Sun Sets on Afrika

Ripten's Patrick Steen writes:

"After a long sleep, Sony's mysterious game Afrika made an appearance on the interwebs last week through the Japanese PlayStation website. Sadly Japan is where the game might stay.

Is Phil Harrison's departure the reason for SCEE's move? Are Sony trying to close their pockets on games that don't have huge profits predicted?"

Read on for more.

phil harrison was all for casual games

he was actually against big budget games like getaway and 8 days

"It seems Harrison was in fact a cheerleader for the whole casual gaming thing at Sony, and that this bizarrely risky-sounding move may reflect his disappointment with Sony Japan's sluggish engagement of casual gaming."

http://blogs.pcworld.com/ga...

"It's a very interesting and frustrating thing for me to experience because I have been banging the drum about social gaming for a long time, with SingStar, EyeToy and Buzz," Harrison allegedly continued by say, "And our Japanese colleagues said that there is no such thing as social gaming in Japan – people do not play games on the same sofa together in each other's homes. It will never happen. And then out comes the Wii."

phil harrison said he was disapponted in sony failing to take advantage of the casual games market. hence atari is now moving away from big budget games like getaway and 8days.

so the article is based on pure speculation and is actually wrong in it's assesment of phil being a defender of titles such as the getaway and 8 days.

another bad piece of games journalism

"he was actually against big budget games like getaway and 8 days"

Incorrect. Harrison was a fan of Eight Days when he was at Sony; he was one of the few bigwigs at the company who thought the game had potential.

When he left, the game lost its biggest supporter.

I was hyped about this game since its first video showing (2005?).

What a LETDOWN Sony! VERY disappointing.

You guys better bring AFRIKA to the US!

No, the africa trailer played in america too. Not the most recent trailer, but the older one. They wouldn't show africa in america if it were a japan only game.

Region free so it's not really a problem, as long as it has English language option/subs that's fine with me.

I still think if enough interest is shown outside of Japan the game will release everywhere.

Even if the titles didn't always sell too well because he knew those costs would be offset by profit from other titles. Looks like that vision may have left the building with him...

This is one of those games that even if you import, the point of playing the game would be lost, since it's a game that you learn about the animals and all those encyclopedia descriptions would be in Japanese.

I've been following this game's posts, every time I see alot of comments like, "it's an interesting game, but I don't think it justifies me paying for it."

I mean if a lot of people are saying that and won't buy the game when it comes out, what's the point of Sony brining it over right?

I think it's unfortunate for people not being able to play the game, but I also understand no company wants to do business where they loose money. If people really want games to be ported over, mean it when you say it and buy the damn games when they come out so the companies won't end up doing these kinda decisions.

I'm importing simply because I can read Japanese. I can probably help out translating play mechanics for fans, but I doubt anybody would translate the whole encyclopedia included in the game though. Real fans of the game can probably look those info about the animals up online though...

I dunno, hope they bring it over cuz for some reason I already like this game alot and I want to support it.

13 - It would be a shame
if Afrika does not get released outside of Japan. It may be region free, but I don't read Japanese and it looks like there is a big reading component in the game when cataloging the animals. This was one of the games that really excited me about the PS3's potential when I saw that first video at launch. The animals looked so f'ing real that it was like a National Geographic video. Maybe we'll find out more at E3.

This article is based on the story here http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

...which is extremely light in detail, not giving any official statement or even quoting what they were told. So I doubt its credibility.

One of the things I've always found great about the Playstation line up has been its diversity of titles. Sure you get the big blockbusters, but they are always prepared to try something different and do titles that a little more experimental too. These are often my favorites, so I'd be very surprised if they started to concentrate on blockbusters only, and feel this would be a retrograde step for them.

The other thing I took offense with is the implication that it would be 'the Brits' would be the ones who might want to shoot all the animals! Its Americans that insist on shooting wildlife and calling it sport, and the 'Cabela hunting' titles are a great example of that, selling almost exclusively to Americans, who have a large amount of recreational hunters. We hardly have guns in the UK (thank god) and most Brits would want to photograph animals on safari rather than hunt them...

I love the experimental titles. It separates sony from the rest. I agree that it would be a backward step if they decided to go with just blockbusters...

As for the shooting of animals, it was a stupid comment by the writer of the article and should probably be left at that.

17 - Sad day for my kids
It seems like there are some real issues at Sony with releasing content. It seems silly for them to spend all this money in dev, and then only release it in one territory. Spend a little more to localize it and release it on PSN (zero distribution costs).

I was really looking forward to this game for the kids. They LOVE animals and would have loved this game.

Come on Sony. Get with it. While we are at it. Where the hell is Wipeout?

The last I heard, Afrika wasn't coming out in Europe, but it's coming out in Japan and the U.S.

It does seem dumb to develop a game and then only release it in certain territories, but if Afrika wasn't a really big budget game, then it's probably possible to contain the game within on region, but the game still wouldn't do as good.

But even if the game only comes out in Japan, PS3 owners around the world can import the game because PS3 games are region free, so it's not that much of a big deal.

I think that a game like Afrika might do pretty good because it's something new and refreshing. I don't remember seeing a game like Afrika since Pokemon Snap on the N64.

19 - This game will come to America, but probably not Europe
I say that because that is how it normally is (sad but true)

But it might not go to Europe considering they have to translate the game into so many different languages

But on the corporate side, Sony Europe has some issues right now. All the canceled projects and/or problems are coming from the SCEE division of Sony. Examples are Getaway 3 and 8 Days being canceled. So it's believable that Africa might not go to Europe.

However, I'm almost certain the U.S. will get it.

I can see the tend now at Sony full on. If it's not a follow up or attached to a movie IP they won't green light it. Eight days, Afrika, Getaway and now recently Infamous Sony is obviously killing off what made them great. They're killing off low key, out of nowhere, killer games that are actually better than the big budget ones Ea and ubi are forcing us into seeing as viable.

Ghost hunter, Primal, Shadow of the collusous, Ico and loads of other games from Sony's in house are the reasons why I loved Sony and now they're basically doing away with anything that isn't a follow up to an established franchise.

Phil Harrison and Ken Kuturagi were both the minds behind Sony and now they are gone, Sony is slowly dying.

I've been googling it and I haven't seen anything about it being canceled. And Infamous is still at Suckerpunch's website.

So until PROOF comes out, I doubt it's canceled.

Realistically, they have only cancelled 2 games, and one might not be coming to PAL regions. I doubt they are slowly dying. It sucks about 8 days though, but maybe it just wasnt working out. Maybe behind the scenes it was turning into another Haze and sony pulled the plug rather than continuing to invest in a dead horse. Sony are in this to make money, so i doubt they are going to can promising titles. Sony knows that their strenght has always been creative IP's.

If i was sony, Id concentrate on getting the big names out now (ff13, gt5, lbp), then lower the price of the console to make it more accesible to casuals, so games like afrika are more cost viable. Big budget casual games wont get alot of sales when the console is priced so high as to really only attract hardcore/semi-hardcore players. Imo.

This is just the after effect of announcing so many titles that are so far in the future. There's a reason most companies don't announce their titles till the year before in most cases.

why not bring it to US/EU I mean they go on like they have to remake the entire game for each country why?? i'm 100% sure its easy enough to change the language on the game costing next to nothing and no harm in releasing a few copys to see how it sells or hell stick it on PSN
