Bloomberg: Square Enix shares jump following FFXIII move to 360

Bloomberg writes: "Square Enix Co., creator of the ''Final Fantasy'' series of role-playing games, rose the most in more than a month after Microsoft Corp. said the developer will offer a new installment of the video game that's compatible with the Xbox 360 console.

Square Enix gained 5.2 percent to close at 3,250 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, the biggest advance since May 22. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average fell 2 percent.

''Final Fantasy XIII'' will be available on the Xbox 360 in the U.S. and Europe, Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft said in a statement yesterday. The game will be offered in Japan for Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 console and not the Xbox 360, Misa Tokunaga, a spokeswoman at Tokyo-based Square Enix, said by phone today."

@sonarus the shares NEVER dropped, the previous story was a big load of BS. The poster of that story misinterpreted a 0.06% variance into a 20% drop (must have had some special "glasses" on). However this story makes a lot more sense than the last one. It is only naturaly for shareholders to show confidence in a company when they try to expand their market. The only people crying about this are those with some sort of zealot mentality towards a console company that really couldn't give a stuff about you.

I don't care about it being multiplatform, I'm more concerned at the delay of the English language version because of 360.

The game was already over budget and multiplatform was the only way this game would be supportable, but I see no reason why PS3 owners have to wait.

i kno seriously why make us wait. wen they are gonna finish the game and release in japan

dumb@ss square making us wait, for the gimped up 360 version. imean they been working on the ff13 for like wat 3 years now.

2.3 - Wait for the 360 version?
FF is built on a cross platform engine. I'm not sure where the confusion lies, but the reason for using a cross platform game engine is to make it so there is little to no time between versions. The reason for any delay is for localization, but tis will be done dor both consoles at the same time.

Last night I was angry at SE, but today I'm not because as a matter of fact, the Xbox 360 cannot hope to achieve the technical achievement FFXIII will be on the PS3.

I predict FFXIII (360) being FFXII-HD with CGI cut scenes peppered everywhere.

6.1 - I've got to completely disagree with you --
If FFXIII sells well on the 360 - you'd better believe they will continue to support that platform. From a finacial stand point, this is good for SE...only from a "fanboy" point of view does this look bad. I think that the more people that can enjoy the Final Fantasy experience, the better ;)

SE is a proven solid developer and I'm sure both versions will be outstanding!

Bubbles ericnellie.

Square's announcement may well convince other third party developers to follow suit. And if the 360 version sells well in America and Europe... other formerly Square exclusives will likely follow.

As you said from a "fanboy" point of view it may be bad news. But if this means Square can make more money and in turn make more games for more gamers, then as gamers we are all better off! :)

mostl likly it would handle MGS4 becuae, they can handle 360 dumb down version of ff13 and thats a rpg.

but it will never happen sinse, kojima and i think ryan said so many time that is a ps3 exclusive. while ff13 was never always told it was a exclusive, they even said they might make ff13 multi to get money.

and plus, look all the stuff. the apple, the ps3 and psp and all sort of sony's stuff. and the jokes of the 360

neva happen

7.3 - Care to explain why the 360 can't handle MGS4?
It's not exactly the most beautiful breathtaking game ever. The textures can be so flat and dull in places, the animation is some of the very best but that doesn't mean they 360 isn't powerful enough. Hell the Wii could do those animations.

Size wise? The devs wanted UNCOMPRESSED audio, simply pleasing audiophiles. Compress it down right and you have pretty much the same game on a different platform.

Agreed Rocky!

That's what most said about FFXIII and yet look what happenened...

MGS4 is in a similar predicament as a third party exclusive and a Japanese company wanting more sales of their software than current (Bout 2.5-3m MGS4 have sold). Can't blame them wanting to more than double the audience (15m + 20m = 35m) to sell their games to. It's BUSINESS and the better health these companies are in, the better and more games we'll all get in the long run. GAMERS will be much better off in the long run and as a whole. :)

As for God of War 3, LittleBigPlanet and Uncharted 2. They truly are pipedreams for 360 gamers as all three are Sony developed and owned IPs. If you want to play them you'll have to buy a PS3. ;)

Any machine can handle any game.

You could get a DS version of MG4 if you tried.

FF13 is almostly completely designed for the PS3, but given the style of game it is, it shouldn't be too hard to port it over for 360. If they need too they can optomise the game assets and textures appropriately or make changes to the physics engine to ensure the engine runs fine. Theres no reason why a decent port can't be made of any game. Its likely that such ports would not be EXACTLY the same, but the differencesa would be minor enough that only the coporate boy soldiers would notice it to use it in their 'toy wars'. Gamers would just play a decent game...

Glad to see the shares rise a little.

Square make games I enjoy playing. I'm happy to see them get a bit more return as it means I'm likely to get play more games from them.
Who cares which bit of plastic plays it?

Those concerned about potential delays, need to read the clarification statements from Square themselves rather than listening to the usual internet chatter.

Delivery of the game will be first in Japan, at which point they will start localising the game for US and Europe PS3 releases. Also at this time they will start development of the 360 version.
No chance of the PS3 version being 'gimped' as its complete before the 360 version even starts. Square often take a long time to localise I know, but I'm willing to bet it will take them a lot longer to make a 360 version, so the PS3 European and US version of the game is very likely to ship way before the 360 version - unless MS get the cheque book out that is!

Thanks - looked up soem clarification and its still not essentially clear. The exact quote I've got is :

"We're ready to start developing FFXIII for 360," he said. "First, we will complete the game for PS3 in Japan, then begin localization for America and Europe while developing the 360 version simultaneously. The PS3 and 360 versions will be released at the same time outside of Japan ? although, due to language and other conditions, the game may not be released simultaneously across territories."

Note the question mark? I didn't put that in, thats exactly as its quoted.

Exactly! This is where it sucks the most. The PS3 owners have to wait for the 360 version to be finished in order to play the game. Even if the localization is completed a few months after the Japanese version but the 360 version isn't done yet, we won't get to play FF13. I'm okay with the 360 getting FF13, but having to wait even though the game is ready for shipment is totally a different story.

"All's fair in love and war."

The PS3 significantly delayed GTAIV, and I think it's highly likely that the 360 will delay FFXIII.

Either way doesn't bother me if the game fulfils its potential and as a bonus gives me more time to play all the astonishingly AAA titles on both systems.

A great time to be a gamer! :)

I learned a harsh lesson yesterday:

If your a JRPG fan that loves playing JRPGS.........get a XBOX360.

I'm a HUGE JRPG fan and I never thought I'd say that. There's not one JRPG on the PS3 and I had so many on my PS2 :(

The ONLY thing stopping me from buying a 360 is the reliability issue, as soon as that gets fixed (If it does), I'll get one. I was pissed off when my brand new phone had to go to repairs because of a design fault, I'll be equally pissed (if not more so) if that happened to my console.

Just a question: does the Elite suffer from the RROD as well?

I know how you feel... I've only played Folklore on PS3 and whilst good it had nothing on Lost Odyssey.

Elite carries a different motherboard so there are little to no issues.

If you're looking for a Pro Console, make sure to wait for the 60G, they have the brand new motherboards as well.

Either way make sure to pick up Lost Odyssey. That's the best JRPG I've played on modern consoles. And if you're willing go grab Mass Effect, for an entirely different type of RPG experience. :)

Man, I'm totally with you.

I never owned a Sony system before, and I bought my PS3 excited to play lots of JRPGs for years go come. One hasn't even come out yet, and then I found out that Eternal Sonata wasn't even coming to the US on the PS3.

The 360 already has Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Eternal Sonata (all of which I'd love to play).

If it wasn't for RROD I'd rather have a 360 at this point... :/

Most objective analysis suggests the failure rate dropped to about 10% for the elite machines. 9 out of ten elite owners will never suffer a glitch..

Just for another perspective on JRPG's for the system, I actually found Lost Odyssey to be tremendously tedious in the long run and stopped about half way through disc 3. The only JRPG I failed to complete in more than a decade, so approach with caution as its not to everyones tastes despite the sumptuous visual style.
I would suggest Eternal Sonata as a great JRPG, truly beautiful, far less 'contrived' and my favorite on the system by a long way.
I second trying Mass effect too - its not perfect by any means, but its great experience while it lasts. A flawed gem well worth experiencing!

@Superfragilistic
I love folklore to death - its not a JRPG though, but its infinately more interesting than L.O. in my opinion.

@ Prismo_Fillusion
Eteranl Sonata IS coming to PS3 in the west - the story asserting it was not has been proven to be false. Encharted arms is worth a look as you can pick it up cheap. White Knight Stroy looks awesome!

10% is still too high. I've been planning to get a 360 since last Christmas but the RROD thing is just terrible. It's kinda hard to send in your console if you live in a country outside of NA or EU.

Where do you live mate?

I'm in Australia and I've had a 360 for almost three years. When I got the RROD two months back, I sent if off on a Thursday and had it back the next Tuesday. Only took four working days and didn't cost me a cent! :)

360 has already launched in Australia right? Where I live, the 360 hasn't even officially launched yet so getting tech support would probably be hard. I had to import my PS3 from my cousin in the US.

I think the "fanboy" thing is getting way out of hand. Business is business. Square Enix has a first and foremost duty to make the shareholders in the company money so more shareholders will invest in future projects. If that means going multiplatform, so be it. The are not going to make an inferior FF. Just like MGS4 will eventually come to the 360. If the game costs well over 50 million to create, and the latest numbers indicate that it has only sold a little over 2 million copies, where does Konami recoup the money? If you "fanboys" think for one second that Microsoft and Sony are fighting like you guys their not. They work together all the time. If they really hated Microsoft so much why do they use their OS, why not make their own?

I have a question for everyone that is still feeling negative towards FF coming to x360.

Would you rather have Square make the game multi-platform and sell a few million more copies of their game or have the game sell less and have the possibility of future FF games going to the Wii.
Shut this user up Let user speak
himdeel - 531 days 23 hours ago
13 - Well when you have the...
...same games of all systems it really comes down to the systems themselves and added benefits they offer that really set them apart. Economics is logic and the bottom line is what really matters for most developers.

The only thing I don't like about the multiplatform announcement particularly with FFXI is how SE should've said this game will be multiplatform from the start or not mentioned exclusivity at all. For those individuals that did buy a system for one game (which I think is ridiculous) it's a hard blow but oh well those are the breaks you should've known better.

Likewise for me it leads me to believe there is even less credibility to any/all statements made by these developers regardless of their context. Whether they say a game is exclusive, or will actually be "good", or won't ship unfinished, I don't believe them one bit. Again it's all about the mighty euro, yen, pound, er dollar...and I'm for one am tired of wasting money on expensive coasters for the PS360.
