PSN - Let's Be Honest

There has been a lot of talk about what Sony is going to be giving us, with very little of the actual giving. The video store is rumored to drop at E3, HOME is rumored to be here in Fall, new and exciting content is rumored to be coming, and yet week to week, nothing is here, and I'm feeling more and more disenchanted. Sony had a huge opportunity to put these features in place over the past 6 to 8 months, and truly take a bite out of Microsoft's market share. The question is, is it too late for them to get this all back on track? Only time will tell.

1.1 - yeah, people forget that sony is new to the online gaming aspect.
Nobody complained on the ps2, because it wasn't that big. So sony didn't go into it that much.

But now that it's big, Sony is try to make a larger step towards gaming.

I think an Average Joe would be surprised by the things ps3 CAN do right now. I also think that $50 for a service would make consumers reluctant to go online. It's not a lot, but it's something. They are already paying for DSL, then why is it not free.

1.2 - that;s what competition does
nobody complained about ps2's online structure, because no one had a good online structure period.

when xbox 1 came out, and xbl first came into the scene, that was when ps2's online component looked archaic.

xbl has forced sony to hit the drawing boards with PSN. and be glad, or right now you would have only 4-5 games with online, no downloadable content, or heck, a simple message system to talk with your buddies.

Do you remember E3 2000? Sony was very well pushing online support with pretty neat ideas I remember eating up like candy.

*counts on fingers*

That was 8 years ago....

PSN and the online support will get better from Sony, but accept the fact that it is infact lagging, nothing wrong with that, crap happens. I was gaming and chatting online with games like Soccom, Freqency and much more on my PS2 way before my Xbox. They are not the online noobs you label them as.

It's been free out the box and has gotten better at a very fast rate. The new PSN store is so easy to use and in-game xmb is on the way.

The author can talk once he has actually tried to code anything even remotely close to what Sony is doing. Then talk. Until then, STFU.

Things that are rushed hardly ever turn out well. I can think of some games, even some consoles ...

2.2 - Either way its not important
If people want to socialize and talk about their games so much like on xbox live just go to myspace or n4g lol.Frankly to me games are more important and whoever delivers wins my money. If I want to talk to my friends I will just play PSN or Live. But I dont want to pay money for the "privilege" of social gaming.Even though the marketplace has movies I got netflix right here to give me a better selection.Seriously the Live marketplace has alot of garbage movies.

completely agree, psn IS moving forward. people expect the psn to automatically have everything there for them on a plate, this isn't possible without charging a subscription fee. but to say the psn is free, the updates that are coming are fantastic and better that of xbox live

I'm just curious, but who expects everything to happen automatically on PSN? Has it not been 2 years since PSN launched? Have these features not been talked about for years now?

And the features that are coming are what Xbox live already has, so I don't understand how you can say it will be better. They are also years late.

I love my PS3, but I'm tired of waiting all this time for content and features it should have had YEARS ago (I'm not talking 2 months ago, or even 6 months ago). You cannot deny that there is an utter dearth of content on the PSN store compared to Xbox LIVE, and we know of next to NOTHING coming any time soon to the PSN store, aside from SOCOM and Wipeout. While those games are great, and I am VERY excited for both, you are trying to attract millions of people out there, casual gamers as well.

To me it seems like Sony wasted a lot of time building the commercial side of Home, with sponsorship and the like, instead of just improving the current PSN. I wouldn't have minded to wait an extra six months or year for Home if it meant getting in-game XMB, unified friends lists, etc., a year earlier.

Trophies, Home, YouTube, and things like that I could give or take, but not being to pause the game and go chat with a friend is a sin against the online gaming gods.

@BRACHATTACK, the reason why there are more updates on PSN currently is becuase they are contantly adding and debugging a service that has been out 2 years. XBL has been out more than 5 years and has a lot more time to fix a lot of there earlier problems. So people should not compare them. TBH, XMB should hve been there at lunch, but they are working on getting it out. It takes time to perfect online service. Whats funny is that Sony and Nintendo both said online gaming had no future, LOL, yeah right. Sony definately has turned that thoguht around. I would gladly pay for PSN once I see the improvents I want. Is it a good service now, yes, no question! XBL is not perfect either, but as PSN improves so will XBL.

sorry for being optimistic. i know where you're coming from because i am frustrated by the lack of things offered by psn at the moment, but you have to realise that the service is free, live takes a huge income which allows it to improve. i feel that home and in game xmb will add immensely to the psn experience. keep the faith brutha, the wait is nearly over:)

Don't be sorry for being optimistic, but just be realistic as well. Yes, LIVE charges $50 a year, but that most likely goes towards paying the guys who monitor content and the service itself, as well as bandwidth costs, not necessarily improvement of features.

I'm a developer myself, albeit not on a grand scale like LIVE or PSN, but I know the trials and tribulations it can take to get a product ready and on the market. I can even forgive the delay of HOME, but the lack of content on the PSN store is abysmal. I cannot overlook that, simply because you can have a team of 5 guys make a PSN title. With Sony boasting the biggest internal development studio on the planet, they have no excuse, ESPECIALLY when most of their exclusive games this year are from external developers (MediaMolecule, Insomniac, Konami).

4.2 - at siaris...i don't know
you can't forgive sony for no content on psn? i don't think you're looking very hard. there is lots of stuff on psn. personally, i think super stardust and echochrome are brilliant. and how many games do you think needs to be on an online store. and do you honestly believe a gamer (who isn't loyal to any brand) would base a console purchase on online services ahead of the games the system has? uh, no. i buy ps because of the exclusive games sony has. on psn i also enjoy lots of demos and movie trailers...etc...so i don't think you are very realistic at all.

but the biggest flaw i see in your post is this: you say you dev. games? then why wouldn't you realize that maybe sony doesn't need to bring as many first party titles out this year because their third party exclusives are so strong. why would they bring out GOW or new jak and daxter or whatever when they have (for example) MGS4, LBP, resistance and even snagged bioshock(with possible new content)from MS exclusive list. they can afford to wait. KZ2 was pushed back to next feb. because they didn't want it to compete with resistance 2. that's a REALISTIC move to expect from a smart business. also, i don't care what anyone says, only a fanboy would insist paying for something that you can get for free makes any sense. i'm very pleased with what sony is offering. my only gripe with psn is they could put some more "classic" arcade games on there. but really, i wouldn't be buying that many so it's not that big of a deal. you say you're being realistic, but i don't think you are. if anything, you're being over-dramatic and a little partial to the 360. but you're entitled to your opinion.

As long as Sony gets out the PS3 Exclusives, I'm happy. Sony's success against the Xbox 360 has nothing to do with the PSN. The PS2 100 million+ installbase will determine the Playstation 3's success and big AAA PS3 exclusive upcoming games will determine the PS3's success.

I know that Sony will get the PSN in very good shape, but until then, give me the PS3 exclusives Sony and I'll wait for other additions to the PSN for as long as it takes.

True that. The PS2 has a huge game library with huge quality and variety within. Now the Wii is a cheap console with games that ANYONE can play, even if they barely use it.

No four hundred dollar console, no matter MS or Sony, filled with blood, guts, and a billion button controller will ever get Grandpaw Moses to pick it up the way the Wii will.

Well considering it was already stated in a previous article with an interview at Sony. Their intentions are NOT to take control of the market share. Therefor making me not even care about this article period.

13 - I do agree PSN is growing
but let's not act like Sony didn't have an opportunity to make online a bigger part of their service when they had the chance. Dreamcast was the first console to take online play seriously on a console, however the ps2 handidly trounced the DC and sony didn't have to take the online space serious at the time. People say this is MSFT's 2nd time at online services actually it's their 3rd. They helped sega with SegaNet. Most people don't realize the OS in the dreamcast was created by microsoft so they were already knowledgeable in the space even before the original xbox launched. However Sony saw msft in the same light they saw Sega; as a non threat. Now that they see the potential of the online space we'll see what they can do when they take it serious but make no mistake sony could have very well took the online space to new heights had they took the dreamcast serious back in 1999...

I totally agree. Sony's biggest fault of the last few years has mainly been two things: complacency and pride.

Complacency in that they didn't work nearly as hard to get things like exclusives because they assumed the developers would still do that for them, and they that didn't actually progress their gaming business when they had the chance, instead of waiting on someone to pass them by.

Pride in that they assumed that they didn't have to do anything simply because they thought the name Playstation would take care of everything for them... even if they put out a very expensive console, even if the online was gimped (in comparison), even if they didn't have the exclusives of last gen, even if they had made huge claims about hardware that they couldn't back up, even if they alienated potential partners and had to exclude things such as rumble.

Don't get me wrong, I love Sony's products, and I think my PS3 is a wonderful machine. But I also realize that if you see Sony limping, it's because while twirling their guns in glee from last gen, they accidentally shot themselves.

rrod, last gen dvd drive, system can't play hd movies, almost non-existant 1st party games. a year head start with no next gen competition and wii has passed them and sony will in the next year. sony may have shot themselves in the foot, but ms killed themselves.

13.3 - Grow up and let go of the past
Granted, Sony made a mistake by not trying to integrate a "universal" online play system earlier in their consoles lifespan. Get over it and move on. Maybe they saw how they destroyed the Dreamcast and decided (mistakenly) that online wasn't as big as we now know it is. If only they had a PS3 back then to go into the future to see how high gamers hold online play. You also can't compare the PS2's online experience with the PS3 iteration of PSN. The online capable games were few and far in between with no standards of online gameplay. As much as I dislike MS, I must give them credit where credit is due. They have implemented a great system of online play, but then again... look how long they have had to perfect what they have to this date. Sony has done an amazing job to this date. Granted some features should have been present at launch and who knows their reasoning. But things are getting added with every update. I give Sony kudos and patience for improving their free online service. The problem with society today (especially here in the USA) is that everyone expects everything to be there from the get go and at a cheaper price or for free. I can't imagine the complexities involved with improving such a system or implementing aspects such as HOME, ingame XMB, etc. With such an advanced piece of technology the potential for "bugs" I would think would be astronomical. Not to mention the legal aspects of any improvements... especially in this lawsuit happy world. People try to sue for the stupidest things nowadays. PSN will continue to grow as will LIVE... however, the question we should be pondering is if the PSN will be able to catch up to LIVE without being a little more aggressive. I would be willing to pay a fee for online service if it helped with the development costs and got things out a little faster. One thing Sony does need to do is unify their online to create a universal infrastructure that all game developers have to comply with as is the case with LIVE if I am not mistaken. If they leave it up to the developers, Sony fans are going to get the shaft as developers decide how little or how much online support they are willing to program into the game.

@beavis....we all know MS used shady manufacturing to get their product out the door first and at a cheaper price (one reason I applaude Sony for sticking to their guns on the release version of the PS3 and its price... I don't regret picking up two on launch). However, they are also trying to hit a cheaper demographic of the population with their total number of consoles (humm... anyone thinking of the wii). I can't imagine many PS3 owners out there who can't afford broadband access... even though I know there are some die hard Sony fans who have had to save and save to get their console of choice and probably can't currently afford the broadband necessary even for the free online community.
