Kazunori Yamauchi: More Prologue, no GT5 soon, GT PSP still coming

We somehow managed to get Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi to slam on his brakes for a moment today and talk to us about his flagship racing franchise. According to the Polyphony Digital boss, his studio is focusing a majority of its efforts on Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. In fact, he confirmed that the proper, disc-based Gran Turismo 5 might not even roll out before 2010.

I wouldn't say delay I don't remember them giving a release date. And they did release Prologue not that long ago. And they are supporting that game with updates coming, so just chill.

1.5 - Ok to make us wait, just make it the BEST!!
There's still a lot that needs to be fixed and a lot room for it to be better.
Just keep them free updates and improvements for prologue coming and I would actually rather wait instead of getting a game that's not MUCH better than prologue.

GTTV needs to be free though, they are gonna charge $$ in Japan but I hope they won't in US and Europe. I think for the first month they are only charging 10 yen (10 cents) a show in Japan, it needs to be kept that way instead of like 300 yen ($3) a show =)

Oh yeah and they need to add support for G25, full real support instead of just supporting the weak ass cheap wheels.... I spent sh1t loads of money on a Playseat and G25 just for this...

@1.4: Grid's a arcade racer, but yeah it's a good game and Codemasters' got my respect. Dirt was more fun for me though except for the stupid lack of real online VS, but still the best compared to 360 and PC versions nevertheless.

Its not delayed. 2010 is too far though. When it releases as the greatest sim racer of all time, the time will have been justified.

I just want damage update and friend invites for the mean time. They can keep cars and track updates for full GT5

Damnit, that is bad news about GT5, although I won't mind as long as the game is good. I can see that in GT5 they are trying to make it as great as possible.

Jebus 2010 huh. 4 years into the PS3's lifecycle. Forza 4 will be out by then lol.

C'mon, by then the game better be in 1920x1080 resolution.

I thought the G25 wheel was supported seeing as there is a full section dedicated to that wheel along in the options? Whats the deal there?

The Logitech G25 is absolutely supported by GT5P. I only use my G25 & Obutto Chassis to play GT5P.

1.11 - they have one guy doing everything
rest of the poliphony is just testing all the cars and driving arround the world colecting track data and stuff. Thats what happens when you love your job (I dont know how Insomniac does it) u want gt5? get a job at polyphony digital
I sure hope psp2 is backwards compatible.

This is absolutely ridiculous. This is one of my favorite franchises but they are slow as h@ll. I know they have a lot of cars to build but how about leaving out some of the dumb cars. I don't care about having cars with 60 hp in a racing sim.

2.1 - The problem
The problem with GT5 is, other games like Ferrari, grid, etc. are coming out or have come out and the makers of GT5 keeps returning to the drawing board trying to make it the best. At the rate they are going, the damn game may never release, and by the time it does, no one will care, or the driving sim genre will be so saturated, that it will only sell moderately.

-_- They never even gave a delay and they JUST released prolouge a few months ago which they still support. They even told people when they released prolouge that it wasn't coming out soon. For the love of god would people stop using the word "delay" to mean "given a release date that's less than 8 months away". That crap gets so abused when it comes to the PS3 it's rediculous.

It's the damage I reckon. They've not even started properly implementing the damage - look there's not even ANY damage in prologue yet, and the fans were screaming for it. In fact, the main reasons GT5P was getting 7/8 out of 10s was the lack of damage and partly the AI. Damage is HARD TO DO and you can't just "add" damage to an existing car model. It needs to be explicitly made to enable damage (like having doors as seperate parts so they can fly off, crumple zones), so they are going to need to build all 700 (or however many) cars from scratch again WITH realistic damage (and you know they are perfectionists)
Shut this user up Let user speak

"... Damage is HARD TO DO and you can't just "add" damage to an

Very true.

"It needs to be explicitly made to enable damage (like having doors as
seperate parts so they can fly off, crumple zones), so they are going to
need to build all 700 (or however many) cars from scratch again WITH
realistic damage (and you know they are perfectionists)"

Yeah, and this is what they are actually doing. Comparing with GT4s
models, in GT5P now every part of a car is individually modeled. This can
be seen from all the edges now popping up on each car (also producing
the much more pronounced aliasing effect).

Let me say something further. Contrary to common believe, computing
the deformation/fragments is not that much of a problem, good
mathematical knowledge assumed. The problem is the mesh of each
car model, it now has to be dynamic, producing a much larger
computational overhead to hold each car together by using a more
costly dynamic data-structure to allow for an efficient computation
of all the deformations as well as to allow the mesh to break apart. Not
only that the mesh is unstructured (which makes it rather difficult to
implement it efficiently), it now also has a larger indexing overhead
which complicates the efficient data-access pattern even further.
However, the Cell processor is built to support a data-driven
programming style to allow for a greater variety in laying out your
data and how to shuffle them around. Yeah, and its takes some time
to do it right, of course, esp. if you are on a new hardware architecture.
GT5 will be the base for everything coming afterwads. Therefor, this
base must be as good as possible!

You'd rather not play any GT at all? GT has more content than most racing games out as well as having the best graphics of any racing game. Then there's GT TV, the new interior view and everything.

Prologue is a work in progress of the final game. Everything they are working on that gets added to Prologue are all testing grounds for the final game to be better. Even without releasing Prologue they have to go through this process of making sure things work before the final game comes out anyway.
Nothing that make it into Prologue is a waste of time.
Shut this user up Let user speak
UrbanJabroni - 538 days 14 hours ago
12.2 - "Nothing that make it into Prologue is a waste of time. "
That's like saying E3 builds aren't a waste of time...

A TON of work goes into putting together any playable build of a game...work that most developers would rather spend working on their actual, final product. There is an INCREDIBLE amount of work that goes into making a demo for an unreleased game, which was one of the reasons the original E3 was killed.

GT5P is an even more complex situation, because it is a "standalone game." Don't kid yourself into thinking that GT5P didn't take months of side-development, polish, testing, fixing and submissions away from development of the core game.

14 - another delay
the list keeps growing, of the top of my head:

Home: could come in 2 years time
FF13: wont come till 2010 due to 360 version
GOW3: No release date shown on trailer....i wonder why that is????...2010 release?
Killzone 2: Feb 09...but thats likely to change to later

Cant think of any more PS3 exclusives, Sony really should do a Nintendo and only reveal the game when its like 3 months away, would do wonders for their PR

14.1 - Pretty Negative
Home- will be out before the end of the year (it free, hard to complain about that)
FF13- will be out on PS3 in 2009
GOW3- March 2009
Killzone2- Febuary is a lock (GG said it themselves)

And much more.

LBP comes out in 3 1/2 months. Things are getting GREAT, quick.

14.2 - its hard to be positive with sony
Home: Tretton said it will be released when its ready which he said could be 2yrs, and after the 2.40 incident i think they will be being extra careful

FF13: SE said it takes 6month to localize for the US and another 6months for EU so thats a yr after the japan relases so 2010 is very likely

GOW3: no gameplay or date in trailer genrally means its FAR from ready like at least a year and a half

KZ2: im sure 2008 was a lock as well
