Taking pictures...LAME. I don't want to shoot animals or anything like that but with such a great looking graphics engine, i expected a bit more.

The description emphasized on the game being more of an "experience", with the animals and environment in Afrika.

So it sounds like an experience game while learning about the animals in Africa with a Pokemon Snap type of game play.

5980 yen is also on the cheaper side of the Japanese PS3 games. So it might be cheap when it is released overseas also.

2 - imo sonarus...
i like the variety that sony offers, and because they just keep coming out with new stuff that's how they have managed to have something for everyone..

Having said that, yes it would've been nice to have some more interaction but judging by the trailers i can't say that i'm shocked..

After all having a break from shooting people or aliens it's nice to have.. even thou practically you're still gonna be shooting.... well pictures not bullets

5 - Nice
Something different than the usual lot of games.

If they can make the animals respond according when you get too close(flee or attack) then I'd buy this for sure if it was made available.

Would love to get as close as possible to a Lion or croc without getting munched. They should offer more points on how close you can get to the animals for the best shot.

Me like.

7.2 - I guess he figures taking pictures of animals isn't as manly
as building a pinata garden or having a bear build toy cars/airplanes out of trash he finds... Fortunately for Sony, Afrika isn't 50% of their first party line up for the rest of 2k8. =)

Personally I think this game needs more to it... such as being able to get hurt.. i think its needs to be more exploration like getting in deep into the veld and such. Camping... that would make it more an experience, this highlighting the taking pictures element. Could work imho, and who knows, this could easily get upgrades for different environments... such an underwater, jungles and such.

oh btw, Afrika means Africa in Afrikaans... a language of South Africa.

Sounding like a pass for me...Though maybe just maybe it can be a relaxing game like Echochrome. Where after you've came home from a long hard day you can just pop this game and relax a bit instead of having to concentrate alot with other games. Just trying to remain a little optimistic.

(this is a joke, but serously, when you hit the link 'Release Date 8月28日発売予定 Release August 28, 2006' NOT 2008.

11.1 - This is why...
Google Translation SUCKS ASS!!!
8月28日発売予定 just means "8/28 On Sale".
No where in the page says 2006 at all. I don't know where Google Translations get that number.

This is the reason why I translate things cuz while sites like Google Translate are useful, they are totally random...

My dreams of a new Pokemon Snap may come true! ^___________^

They need to make sure they add that level of addiction though, points, multipliers, bonuses and the like. I hope this comes out like I want it to, it would make me so happy :'D

I was always hoping you would be able to make videos of the creatures. Especially since all this Youtube APL and PS3 news had been popping up.

I mean just imagine being able to create your very own (albeit virtual) video documentary of creatures of Africa, apply music to them and post them on Youtube directly from you PS3.

Doesn't matter though I'm still very interested in this game.

16 - May just be me
but i love wildlife. I even have all those wildlife blu rays. Planet Earth is by far the best. I will be considering getting this if it's $40 or less. I am kinda excited to see how they implement this. I went on an African Safari once and we did the hot air balloon thing and for those of you who have not had that experience i can understand why you may not appreciate this game. If it's anything close to as beautiful as real life then this will be an instant hit. For me at least!

17 - let me use my HOME avatar
and i'll be set. unless, of course, they have an extensive character creation mode here.

i love nature. i love National Geographic and the Discovery Channel documentaries about animals and such, so this game seems like a nice interactive diversion. nothing more.

i remember thinking that the photography element in Beyond Good and Evil would be "lame," but it turned out to be one of the most addicting aspects of that game.

since i don't think i'll be running with the lions in real life anytime soon (especially after i saw this video on the net of this idiot who got out of his car to take better video of the lions, amid protests from his wife, and he got killed by the lions; one attacked him from behind while he was focused on the ones in front of him), it'll be cool to explore in this game.

is it a PSN title, or a Blu Ray? because i also want to know about SIZE. i mean, it's not like Africa is one of the largest continents or anything, with a lot more than just plains.

it'd be awesome if you could traverse the many forests and caves also.

for the past generation, Sony has really pushed the diversity of the Playstation software lineup. i think what a lot of people who never owned a Playstation, or Playstation 2 don't realize, is there is a HUGE amount of variety in the Playstation library. about as many tastes as you can think of are present.

the only reason why Microsoft gets unfairly blasted for being a "shooter" console, is because, well, just LOOK at what they choose to highlight:

Gears of War
Mass Effect
Bioshock
Halo 3

etc.

games like Viva Pinata, Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon, Ninja Gaiden, etc only seem like an answer to another console manufacturer's question.

it's like Microsoft has this checklist:

"okay, FPS titles. definitely check."
"JRPGs. check."
"quirky Japanese games. check."
"cuddly platformer. check."

it doesn't feel like a single of Microsoft's non-shooters are made because of an actual desire to create such a product, but to fill a hole in their lineup.

people flock to Sony, because the vast number of games don't simply feel like filler titles, but actual products that Sony genuinely thought there would be interest in.

obviously, with the success of games like Singstar, Buzz, Katamari Damacy (3rd party, but still), etc, they were right in that supposition.

in the gaming industry, variety is key. it finally seems like MS is realizing this, but unfortunately, it takes a long time to make a game, and any recent steps they've taken to broaden their console offerings won't be felt for a while. Sony realized that they were relying too heavily on third parties at the end of the Playstation's run, before the PS2 launched.

with the PS2, they decided to bump up their in house development significantly.

that's now benefitting the PS3, as it seems like every other week, we are being hit with some new product or service from Sony.

Microsoft has 7 internal studios.
Nintendo has about the same. maybe more.
Sony has 24 internal studios. 21 of them are first party, three are second party.

all of them are hammering away on many announced, and unannounced PS3 titles.

those same studios are the ones that brought us some of the most classic Playstation games of last gen:

SOCOM
Jak and Daxter
Ratchet and Clank
War of the Monsters
God of War
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Mark of Kri
Primal (underappreciated, but really good)

and quite a few more that i can't think of off the top of my head.

they took those steps LAST generation, so they wouldn't waste time THIS generation.

remember, the PS3 still isn't two years old yet, and it takes time to make quality games.

with the PS2 still going strong, Sony had to balance producing games for the PS2, the PSP, and the PS3. console transitions are always hard, and as those 120 million plus PS2 owners start adopting HDTVs, and moving onto a next gen system (most likely a PS3), Sony has slowly started shifting focus. hell, they've already shifted focus, as we don't hear much about upcoming first party PS2 games, but MANY upcoming first party PS3 games and services. clearly, Sony is trying to expedite the transition, and get PS2 owners off their @sses and into a shiny new PS3.

games like
SOCOM: Confrontation
Wipeout HD
Resistance 2
Metal Gear Solid 4
Motorstorm 2

and services like HOME

this year will certainly get them to look in the PS3's direction, if not outright buy one.

THEN, games like

God of War 3
Killzone 2
Team Ico's next projects
White Knight Story
Final Fantasy XIII
the "real" SOCOM, developed by the original guys, Zipper Interactive
Uncharted sequel, or
Jak and Daxter PS3

etc, will most certainly get them to come over NEXT year, as well as a bunch more new IPs, announced and unannounced waiting in the wings (ie Infamous).

Sony knows how to run a strategy, but most haters are too blind to give them credit where it's due.

Playstation products ALWAYS start off slow (see: Playstation, Playstation 2, and PSP, and their year one lineups), but ALWAYS get their in the end, when it comes to games (see: Playstation, Playstation 2, and PSP's current lineups). in the meantime, key exclusives keep us excited (ie, Metal Gear Solid 4 hitting next week), and quality multi-plats also keep us busy (from Call of Duty 4, to Burnout, to DMC4, to GTAIV, and titles like Bioshock that didn't show up on the PS3 due to time, and development hurdles).

there's more than enough gaming love to keep Playstation (and X Box, honestly) fans happy until more key titles hit in the coming year.

Afrika sounds like a neat diversion, and if it's as large and expansive as the continent it's based in in terms of geography and animal variety (and on a Blu Ray disc, it COULD be), then i'll be all for it. hopefully a US release will happen. if not, i'd be tempted to import it (along with White Knight Story).

The Japanese store is taking pre-orders so at least it'll be a blu-ray release in Japan.

With the amount of detail plus footage vids of the animals, seems like it would be too big for a PSN download title though.

I don't know if you was being sarcastic (shame on me f yes) but looks like you need much more of you National Geographic fix.

Africa IS one of the biggest continents of world, the second or third one. First is America, since you have North, Central and South together, after that, Africa and Asia (don't know which is #2 and #3).

Not enough, forests and caves are the boring part. The characteristic life on Africa (Lions, Giraffes, Zebras, Gnus, Elephants - at least the bigger species of African Elephant - etc) are all in the Savanna, and a few on deserts.

I would not say a game will NEVER put the facts that good on the screen as much as a TV show... But I really think we are not prepared NOW, with the specialized people not interested on the media, how to put the things said right on this game? You will not see those ichthyologists and entomologists that can go dive or go to the forest to see real life, putting their @$$ in front of a PC with programmers to develop a game. Nobody would like it more than me, but I don't see Discovery Channel investing on it.

I know you got many other points that don't relate to it, but you talk about the game and made such a parallel with TV shows... I can understand your enthusiasm, but don't go too overhype it.

As a biologist, I don't know if this is a good or a bad thing... I can see this game telling people a big pile of crap, just as I can see it teaching kids, it will depend on the take of the "history" (if we can consider informations about animals history for a game)...

But anyway, I should buy it when it comes overseas, or at least rent it to take a look.
