POP demo "not planned" - Too many are "awful", says producer

Eurogamer writes: "Hot on the heels of the Far Cry 2 team's decision not to produce a consumer demo of its open-world shooter, Prince of Persia producer Ben Mattes has confirmed that there's no plans to do one for the Ubisoft Montreal stable-mate either.

"Not planned," Mattes told us at the studio earlier this month. "Doing demos of open-world games is a technical challenge; plus we're not convinced we need to. It's a brand that has some history, some built-in fan-base and we can benefit a little bit from that. Whether you like Sands of Time, Warrior Within or Two Thrones, chances are you're going to love this game because there are elements of all of those in it.'"

1 - Just hope your fanbase can support next gen console sales
Frankly when devs dont put out demos it definitely throws a flag up. The game is either a AAA big title that doesnt need it or the game flat out stinks.

POP has been good but definitely not something im going to run out to buy.

As well single player games without multi are hardly worth 59.99 anymore. Rent at best.

Awesome decision. Most of recent demos have been destroying games instead of helping them.

I agree - Demos many times do more then harm then good since all they can offer is a taste - it can't show the whole picture...
I do not like demos.

3 - Compromise
I think a good compromise is to release a demo a few weeks after the game comes out.

The fans of the brand\IP will buy it no matter what anyway. During the first few weeks if the game is good it will sell more with word of mouth.

Then after a few weeks, they have nothing to loose by releasing a demo to allow a chance to the still undecided to give it a try.

Probally for the best to spend more time on the game. But, in theory, Game Devs should set a small team aside to make a demo so that people can download it for free and decide if they like it with-out paying any money and being disapointed.

i dont even download demos, they usually just make the game seem worse than it is.

Demos typically do nothing but convince me not to get a game I was on the fence about.

7 - Bad demo = Bad game...
I've never played a demo that I liked and been disappointed with the actual game.

And I've never played a terrible demo and had the reviews or gamers' opinions that the game was actually good, and the demo was a poor representation of the game.

In some cases, demos don't do the game justice because of the learning curve. For example, I LIKED the burnout demo, but all I did in the demo was drive around and crash into people in freeburn. I wasn't aware of the challenges or the events I could do the entire time and I played the demo for a very long time. I bought burnout paradise recently and it's one of my favorite games of this gen and in my top 3 racing games of all time.(it's different from gran turismo and motorostorm). While I never "hated" the demo, demo's sometimes leave out important aspects which adds depth to the game and in several circumstances, "completes" the game.
