto whether he felt that the announcement was, of sorts, a turning point for the game industry.

LOL!

The 360's major news is Microsoft throwing giant wads of cash at Square to get a six month to year delayed port of one game for their console that won't arrive for two years at the earliest.

1.1 - Well, of course it is a turning point..
However, will it be worth the effort? For SE, I dont think it will be much profitable. Many FF fans eagerly waiting to buy FFXIII would have either bought a PS3 or already have owned one. Now, since 360 is also getting it, PS3 wont be getting as big a bump in sales as expected (but there still will be an impact). However, the software sales will probably be evenly distributed among the platforms (3:2, anyone?) and will not be any greater than it should be.

The only question now would be "Who can attract more of the Wii casual gamers?"

If FF13 is still one to two years off, there are still a ****ton of PS3 exclusives coming out between now and it's release.

I truly believe LittleBigPlanet will be a MAJOR system seller. Not to mention many other exclusive games that will be released.

I can see the PS3's sales flying by the 360's numbers easily before FF13 even launches in Japan.

So I don't see why this is such a huge bonus for 360. If this game was coming out soon then yes it would have been, but as far as I'm concerned, it's too late.

It's a last ditch effort on MS's part to try and stave off the torrent of kick ass games coming out for the PS3.

MS has... Fable 2... uhh... Gears?... oh wait both will Hit PC too... So uuhh...

Microsoft's big annoucement was a multiplatform game where as Sony annouces two brand new exclusives coming in 2009. Yep I see a turning point in Sony's favor.

1.7 - yeah
the question is, when will FFXIII come out? they haven't even started with the 360 yet and hell they haven't even finished their highest priority at the moment, which is the japanese PS3 version! after they released it 'exclusively' for PS3 in japan, then they'll start the localization for PS3 and porting for 360! ok, maybe they'll start doing that once the japanese version gone gold but still, I don't think it will be a month or 2 job! thanks to that, the PS3 owners will also have to wait! (what a nice way to treat the fans!)

so, I'm betting M$ will announce their new console before FFXIII even released!

I think that maybe you should actually read the article before throwing a tantrum.

Square-Enix's words...not mine:

""But now each console has many users, so this has kind of dictated the way that Final Fantasy will evolve in the future, and why it's being released on multiple consoles at once."

Last generation the PS2 dominated both the Gamecube and the Xbox in total install base. That is why PS2 had so many exclusives. With the PS3 install base being in 3rd as of now. Square-Enix can't ignore the amount of profit they will make off of a 360 release of FF 13.

Not to mention that the 360 sells a ton of software. There was never any loyalty to Sony from Square-Enix, it was just bc the PS2 had most of the market share last generation. Before Sony Square made games for Nintendo. 3rd parties have no loyalty to anybody unless they are under an exclusive contract.

Sqare-Enix has released more games on DS and Wii than both the 360 and PS3 combined.

"Not to mention that the 360 sells more software than the Wii and PS3 combined"

And where did you pull that little pearl of wisdom from? If it's attach rates then it is not a fair argument, having been on the market for a much longer time it's common sense to expect a higher attach rate.

3.2 - whats up bloodmask , yea i couldnt care less about FF13
like around 50% of ff sales are in japan. 360 version not coming to japan.

its timed exclusive to ps3 for almost a year.

FF vs. 13 is still exclusive and it completes the franchise.

sony has a small share in square enix.

these are the reasons why it will not hurt sony that much, it will still move ps3's (maybe not as much) but not that much less than it would have if it were still exclusive. i dont think the 360 version will sell as much as the ps3 version.

I believe most people felt upset aren't because how Sony will suffer, but what SE said and did...

SE kept saying FF13 is exclusive title for years, then suddenly go multi-platform on E3.

SE then said the game world is changed and thus multi-platform serve more audiences, but still they kept other console game exclusive.

Despite SE now pretty much dis PS3 completely. Sony won't go down b/c of this, they do have quit good exclusive coming up.

oh god, i try hard at times to be neutral but this is getting ridiculous! Square needs to check the NPD numbers because apparantly from what i read they think install base>sales... ever stop to think that the majority of 360 numbers are/were do to failure issues and what not?(not a pro with hardware so bare with me) i mean i understand about them trying to cater to their western audience, but when was the last time you heard a JRPG on 360 sell all that well? idk its my opinion and im confused sum 1 explain

Even if they sell 3OOk ff13 on X360, it still 300k for them, no need to sell 1M.
If developpers are forced to make multiplatform game, it's sony, microsoft, and nintendo (a little less than the first two) because they make console which are too powerful, so the cost of the game are on the rise.
Don't put the blame on the developpers.

alright thank you, i was just so jelous of 360 owners, i mean yeah PS3 gets all these games like LBP and co, but i want some RPGs too, and the way they are taking things isnt fair because yeah 360 is getting all these exclusive RPGs, but then we have Square giving PS3 owners White Knight Chronicles(cant wait xD) and some others i cant remember, Then we finally get 2 big exclusives(one gone), but you know what i shouldnt be bitter about it because XIII isnt exclusive 2 360 + we get Versus so im grateful xD

Not a bad idea. Im actually glad that FF13 will have 2 install bases to feed off of. As an FF fan I want to see it break sales records and recieve Critical Acclaim. I was bitter at first though because I thought they might scale back the size and scope of the game. In the end though I think it will be aight.

What a beautiful words from SE~

Simply translate: we just want more money, but we gonna kept exclusive game for X360 so we also think "single platform doesn't necessarily limit the market".

BTW, anyone notice when SE VP mention good performance on exclusive game, he exclude PS3?

It is only time for SE to announce FFversus13 coming to X360...

Funny that's said when it's going from PS3 to 360, but not the other way around eh? If they truly believed in that mentality then Last Remnant wouldn't be a timed exclusive and neither would SO4.

8.1 - Chances are that Microsoft
funded the development costs of Star Ocean 4. Not to mention that Infinite Undiscovery is already made by Tri-Ace so they are familiar with working on 360 hardware and already have a game engine.

As far as Last Remenant is concerned I read previously that the delay was because of problems with the Unreal Engine 3 on the PS3. It was not originally supposed to release on the 360 first.

I think you're right about Star Ocean 4. I can understand why they'd bring Final Fantasy to the 360 in Europe and America, trying to tap into some extra sales with that install base... however, I do find Star Ocean's exclusivity rather odd. Just considering that the series is quite popular in Japan. It would make alot of sense for that one to be multiplatform as well considering its sales will be greatly limited by the 360's much smaller install base there. I'm not saying it won't do well in Europe and America. It just as well might. But if the game WEREN'T funded by Microsoft I could see no reason why they wouldn't release it on PS3 as well (in Japan at the very least).

to be honest, I don't even think SO4 is exclusive... watch the MS press conference and watch what the guy says about the 3 RPG's that are coming out on 360.. he specifically says Infinite Undiscovery is exclusive this september... Last Remnant will be exclusive this holiday... but just says SO4 is coming for XBOX360 in 2009 ( I believe he said Spring)

I don't think SO4 will be exclusive unless MS works out some kind of deal from now until then

Don't worry xbox fan there is a big chance that ff13 versus will come on the xbox, with the game's cost on the Hd console, the developper are forced to make multiplatform games to make profits.
The install base of this console don't allow a lot of profit for developpers.

10 - It certainly does mark a turning point
This certainly marks a turning point for my love and interest for anything Square-Enix. Final Fantasy XIII was one of my most anticipated games, and overnight my interest has gone from 10 to 0. It's been 3 years and not one mention or glimpse of gameplay footage. It's one thing to wait 5 years for a game that you believe will push the consoles limits, but there is no way in hell I'm willing to watch Square-Enix experiment at the expense of their fan base.

Looks like Final Fantasy 12 was my final fantasy

@Omega4 - Tekken 6 has never been designed too be multi platform, reason: the Tekken 6 arcade machine is based off PS3 hardware. So chance's of a port too 360 is slim at best.

Quote:
Namco announced today that its upcoming arcade fighter Tekken 6, shown officially in non-fantasy form in February, will be the first arcade game to use a PLAYSTATION 3 based hardware platform when it goes on sale later this year. Good news for PS3 owners, as it makes ports (and potential exclusivity) much more likely.

http://kotaku.com/gaming/na...

@BIoodmask - Star Ocean 4 & The Last Remenant are only Timed Exclusives on the 360. They are coming too PS3 at a later date.

@soul899er - 'White Knight Story' is been developed by 'Level 5' not Square.

One thing Microsoft has over Sony (besides the mountains of money) is the marketing team.

I have to give props to MS. They know how to advertise a game. Sony on the other hand, is looking like a bunch of newbs when it comes to this.

It seriously kills me that there were hardly any MGS4 commercials. Man, there should have been a motherf*ckin MGS4 happy meal.

I know I know, selling out to stuff that doesn't have anything to do with the game looks stupid. But look how it worked out for Halo 3. Everybody who bought a Burger King Whopper knew about Halo 3.

What Sony needs to do. Is sit down with whatever 1st party studio, And make an RPG to rival Final Fantasy.

We're talking top notch cut scenes. Epic story. And above all, truely realistic graphics that makes Final Fantasy look like child's play.

Of course this is a long shot, and unrealistic. But come on, they can drop $45 mil on Killzone 2. They should be able to drop $45 mil on the Final Fantasy killer.

And best of all, Sony can keep it exclusive for the rest of their lives.

PS2 Release - March 4, 2000
Final Fantasy X - July 19, 2001

I don't wanna hear any BS about the PS3's install base being too small. They're having money problems, and MS is just the company to help them out (Last Remnant to 360 first, Star Ocean TIMED EXCLUSIVITY) The fact that they're waiting until they release it in Japan before they start porting shows that they need money first. It's really sad what's happened to them, they used to put out one awesome game after another. And now....well now they do stuff like putting the next installment of a franchise on the DS, or a f'n cell phone.
