The Orange Box PS3: Open Letter from Petitioners

SCRAWL writes:

"Toni T, one of the petitioners for the PLAYSTATION 3 version of The Orange Box has written an open letter to the world and has decided to share it exclusively with SCRAWL. His letter addresses the problems in The Orange Box on the PLAYSTATION 3 as well as the problems they've had in actually getting through to Electronic Arts and Valve. So here it is, for you to read. Hopefully someone will get through and help us Orange Box gamers out a bit."

Hit the jump to read the letter.
Updates:
Here is the letter, for those who requested it here on N4G:

Dear Madam or Sir,

I am writing to you today in the hopes you might be able to help myself and thousands of others with the problems we are experiencing with the PlayStation 3 version of Valve/Electronic Arts The Orange Box.

The problems concerning The Orange Box for the PS3 are two-fold. First, we are dealing with numerous bugs, glitches, and server issues that have rendered the game unplayable at times and have remained since the game was originally released in October 2007. More troublesome is the fact that our many attempts to contact Valve and EA through traditional channels —telephone, e-mail, and regular post— have fallen upon deaf ears. In a complete disregard for the large community of gamers who are experiencing these issues, in attempting to seek answers, the consumer support divisions of each company have repeatedly rejected pleas for help.

To begin, allow me to elaborate on some of the issues. While both the PC and XBox 360 versions of the game have been updated several times since release, PS3 players only have received is a generic patch that allegedly fixed several problems; unfortunately, these fixes are more fiction than fact, and those that did work only scratched the surface of the numerous flaws that exist. Primarily, the problems are centered on Team Fortress 2, the online, team-based, first person shooter which is one of the five games inside of The Orange Box.

First, the PS3 version lacks the functionality of its PC and XBox 360 counterparts, as we do not have the ability to create and host private servers (making competitive clan-based gaming extremely difficult); there is no proper lobby system with which to organize players and set up games; the servers that we do have are constantly plagued by lag, making the game virtually unplayable..

Second (and more egregious) are the number of glitches and flaws that remain unpatched in the PS3 version of the game, which include: a glitch that causes the friends list to function improperly or not at all, making it impossible to find players in the game; VOIP/microphone issues where communication will sometimes stop in the middle of a match or, alternatively, some players will not be able to hear others, and vice versa; and in-game exploits that allow players to cheat and ruin ranked games.

Third, it is unclear and increasingly unlikely that PS3 users will ever receive the upgrades, maps and updates that have either already been released or are coming soon for the PC and XBox 360 versions. Neither Valve nor EA are willing to claim responsibility for providing this content. In the single-player games contained within The Orange Box, such as Portal and Half-Life: Episode 2, more general problems include frame rate dips that render the game unplayable in some situations, occasional freezes, and long load times (sometimes minutes long) that break up the pace and flow of the game.

As part of the larger PlayStation 3/The Orange Box community, we have made several attempts to contact both EA and Valve in order to get some sort of satisfaction regarding these issues. However, at every turn, we have been disappointed to find runarounds and lack of acknowledgment from both companies' customer support division. I think that it is important you understand that countless number of fill-in-the-blank e-mail replies we have received from both companies. I myself have called EA tech support more than a dozen times, only to have the tech tell me each time that I would receive a phone call from a senior level tech within 24 hours. This has been going on since I began experiencing problems back in January, and I still have not heard my phone ring yet. Most of the responses from Valve or EA either shirk their responsibility and blame the other company or, in the case of EA, claim that the problems are on the users end and can be resolved by checking the The Orange Box-specific forums on EA's website. The only trouble is that no such forum exists, and any posts made in other sections of EA's forums are deleted as off topic. In fact, by looking at EA's website, you would hardly know that The Orange Box was published by the company. Maybe that is an indicator of how sheepish they are when it comes to supporting a product they know is a lemon.

Beyond EA's shoddy performance, it is not entirely surprising that our claims have fallen on deaf ears from Valve as well; co-founder and managing director, Gabe Newell has stated in published interviews that the PlayStation 3 is "a waste of everybody's time" and a "total disaster on so many levels." If this is the sort of opinion embraced by the top level executives, it explains the delinquency of their companies but does not excuse them for putting out an inferior product and shameful customer "service".

As we users continue to play a flawed and faulty version of a game that has little light at the end of the tunnel when it comes to updates and patches, we can only hope that the power behind this letter, can spread the word on this issue and help to achieve some modicum of success in having our voices heard. Our e-mails and phone calls have not worked, our complaints on both companies' forums have not worked, an official petition website listing all issues was created (over 21,000 visits to date), and even a petition signed over 2,200 times have all failed to light a fire under these companies and make them take responsibility for their products.

Thank you for taking the time to hear my concerns.

Sold my Orange Box, as many others have.

If EA/Valve don't resolve this I won't buy Ep. 3 or Orange Box 2 or whatever either...

it's sad the way we have been treated..we get mindblowing games such as MGS4, while in the same we get a piece of trash..an uncompleted, catastrophic, buggy and ridiculous game named Orange Box.

I think it might be time to just give up, cut your losses, and sell your copy of Orange Box; don't buy any more EA games in the future. It just seems fruitless and pointless to care so much about one stupid game, made by developers that don't care about you. At all.

There are much better PS3 games out now, and in the future, anyway. There's no use in obsessing about a product that they'll clearly never give proper support for.

only way to get their attention is to get people to stop buying EA/Valve products, and i say everyone should, cause other companies are gonna see this and start doing it, if they make money and get away with it whats stopping them from doing it...

1.6 - EA blows!!
I have found tons of problems on Battlefield Bad Co on PS3. I know we are talking about a different game but we are talking about the sam company and how they have pretty much shafted the PS3 users again. What got my goat was what the Ea rep politely said to me as spouted the list of problems i found with the game she basically said Ea doesn't care and that tho they file these complaints they don't actually hand them to the developer and that i should take my problems to to the game forums.

Why does this petition keep getting posted as news on N4G?

It's not.

If it isn't working for the PS3 get it for a 360 or PC. You have other options.

2.3 - It should, though
Because it is correct on so many levels, and this petition has become a big deal because it showed just how many people wanted something done about this issue and were happy with the console they purchased, yet they get ignored anyway because the publisher is too busy getting money in their pockets, and the developer doesn't give a rat's ass about a console that is a contender in the gaming market.

This has become a travesty in the gaming industry. This just shows that not only does Valve "hate" the PS3 (I keep thinking that they just are too lazy to learn any code for it. We now know how so many developers are able to create works of art on the PS3 without any trouble), but they are willing to screw the many people that are PS3 owners that want to play those games because of it. These games are perfectly capable of playing on the PS3, and the people at Valve are perfectly capable of both developing for the PS3, and perfectly capable of knowing that the PS3 system hasn't been a waste of time to many people.

And it's not going to help if people just say "oh, we shouldn't let the general public see this story." If you don't like the story, then instead of trying to suppress the story, contact Valve and tell them to get their heads out of their asses and stop MAKING the stories what they become.

2.4 - But there's no support at all on this game from EA/Valve...
Plenty of other games get patches and updates even thou they are much lower profile than OB.

If they weren't going to support it or fix problems, they shouldn't have released it...

Let me make sense of this.

He wrote an open letter to the world and shared it exclusively with SCRAWL? What is this world that SCRAWL and nobody else is a part of?

Now, correction to Gabe Newell's statement: Gabe Newell's arteries are a complete disaster (fat bastard) on so many levels, and Orange Box for PS3 is a waste of everyone's time. Don't blame the gun when the gunner is a retard.

No it's not sony fault . The only thing one could blame sony for here is the ps3 being less easy to dev for , as opposed to basically a direct x home machine like the 360 .

Plenty games got no lag or close to it and even lobbies , the ones are fault here are lousy EA devs and valve for basically licensing their game without any care . I have yet to receive any evidence of the xbox live network running more efficiently , besides "urban legends" claims from people without even a ps3 .
Only thing XBL got over PSN is obviously the services .

If they were "game specific" they would show up in ALL versions of the game, but the 360 and PC versions have none of these issues (I've played the 360 version extensively). So, for whatever reason, they ARE PS3 specific...

10.1 - Only a fanboy would call another a fanboy.
If you paid $60 for an advertised proper-working game and got crap, would you cut your losses or try to get some compensation for your losses?

I do think that the EA PS3 Petition is almost a lost cause, but change doesn't happen overnight. It takes well-dedicated people to make change. If we let crap like this go unchecked, then companies like EA will keep pushing the limits of our tolerance more and more.

First games cost $60
Nickel-and-Diming DLC.
In-game advertising (Think Skate)
PS3 gets crap ports
Journalism takes a fanboy turn for more hits.
Un-genuine game reviewers (Think Gamespot)

Although I'll never plan to buy an EA game for PS3 ever, I'll still support those that still want change because right now, it's not about actually getting a proper-working $60 game. It's about exposing EA/Valve for the crap developers they are and why every PS3 owner shouldn't buy from them. That's a wagon I can jump on.

At this point, I could care less if EA/Valve went PC/360 exclusive because I don't want their crap mucking up my PS3 library and making my system look bad with half-assed ports. Hell if they keep up this crap-fest I'll probably boycott them all together. I'll speak with my wallet with a nice FU to EA/Valve.

Like i said another time , i also blame the buyers . You know around that time that multiplatform games werent always good in their ps3 versions , how can you by a pc port of half life without checking first ??

Especially one that was released after the 360 version , stable but with still a few framerate drops .

You could have waited for preview , tests and reports that would tell you how broken the ps3 version is .

And if you knew the game was broken , and yet bought it , with the hope of a patch (damn from EA guys!! get a clue!) , then you surely dont deserve our sympathy and support . Enough news pollution already with the same petition getting constantly ignored .

What amaze me are people turning this issue once again in a knee jerk console war fest ...
Imo you're not very bright .. if you dont realize that EA's attitude could happens in the near , or distant future on any existing or future console for any constructor . Do you guys think they even care for a precise platform ? They saw an opportunity to cash in with a lazy port , and it will happen with them and other publishers whenever they'll see an occasion .

When , hypothetically , a popular game will be well ported over the wii 1080 and they might have issues with the PS5 or xbox 7800 , they wont hesitate botching it themselves for avid fans , while ignoring future petitions and complains :p .

13 - Hey guys...
This is hardly a valve/EA specific problem... there are many games (exclusive, first party, third party) on the the ps3 that have missing features concerning online... It's not an issue with 3rd party developers being necessarily lazy... No more lazy than 1st and second party when it comes to PSN. The one game people always reference to say that it can be done proper is Resistance. The problem is, is that is one game when I can name many more with all kinds of problems with the online

And here it is, and this isn't even a complete list.

F.E.A.R- no voice chat online
Virtua Tennis 3- no online mode at all
MLB The Show 08- no voice chat online(first party game)
Virtua Fighter 5- no online mode at all
Motorstorm- only 2 people can talk at a time during game
Hot Shots Golf- no voice chat(ps3 exclusive)
Battlefield BC:- mics go out after 5 minutes
Call of Duty 3- no voice chat online
MGS Online- Have to create separate id (wtf is this all about???)
GT5 Prologue- No voice chat online
Naruto Ultimate Ninja- No online mode, although there is a petition

etc etc

I'm tired of all this missing crap on my games, coupled with the fact that new games like NCAA 09 coming out next week wont be getting trophies, along with multiple other games I care about not getting trophies as well. Sony just sucks at online.. point blank

If you guys weren't such fanboys, you would just get a 360 or pc for games like this that will continue to have missing features or be inferior to the other versions.

Stop blaming EA/Valve for this crap. They did the same thing last gen when the PS2 was the lead platform for every game... Developers knew that the XBox was more powerful. Did they redo the entire code for the Xbox? NO. They just ported it over with minor improvements... Luckily the Xbox was easy to program for so the port went over well

I definitely disagree with you on that: Sounds like nitpicking to me.

You have to create your own Konami ID and Game ID. I hardly see that as problematic as say....a laggy online experience, no voice chat, bad matchmaking and crappy server support. Something every crappy port game either shares or is totally broken.

The petition complains about way to many things. There is plenty of lag in the 360 version, to host a full server in TF2 with the max players you have to have a really good connection. It can be easy to find one that plays fine but I'll get into a string of severs that either lag really bad or get booted out because of lag issues. The 360 version has really only a got a couple patches and not several. Never remember that you could host a private match in the 360 version either. Also want to see what exploits are in the PS3 version since the 360 version still has them too and people use them (like sky walking on maps).
The big thing seems to be the lag in TF2 that needs to be fixed. Don't know if it only has to do with the severs they have up running or if they really do need to release a patch. The new content that the PC version has had still has not come to the 360 version. They talked about coming to the 360 version but that was awhile back ago but its still not out.

If really want to enjoy TF2 to its fullest then buy the PC version (its cheap). You get all the updates and dedicated servers that never give you any issues.

Look past the fact that PSN is free, and realize that you do GET something more by paying for XBOX live. The problems with the online part of Orange Box and the other games listed above IS a result of PSN being an "opem" network-- it is up to EA/Valve to implement things in the online part of the game, whereas games for XBOX Live HAVE to support all of Lives features, and MS provides developers with tools and support. From what I've heard, Sony provides support... but only to first and second party developers (which is why Resistance works better online than a lot of other games).

16 - Class Action?
I'm just curious if anyone has actually spoken to an attorney concerning a class action suit for this matter. I don't currently own the game, but if I did. I think this might be something that I would consider doing. This may be the only way to get the fire lit under these peoples asses and get something done. Petitioning, blogs, numerous phone calls to support on both sides and emails have done nothing to help this matter, as evident by the lack of support for the game by both parties.

from the Class Action Lawsuit article via Wikipedia:

"The procedure for filing a class action is to file suit with one or several named plaintiffs on behalf of a proposed class. The proposed class must consist of a group of individuals or business entities that have suffered a common injury or injuries. Typically these cases result from an action on the part of a business or a particular product defect or policy that applied to all proposed class members in a uniform manner. After the complaint is filed, the plaintiff must file a motion to have the class certified. In some cases class certification may require additional discovery in order to determine if the proposed class meets the standard for class certification."

It's not about one version being better than the other as it is the company releasing a defective product and not doing anything to remedy the matter. If you buy something, you expect it to work properly. If it doesn't, you expect the manufacturer of the product to fix it, which they haven't.
