360: The New RPG King?

The Playstation 2 was famous because it had an extensive library of Japanese and Western RPGs. Sadly the same can't be said for the Playstation 3, which has been on the market ever since November, 2006. After almost two years, the Playstation 3 has very little to offer the role playing enthusiasts.

Microsoft on the other hand seems to be the opposite. It appears that Microsoft is fighting tooth and nail to offer gamers a diverse selection of RPGs which vary in both western and eastern themes.

1.4 - Well the ps2 didn't start getting rpg's until a while into it's existance...

The 360 is going to start getting some rpgs well into its 2 year mark...

I'm expecting the ps3 to do the same.. sometime around the end of this year beginning of next the ps3 should be getting some rpg as well.. but it would appear that this gen the money is into shooters.

So a lot of devs are leaning towards that side.. if White Knight and other rpgs do well, we might see a lot more rpgs on the ps3

it's clear that the ps3 is lacking, whilst the 360 has got quite a few, and some more in the works. i'm just playing mass effect, which i got last friday.....man that is some serious quality right there. i can understand why the sony fans are a little hurt that the 360 has the most rpgs, and will well into 2010. especially after years of claiming no diversity on the xbox, only to be trumped in nearly every genre, and then have the sony europe boss come out and say that the ps3 is the new shooter console...ouch.

I may receive some disagrees here, but there's one factor that a lot of people seem to forget with JRPGs. JRPG developers often like to come up with a completely new game engine for each new game, and that results in long development times. The Xbox 360 was the first system to market and therefore gives developers a full extra year to develop games for a "next-gen" console. The big JRPGs take 3+ years to develop which can explain why we're seeing all of these games on the 360 first. The PS3 was an entire year late to the party. There are PS3 RPGs on the way in the guise of Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles as well as Final Fantasy XIII. My point is that as the PS3 gets a bit older the games should be delivered. Simple console chronological analysis can show that. Star Ocean is a series that is notoriously long in development. I was annoyed that it would be on 360, but seeing how long a game in the series can take, it's not entirely surprising. Just a few personal thoughts here. Feel free to disagree, but please explain your opinions.

I'll agree with you that the PC is the king of western-style open ended RPGs. But Japanese RPGs are a whole other branch. While it's true that a few titles have been ported to the PC in the past in the guise of Final Fantasy VII, FFVIII, and a couple of others, about 95% or more of them are released on consoles.

During 2008 will be x360, since it will have most RPGs that year.
Since 2009 KING will be PS3(FFXIII, FFXIIIv).

But times change. I am sure that once some of the heavy hitters come out, the PS3 will get back in the game. I don't hear too many rumors about FFXIII coming to the 360 these days and to be honest, many will say once that game is released that it is the epitome of all JRPG's to hit any and all consoles. You could have 100 RPG's on the 360 but once FFXIII hits, they will all be in the bargain bin. It is good to see the 360 trying hard to gain more support from other fanbases though.

The PS2 is/was the King, and this is a new generation. So in that respect with all the rpg's already on the xbox 360 and the ones coming out. Hands down the 360 has the competition beat at the moment.

There is also Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts. Everything else is not much of a big seller unless it's truly epic and/or revolutionary, or on a console with an actually existing japanese install base.

does have a pretty good back catalogue of RPGs. Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect and Eternal Sonata were fun.

Also for this year Fable 2, The Last Remnant and Infinite Undicovery look pretty promising.

7.2 - It's the story that makes these games remembered

From what you said about Mistwalker it's obvious you have not played Lost odyssey. That is one of the most memorable role players ever since ff7. That game made me laugh and cry. That game is a classic, not because of the battle system, but the story which made me love Xenogears,ff7,and star ocean 2 has also made me love lost odyssey. Please don't just talk about the games if you haven't played them play them. everyone seems to forget it's about the games not the system.

Yeah, of course your the king when your competition doesn't have any. 360 trys to get its jabs in whenever possible. I think Sony isn't as worried about getting as many RPG's out there as they did on the PS3. The only important ones are Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. The rest didn't sell real well. They are attacking their weakness so far . . . FPS's. Once sony gets a biggest grip on the market, the rpg's will flow. It's just not their top priority right now.

I really don't see what MS hopes to accomplish by buying all these low selling RPG IP's. The 360 is about in your face action and shooters. It should stick to what it does best. Get me Gears of War 2 ASAP!

To be honest i have never finished a game more than twice (unless achievement whoring), i dont see the point, everything is too easy, there are no surprises left and to me its just like going through the motions, the only games that have that replay value are multiplayer ones like COD4 and Halo 3

I like how the sony defenders draw ff13 quicker than Billy the Kid. So you say that one game that could suck (ala ff12, x-2, etc) is worth a bunch of great, maybe not as famous, rpg's? Clearly a fanboy comment. I stopped caring about ff series after the x-2 disaster. I haven't even touched 12 and I had to cheat my way through x-2 and kh2 because they offered no "innovation" and crappy story. I used to be the biggest ff fan and bought the strat guide even for ff9 if that tells you anything. That was at the time when Internet was dial-up and I had to go to the library. Not every game can make it "Innovation Wise" and sometimes you have to go with the core mechanics. As long as you have OTHER great components to go with it as well, it should be fine. There is NO guarantee that ff13 is going to be a good game. The time it takes them to finish ff13, you can make 3 good rpg's.

How could you guys only care bout FF13? At the time I was really hyped bout FF12 and when i finally got it it wasnt really what i was expecting it to be. The game isnt bad but its not the greatest of the series . Im a Big JPRG fan and my Ps2 mostly got only jprg on it at the moment

Now for the 360 , Yep I've got one and Eternal sonata is enjoyable so is lost odyssey . Blue Dragon as done its time and im not playing it anymore . So why Can't the 360 be the Rpg king? I Mean Ps3 Cant be The King Right with the library of Rpg's on it being so small.

But still like my friend lorenzo keep on telling me FF13 is coming! He was saying the same thing over FF Crisis Core and when he finally got it he wasnt chanting the same thing. FF13 will sell no doubt the game will pass with atleast 8+ no doubt with all the hype over the game it cant be bad . Just like GTA4 right! We was all saying its one of the greatest games and blah blah but after a few weeks when they hype is off People started 2 realize the game isnt that amazing at all , Sum peeps even claimed that the Earlier 3D Gta where better.

2 make a long story short dont only wait for one game in particular when u can be enjoying other stuff like RPGS on a 360.

20 - Again, this show XB360 make more economic sence to developers

There are 2 possibilities:
1. As a lot of people accused, MS PAY a lot of money to SE or any developer that is willing to take their dirty money. I see nothing wrong with this! You pay, you buy something (executive right). What's wrong with this!?
2. XB360 IS EASIER to programme then PS3. A shorter development cycle means the game can be sold sooner,thus making a return to developer faster. Yeah, FFXIII may be the greatest RPG in history, but the development is so high & the development take so long, it may never recover the development cost. So for SE, they are batter to sell what they can, which are Infinite Undiscovery & Last Remnant on XB360 ASAP.

PS3 supporters always said that PS3 is a new machine & developers are not familiar with the PS3 programming. When they get use to the PS3 system, they will have great games........etc. But this is the 2nd birthday for PS3 now. If developers, Sony in-house included, still have problem programming for PS3, the problem must lay at the very foundation of the PS3 system itself. So, stop blaming the programmers!

Surprisingly - there are indeed quite few more on 360 than on PS3 for the moment.

Much of this is due to MS laudable efforts to turn around the 360 in Japan - but western RPG fans benefit.

Many of the best examples are on both machines of course, but despite not ratting either Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey as highly as most, I'd rather have the choice to play them, than no choice at all!

Of course, things change, and titles such as 'White Knight Stories' and the long awaited FF13 and FF verses will start to balance out the equation, but the fact is, right now, if you want RPG's you have a finer choice with a 360. Who'd of thought it?

Xbox 360 is the king on the account no one else showed up to challenge the throne. Sony is too busy stuck in last generation meddling with boring fps and Nintendo is too busy selling plastic devices and add ons to idiot consumers and dip **** mothers.

Xbox 360 is the king of RPG's in it, Bobby would've beat Daniel in the Karate Kid if only he didn't listen to John Crease and "put him out of commission" sadly he didn't listen to his inner self and instead went with the words of his master and got himself disqualified from the competition, knowing full well he could've beat Daniel and then went on to beat johnny in the all Valley Karate tournament.

I wouldnt say it is the King just yet, Prince maybe, but definitely not the king. Microsoft definitely has strong RPG lineups in 2008, and early 2009 as seen in the RPG press conference. But the PS3 isnt far behind yet. For some, FFXIII will undoubetly be a critical choice in making the $400 decision, and yes, we all know it will be huge in Japan, Europe and the Americas. Team ICO's new game, KH3 (Keeping my fingers crossed) will also keep fans guessing who is indeed the true RPG king.

With the PS3 proving to be such a disastrous machine for Sony, it is not surprising that all the RPG development houses are now looking towards the future with the Xbox 360 providing them the ultimate platform on which they can realize their creative visions while also ensuring an enthusiastic fanbase and revenue stream for the future.

RPG's are now at home on the Xbox 360, with the hottest RPG's on the planet, I know i'll be Jumping In.

PS3 is sh*t its hardware handi-capps devs vision.

Western and Eastern RPG makers know the 360 will be the PS2 of this generation except the 360 is more powerful. I'd rather change discs than have games on the inferior platform that would bug the sh*t of me to own a console thats weaker than the competition.

You know Square Enix loves the PS3 and Sony, they are just experimenting with the X360 because they want to capture more public from the west. Not a big deal, we still have their best franchise as exclusive and that is Final Fantasy.

the PS2 wasn't king of RPG's after just a year and a half

RPG's take time

we have White Knight Story coming, SO and LR are timed exclusives for the 360 but are still coming to the PS3

FF13 and v13 next year, possible FF7 remake (scrap that, almost definite FF7 remake)

we know Rogue Galaxy 2 and Dark Cloud 3 will be there from Level 5 somewhere down the line

Suikoden 6 from Konami will be here soon to add to the PS3's SRPG library (that already consists of Valkyria Chronicles and Disgeaea 3)

Cross Edge is a PS3-exclusive JRPG in Japan that could come to Europe or the States

Persona 5 is likely to be PS3 exclusive

it's doubtful that Kingdom Hearts 3 will be on the Wii exclusively

things take time, RPG's snowballed on the PS2 after a Final Fantasy release

here's betting the same will happen this gen on the PS3

its selling faster then the 360 did, its out sold the 360 world wide in 07' and just look at how its doing in 08'.

yea the cell, 29 times more powerful than your average pc : P

the ps3 is still a youngster, i gaurentee all of you wont have anything to say when the ps3 turns out on top except for "oh, ps3 games suck"

ps3 has alot of stuff to deliver and its going to dominate, i like the 360 but when your showing weakness this early in the game, on a competitive stand point, it has a bad game plan compared to the ps3.

More and more game designers/producers etc... are giving there full support to the Xbox 360 and Ms and aren't losing anything as apposed to sony and the ps3, there losing support almost monthly.

There really isn't any RPG Games that are worth playing other than Final Fantasy.
