Problems with the PS3 and improvements to make it better

XTREME PS3 writes:

"Firmware 2.40 brings the PS3 closer to a fully-fledged system, but there are still problems with the system software and features that are missing. In this article, we detail some of the problems faced by the existing system software and what additional features can make it better. While not everyone will agree with the problems and improvements features in this article, it just goes to show how many flaws the system has and how far off it is from perfect."

What disc reading issues? On the PS3?

I never encountered any disc issues on the PS3 and I never heard of anyone else having one.

2.3 - Possible Fix
I had this issue with my 60G where it would not read any BluRay media and i was out of warranty so it was either going to be $150 to Sony or attempt to fix it myself. I also had similar problem with my PS2 years back which i managed to fix by readjusting the lens so it read closer to the disc and it fixed the problem. I followed the same procedure and managed to fix my PS3. I'm not guaranteeing this is going to fix everyone's problems but it's worth a shot if you're out of warranty and cash. Also might help if when you readjust the lens, you give it a gentle cleaning as even the smallest smudge will cause it work improperly.

a well wrote and none bias post, i have the problem with my flash player..i can only use it on you tube but other website does not work, and the load for xmb...all this can be fixed i just hope sony takes note and fixes the problems, another thing is the internet on the ps3 is a bit slow.i know i have my computer for using the internet but sometimes when my computer breaks down i use my ps3 for browsing and it is a bit slow,...any way all this problems are minor and does not really affect ur gaming experence but it would be nice if sony takes care of the problems.

agree there are some features the op listed there that really would make the ps3 even more enjoyable. features like online profile, better flash player, downloading while on stand by,better video compatiblity and appear offline are some of the needed features. one feature i dont think he mentioned was the ability to mute players. i dont know about some of you guys but some ppl think by blasting thier crappy music they are making the game more intresting. please keep your music to your self im sure most of us that own a ps3 have a music player or pc at our side to listen to our music.hopefully sony is working on some of this features and we might get them in the future.

Yeah, I'm sure adding at least a few of those features would make a lot of people happy. It's good that the network has gotten as close as it has to Xbox Live, especially being free, but there's still a few features to be desired. The one that sticks out to me most is cross-game chat.

Of good points. iam still a little mad at not having the cross game chat, but i'll wait. and to add to that list. ps3 should include a dam mic, so games would be better online, not including the @ss holes you get every once in a while. but iam still happy.

It's a great console. Anything can be approved upon, XBL, PSN, Wii, etc. I do not think people complain that much the problms or issues these products. I think that people are complaining at how long it takes to fix these issues.

Microsoft has a patent on in game music so Sony can't make it mandatory for their games.

6.2 - flambeau is right
If Sony launched a system wide in-game music feature it would infringe on MS's patent and they would get sued. The only way for them to get around the patent is to have the developers integrate the feature themselves. Thats why all current games need a patch.

Given the target demographic, I doubt they're going to want "Watching ________ movie right now" listed on their friends list in every case.

That list does look nice, but honestly some of the listed stuff is unnecessary. We already have cross-game messaging (text, not voice) and I think it works perfectly. Why do I need to have a voice convo with a PSN friend who just wants to say "play COD 4." Sure it would be nice for certain situations, but it may be something to add once they even re-issue 2.4.

Overall, once 2.4 gets all the bugs worked out it will at least form a nice foundation for PS3 users. Believe me...after using my ps3 for almost 2 years it is very nice to check who is online when I am in an "offline" game and send a lite message asking them if they wanna play "X" game online.

Good article -- but some of the mentioned things are just unnecessary and I'd rather have them work on the performance of the new implementations.

I would have to disagree with your opinion that "In-Game/Cross-Game" voice chat is unnecessary. But I wholeheartedly agree that most of the things mentioned in the article are unnecessary. While texting is fine if you are in a 'pausable' moment in a game...it is hard to text while you are playing a game such as COD4, etc... It would be nice to chat with a friend who wants to play another game or game mode while I am playing another. I do it all the time on my 360. It is a very nice feature... especially since most people I have come across thus far don't know how to use their mic's or are just rudely loud. Which brings up another feature that would be nice. Permanent MUTE/IGNORE of PSN ID's in game matchups. At least to the point where you don't have to re-mute everyone every single time a match starts. Overall, I am very happy with the FW 2.40 . I think that the PS3 is coming along very well and I think Sony is working as fast as they can to get these improvements out. Anything that is done on the PS3 has to be made sure that it won't crash the system and that it doesn't infringe on any previous person's patents. You have seen some of the lame patents out there... there is probably one on the proper way to wipe your butt. Anyways, people need to have patience. As far as the in-game music goes... it has been said many, many times before... MS has the patent that covers an application running to access music from a gaming system. I am surprised that Sony is even able to get around it the way they are by letting the developers integrate it... I guess because it will be part of the actual game itself. For whatever the reason... it would be nice if Sony actually came out and said why they have to do things the way they do just to put it to rest.

10 - hmmm counterintuitive and counterproductive ideas:
The friends list takes long to load – if you have over 50 friends, your friends list can take a while to load, in addition, it takes some time for their online status to refresh. One way to solve this problem is to cache the list and reload it as needed. Currently, it seems that the list is loaded fresh every time the console is started.

(reason for the load - someone can remove you from their friends list - system calls home first to determine if list is still correct)

vs:

Limited friends list – Firmware 2.40 upped the friends list limit from 50 to 100, but this is still very restrictive. My friend list is closely reaching this new limit and it could be months before they decide to increase it again. Why not just allow an infinite number of friends?

(speed - see first complaint)

But a good deal of them are trivial that I wouldn't care much about. He also makes the mistake of saying the PS3 only has 256 MB of memory in the entire system.

The only features I am looking for are in-game voice chat and increased trophy support.

14 - "closer to a fully fledged system"
by whose standards?

PS3 offers more out the box than anything available anywhere ever.

Honestly, when Home comes out I'm not going to be walking around chatting to people at the bowling alley or arcade...or shopping...or at the theater watching whatever they choose to program people with.

I'll be doing what I've been doing. Enjoying single player games.

in game xmb helps, but it doesn't MAKE a system. Every system NEEDS more:

Wii needs a hard drive
360 needs to be more reliable XD
PS3 needs to communicate to it's customers better

Thats why me and every other ps3 owner was BEGGING sony to release in game xmb. If you mean it had blu-ray in it, then i'll say mgs4 is the only game that came out for the ps3 that actually NEEDED it. Compression tech is amazing nowadays

15 - well
some of the things i could agree with...but video support, skype, online profile support? first off, i just put all my movies on a DVD-RW, and play them back, it works fine with me..second why in the hell do we need skype on the ps3? like a ps3-to-ps3 chat? im pretty sure if you have a ps3, that you have a house phone, or a cell....third, is it bad the us ps3 users are trying to copy microsoft? why go all in with the online profile support...well this is all my opinion...i have no complaints, yeah maybe i have no music or trophies, but like i said, at least sony is TRYING and its FREE, you cant really complain when something is FREE, thats like calling Panosoic and telling them their batteries went dead in 2hrs and you got a 4-pack for $1...you get for what you pay for...these articles are stupid, i could understand if we had to pay, but its FREE, so stop b!tching or trade it in for a 360 (but i would never do that! lol)

16 - Pretty Good list
I also have to agree with a lot of the ideas in this article (I especially like the power-saving mode, friend finder, and e-mail address).

One or two of the issues might be fixed when the 2.40 patch comes, but I don't even have 2.40 yet, so I really don't know.

Personally, I don't online game too much, and I don't have any friends on PSN, so a lot of those issues don't bother me since I'm not really affected. But still, I see how it could be bothersome for users who do online game to not be able to fit all their friends on the list, or not be able to chat cross game.

All in all, a good list. I'm happy with what Sony has provided thus far, but I think we can all agree that there is ALWAYS room for improvement.

19 - What i dont understand about friend list...
They're not actually friends... online friends my ass.

Also, most of those people dont even talk or bother with them. If they're complaining about a short friend list, they need to get out more. Kids these days...

His complain about changing PSN names then having a PSN e-mail account contradicts itself.

19.1 - You're right
Some of the ideas in the article are contradictory, but when viewed alone, still interesting ideas.

I think the online friend thing works the best when you have a real friend (someone you know from work, school, etc) that also happens to have a PS3, and you trade screen names so you can play online together.

Personally, I don't have any PSN friends, so I don;t know for sure. But it seems like a good way to go about it.

dude, some people have more fun gaming with certain people online.

Just because you don't consider them "friends" doesn't mean people shouldn't have a way to keep playing with them.

I have people on my friends lists that I've been playing games with for literally years. apparently that doesn't hold as much weight as people I've only been hanging out with for a few months?

21 - well to be honest
that was a good list an extensive at that, but lets all be serious here, knowing that the ps3 is only got 256 of ram i don't see all these features ever making the cut, i mean maybe a few but not all. that is of course at least not until the ps4 comes out and that is if its design with a much superior memory architecture.

oh say 4 gigs of ram and an additional 8 SPES to current 8 to make it 16 with one or two extra ones locked away, now iwonder how much would a system like the ps4 would cost sony to make? hopefully not as much if they are using the same tech like blu ray and the cell since by that time it will all be a lot cheaper. i mean killzone 2 is said to use 4 of those 7 or 8 spe's hmm i wonder how much of those will heavy rain or FF13 will make use off or insomniac's resistance 2 i mean hey those guys love to make use of those SPEs.

And that whole thing about being able to display what your watching to others just exploits your privacy to others.

however there is one tiny feature he forgot to make mention off, and thats voice/video mail. and not only that but also being able to use this feature while in-game as well.

but everything else he mentioned was right on, now i just wish someone at sony took the time to not only read that list but also take it into consideration, i mean that whole email thing doesn't sound bad either.

either this is just my personal opinion sorry if i offended anyone with this, take this as an opinion and nothing more.

I didnt agree on any of his new feature list he like. All the things he wanted were like personal things like keeping your friends from deleting your saves. Cmon if you have friends who are going to do that then they shouldnt be your friend.

Things I think need to be improved is just the in-game chat. Everything else I see on that list is mostly dumb/uneccessary and ultimately a waste of time for Sony.

but just be thankful Sony hasn't charged you for all these features, which by the way, are only getting better by the day. At this rate, by next year it will surpass the XBL by leaps and bounds, IF updates are still frequent. Honestly, I could careless about all these "community" features that just encourage us to avoid real social interaction. If I wanted so many life-sucking features I would have shelled out the 50 bucks (for eternity) if I wanted all those pointless features.

Some of us 'thinking' few really just want to jump on-line and play a game. MAYBE have a easy to access friends list, but that is why the phone exists, move your overweight ass and reach for a phone. I know you nerd's fingers are too fat for the smaller and smaller phones, but I'm sure you'll be OK.

you know what would be neat i think, to be able to hook up a external cd/dvd/blu-ray writer and be able to burn stuff off your ps3 on to a disc if you so choose so, it would just be another thing they could add that would make it even more of a open platform i don't think it could be that difficult to implement
