BioShock shouldn't have worked

Eurogamer writes: "Damnation developer Blue Omega reckons there was "no frigging way" BioShock should have ended up being successful.

Game designer Jason Minkoff was comparing it to Damnation to illustrate that all you can do in the shooter genre is pour your heart into a project and hope it gets noticed.

"We're just making the best we can, because a good game is a good game. And if you make a good game, somebody is going to notice and somebody is going to play it," Jason Minkoff told Eurogamer on our trip to see Damnation."

I hate these developer claims, even if they are taken out of context.

But Bioshock's success was ALL down to Microsoft, it had a superb advertising campaign. And that is all a game needs nowadays. And all the toher stuff about it beign intellectual was reviewers wanting it to be another "AAA" title. Truth is it didn't truly seperate itself from the pack.

And just by the way, it's nothing in the game that's bad, and mixing Underwater and 1930's was clever, but it's still System Shock, you know?

He's just regurgitating what Chris Kline said about BioShock.

4 - Ridiculous
The developer's statement makes me quite upset. Why should it have not worked? Bioshock was an amazing game; it was original, had a great story, an amazing atmosphere and best of fall it was ORIGINAL. The developer seems to think that because Bioshock was not a cookie cutter FPS that it shouldn't have done well. We need more games like Bioshock if anything, and less b-rated, trite garbage.

READ THE DAMN ARTICLE

How to mislead readers in one easy headline. Let me post the full quote for those of you not competent enough to read past the big shiny bold letters:

"Take BioShock: no frigging way that thing should have actually worked out. Fantastic game, awesome design, and beautiful artwork, but the thing is a damn underwater Steampunk 1930s combo thing. How should that ever have done well?"

Bioshock was great and if the PS3 version has a Trophies I will buy it again and play it without harvesting ADAM this time. Bioshock for me was the Game of 2007.

4.3 - Um, I did.
I did read the article. How is the quote:

"Take BioShock: no frigging way that thing should have actually worked out. Fantastic game, awesome design, and beautiful artwork, but the thing is a damn underwater Steampunk 1930s combo thing. How should that ever have done well?"

Different from what I said? He is questioning how something new and original did well. Developers should be striving for more ideas like these "Damn underwater Steampunk 1930s combo things". Read the comment closer; I've read the article.

*Edit: I understand where you are coming from. The article did have a positive message from the developer, but the statement quoted from the headline, drew negative attention from me. I almost feel as though he said what he did to get attention for his own game; perhaps he's taking a similiar approach with Damnation.

I think you guys are being a bit harsh. I mean, really, that comment is pretty much spot on regarding how popularity with certain games work out. Some games you look at and think "how the hell did that ever become so damn popular?", yet there the game sits as a platinum seller as if it was almost literally made of gold.

Look at the Halo franchise. It's a sci-fi FPS game and by the time it was released that genre had ALREADY been done to death, but despite all odds against it the game became a literal phenomenon in the gaming industry and now Master Chief is one of the most easily recognizable characters around.

Look at Mario? or Crash Bandicoot? I mean, there is "no friggin way" that those game designs should have appealed to the people and became famous, yet they managed to break all expectations and take off in to very successful franchises.

It's just like the guy said: "And if you make a good game, somebody is going to notice and somebody is going to play it"

The developer compliments the Bioshock team for pouring their hearts into a project and making a fantastic game. He says he hopes his team can do the same thing.

Wow..people here really need to actually read the articles instead of the stupid headline. I applaude this developer for saying that, pour your heart into what you do, and someone will notice it. -Great idea.

Yeah, while I did read the article, I was caught up on the quotes people were referring to as well as the headline itself. All in all the article had a good message. It is the initial statement and the headline quote that I have a problem with. If anything I think this article, as well as his statement, did well in one aspect: got attention for him and Damnation.

Nice read but I really think they shouldn't have compared their game with BioShock and saying "We're doing the same and want to make a good game" because seriously, BioShock was a huge game from experienced devs and Damnation is a unproven new game from lesser known devs.

While the developers of Bioshock weren't necessarily "novices" when it game to game development they were hardly "experienced devs" and Bioshock at the time wasn't a "huge game.

I mean, what was their other famous games? Freedom Force, SWAT, and System Shock 2. Only one of those was even remotely popular and highly adopted (if one could call it that) and that was System Shock 2. However, even SS2 was more of a cult favorite.

If anything, Bioshock put the 2K Boston/Austrailia (who used to be Irrational Games) development team on the map. If the Damnation devs can pull it off then this game could put them on the map as well.

Yeah, I've seen so many comments based on headlines and the opening paragraphs that get posted under the headlines that are completely off base. If people would take the time to read the article before making their comments or not comment at all if you aren't gonna read the article it would make the discussions 100x better.

were also talking about how much bad luck they had making this game with development issues etc

even from their point of view the chips were stacked against them and they managed to pull off a winner..

my hat goes off to their studio

What do your eyes notice first.

Graphics, same with most things in life.

your eyes seek out the things u want.

But after that, the game has got to be good to carrying on playing it, regardless of the graphics.

16 - You know you've struck gold when...
I don't like particularly like FPS games. It's probably because I remember this genre when it was new and I've long since gotten sick of "Another FPS game"...

But you know you've struck gold if you can get people who don't like FPS games in to your FPS... Bioshock was fantastic.
