Legal Mess Over Euro Alone In The Dark Reviews

Kotaku summarises: "This week, the following events took place: 1. We got a bunch of tips telling us that the Xbox 360 version of Alone in the Dark had turned up on BitTorrent sites. 2. Scandinavian games site GameReactor were one of the first to review Alone in the Dark. They gave it 3/10. Ouch. However, they then promptly pulled the review, and accusations of shady dealings were levelled against the site by Atari, who said that press copies had only been sent out the day before (the review has since been reinstated, and the 3/10 stands). Odd, seeing as many other European publications also had reviews go live this week, but whatever. 3. German site 4Players reviews the game. Gives it 68%. Then is threatened with legal action by Atari because, yes, Atari had no idea how the site got a copy of the game."

I might have to try qore. I'm too cheap to put out $12.50AUD for a Mag these days. That is like Petrol for 2 weeks on my motorcycle...

What are you talking about??

This is a gaming website doing its job. The game is a turd and they are warning you not to spend your money?

The story here is that Atari so blatently try and suppress an honestly expressed and valid opinion on this game.

The game IS A turd - having now played it, I can confirm its not worth your money.

While I don't trust the shady magazines...I expected very little from this game. Poor results would not shock me in the least.

5 - If the website was smart it would counter sue.........
the case would never make it to court. The hit generations alone would pay for the lawyer and Atari might stand tough for a minute but once the Atari is acting like EA comparison was made and the internet came out in support of the underdog site they would settle.

Well, even without playing the game, there is one thing I know. Hoe on earth does a horrible mess like Iron Man gets 4s and 5s (And one 7 from TeamXbox) but a title like Alone in the Dark that at least has some interesting ideas, has better graphics and new gameplay mechanics (Albeit gimmicky ones, I don't know), gets 3s!?

7.1 - From what I've heard I agree
All the footage and concept ideas (use of physics, fire, episodic structure & 1st with 3rd person perspectives) made me really intrigued. It's a big disappointment.

The PS3 version is stil being developed hopefully it will improve over the 360 and PC versions. We'll just have to see. Maybe I'l rent it for 360 now though.......

8 - Can this game really be that bad?
I have played some realy dogs but I had some high hopes for this one. Glad I have GameFly. This game may have never been nothing more than a rental but I certainly hope it's not a waste of some GameFly time.

10 - Isn't the main point that...
Those reviewers weren't sent a copy of the game so the only way they could play and review it was by downloading the torrent?!? Same goes for the other sites that got their reviews up super fast...suspicious!

12 - This industry is going down the Tubes
We trust Internet Reviews way too much.
Back in the Day I had no Internet and did not subscribe to Mags. Plenty games were bought but seems like every wants some PERFECT game. Looking at the way people react to Metal Gear reviews not being "Oh so Perfect" tell you something about this Gen.

1. Only the Hyped/Storied Franchises will sell well.(If not bundled or Launch title)

2.Less development teams will make money, since games will not sell much.

3.If this continues, there will be less Developers around, and the small creative ones will join the likes of EA because of financial reasons(risk bankruptcy) and we will have just big Firms that care about DEADlines.

Look at what is happening now, how many 2-3 tiered Devs have gone under or joined the dark Side? After joining a big Firm and years of bureaucracy, the "main lead" tends to leave and doesn't wanna be a slave anymore. With the rising cost of development, he goes out on his own but what kind of game are you gonna make without some good money/support as backing?

Reviews are Opinions but with the rising Cost of development and games taking 5 years to make in some cases, GO out and SUPPORT THE INDUSTRY. Try out a game for yourself. After all we all have our own Opinions bu twe tend to rely on Scores ONLY. A sucky game is still a sucky game though but too many discrepancies in reviews all over the place.

That screams Red Flag..which leaves a little room that someone out there can indeed enjoy the title for what it is. Not what some reviewers think it's not.

Couldn't disagree with you more. Go out and support the industry? Developers need to make their games good if they expect people to go out and spend 60 frickin dollars on a single video game.
