360 consoles outselling PS3 in UK since GTA IV launch - Sony still ahead this year, says Chart-Track

Sales of Xbox 360 consoles are 18 per cent ahead of the PlayStation 3 in the UK since the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV, Chart-Track told Eurogamer today.

In even better news for Microsoft, official GTA IV sales figures for the first four weeks also reveal that the Xbox 360 is the format of choice for UK gamers, with 57 per cent of the total sales of the game on 360, compared to 43 per cent on PS3.

Current Chart-Track panel sales figures place sales of the game in the UK at over 1.3 million, meaning around 750,000 copies have shifted on Xbox 360, and around 570,000 on PS3. To put that into context, in under four weeks Rockstar's opus has shifted almost as many copies as last year's best-seller, FIFA 08 - a game which launched on every format under the sun.

Looking at the year to date, the picture looks much rosier for Sony. Taking all 21 weeks of 2008 into account, sales of PlayStation 3 in the UK are 10 per cent ahead of Xbox 360. Prior to the launch of GTA IV, the PS3 boasted a 20 per cent lead on 360, so the gap is narrowing.

Wow, some people on N4G really astound me. The peron above left an unbiased and true statement and he received at least 1 disagree already. @Montrealien, I guess the video game market is not doing well and it is not a good time to be a gamer. Even though games like MGS4 is right around the corner and even a bit further is GEOW 2. Bubbles for you!

1.2 - the 360 is massive in the uk
the amount of people i know with 360s. we all had ps2's aswell. it's not the price, because in the rest of europe where the wages are lower than the uk, the ps3 sells more. it's the fact that so many people have them now, and you can all play on-line together, that more people buy them to play with their family and friends.

even the spurt in ps3 sales next month isn't gonna help sony in places like the uk and NA make up the numbers needed. this gen is totally different from the previous gens.

To be honest though.

I hope you all realise it's becuase of the absolutely HUGE advertising campaign, that must have cost millions. If Microsoft hadn't advertised it like an exclusive, they would have had a PS3 orientated reception.

I have seen the advert way over 10 times now, on prime-time on prime channels.

And to think about the lead the 360 has in terms of install base, the fact that it's shipping little over half half of the 360 version, is worrying. It's like double the user base here, and half the sales!

1.5 - so
because you "lived there"(how long for i ask?), you automatically know what makes US brits tick???? trust me, price has not that much to do with it! as i already stated, earnings are higher in england than the rest of europe. the bit extra for a ps3(which can be purchased new for £299, and an elite for £249) is not a great deal to most people.

lot's of family and friends have got 360s because of the people they know like me had them, and we could play together on-line. and friends of friends have jumped on the bandwagon for the same reason. if you have 10 people you know all with 360s, all on xbox-live, all talking about how good it is, you aint gonna go and buy a ps3 to play with strangers are you?

i know that theory doesn't sit to well if your a fan of the other console, but it's true i'm afraid.

I am from the UK by the way....born and bred unfortunately! god i wish my parents had gone to aus as the "£10 pomes" a few decades ago. man the country is a sh!t-hole.

no pudding: why is it "worrying" have you got money invested in microsoft? the percentages of copies sold is irrelevant. even if devil may cry as some fanboys on here claim sold more on the ps3(from the figures i've seem it was only a 100K), the publisher still made a profit on both systems, and will still be interested in making games for both platforms.

rockstar aint gonna care less about "attach rate" and "outsold", all they know is they made a healthy return for both platforms! i bet rockstar and take-two must laugh every time they see sony and microsoft claiming "sold more" and "higher attach rate"... they dont care, they've made back their investment already.

Dan-Boy...

It's worryign since Microsoft put out a multi-million pound advertising campaign, to try to shift peoples perceptions og the GTA brand, and the best they could do was just over half half sales.

The campaign was all throuoghout Europe, and in fact I bet the PS3 has sold more copies in total in Europe.

And I wasn't talkign from Rockstars perspective, I was talkign from Microsofts. And Rockstar are more interested in their developments not beign stunted by a last gen disk format if what you say is true. Luckily their next endeavour after DLC is an entirely exclsuive PS3 game.

And as I said below, Chart Track only takes sales from supermarkets,a nd not even gaming outlets. That's why it never made official UK music charts.

It's about as accurate as VG Charts, as in - not very.

To see MS doing well in the UK as they are doing in NA. It's a shame however that they cannot penetrate the rest of the world. In order to dominate any generation you need full world penetration. Sony and Nintendo seem to have that but MS is just to focused on NA and the UK. Oh well, it's all good for the gamers.

No. All this means is price is a very important factor and the MOST important appeal to casual gamers is and probably will always be price and not games. The 360 being a full 100 pounds cheaper is just too hard for some to pass up.

Earnings are not higher than the total rest of EU, they are very high yes, and measured in pps (purchasing power standard) GB is well above EU-average, but not highest. Yes, taxes are higher here (including my country Sweden) than over the pond but while our taxes are high the costs for public service and other basic services is constant. While GDP per capita is very high in the US, the PPS score there or in other low-tax countries like it depends on your life situation (what services you want and need), the average tends not to be as high as one might expect, though still high in a very competitive and fairly successful (historically, not present) economy.

That there are many immigrants in the UK has less to do with the imperialistic character of their history and more to do with the US and their allies tendency to start conflict, war and economic embargo on already weak economies and then not letting refugees from said places enter their country (today, not a couple of decades back). Stating fact, so don't go all nationalistic on me. And despite what most people believe, due to misleading and populist xenophobic political leaders, immigrants in the UK have actually had a positive effect on their economy, as in many other countries in the EU.

For further reading... look it up yourself, you learn more that way.

Hasn't the 360 always been winning in the UK (apart from certain months)?

I'd also say the 57% of software sales isn't something to be overly happy about, they have a much larger install base and they also forked out all that money for the DLC.

June might mix things up though.

DLC for gta wont boost sales of the 360 in my opinion, everybody who wants gta would already have it,the single player for gta got tedious really quickly in my opinion,im stil on 30% and like many gamers have had enough it just didnt have the charm of vice city or san andreas so spending money on more tedious missions fills me with dread, online is a blast though love it

Why is this tracker more accurate than vgcharts? I asked below but all i got was a disagree. I mean saying that VGchartz keeps getting more inaccurate is kind of moot seeing as the numbers your using to claim VGcharts as inaccurate are, im assuming, compiled in much the same way but from different sources. Assuming honesty in publishing, all trackers are correct for their sample data because they take a sample and extrapolate their results.

Chart tracker is about as innaccurate as VGCharts, they only take sales from Super Markets anyway, not GAME stores and GameStation where all the major sales will be made. And ofcourse they can't ask independant owners either.

so i geuss VG chartz were lying when they stated the PS3 to continually surpass the 360 by a ton in UK.

and what they don't take into consideration here is that although obviously the 360 software sales are 200k higher than the PS3, the PS3 has a higher console attach rate. And the 360 came out a whole year before the PS3, having a years worth larger install base ya know might just have helped......

got some links there bud? that show the other trackers that you mentioned are closer to official release numbers than vgchartz? and that the industry (whatever industry that is) trusts these numbers? Hell i know that the major australian tracker doesnt even monitor EB's sales, which account for about 40 % of our games market. they are the best tracker we have, but still dont monitor the major games retailer. Go figure. Oh and im not posting a link to that, cos i cant be bothered, but if you go find that article on n4g about ps3 gta outselling 360 in australia its in there.

xbox premium is approx 40% cheaper than the ps3 40gb. this is massive prcing advantage. the price cut has blunted the ps3's momemtum (relative to the xbox) in the uk. will mgs4 help the ps3 to regain lost momentum? i think in the short term it will but in the long term, because of the slowing economy, sony needs a price cut since consumers are becoming a lot more cost conscious.

The UK has always been closer to the US than the rest of Europe with regard to its console sales (and indeed, its politics), so theres not really a lot of surprise here.

I would not have thought that its a lot to crow about for 360 fans - since thew beginning of the year the PS3 is still outselling the 360 here, just by less of a margin than the rest of Europa.

The 'spike' in 360 sales since GTA is obviously new adopters after a the cheapest way to play the game - if you don't want online functionality, the 360 has a very significant price advantage over its rival. I'm not sure it makes a huge difference personally, but you could also successfully argue that DLC could be a positive influence here too, but I think pricing is the most significant. It would be interesting to see a break-down of the sku's to see what versions people are buying. Obviously if everyone is buying 'elite's' then the above is rubbish! I rather suspect the spike will be for the arcade pack...

I would also not crow about the 57% of sales of GTA being for the 360. Given the much larger base of 360 owners, its obvious that a far higher percentage of PS3 owners bought the game despite the DLC promises - which kind of takes the shine off that particular figure.

So it looks like its all to play for in the UK currently, but with the PS3 still having a 10% lead in sales and MGS just about to launch I would expect the figures to start bouncing back for Sony very shortly... either way, its good to see healthy numbers for all systems, and we all ignore the WII, which continues to slap the other machines week after week...

@jamie foxx

Really people got enough of the campaign ? So far i've seen like two used gta showing up ...
Of course multiplayer is big time helping keeping the game in houses ...
However i havent heard on the street many complains .
Plenty people actually never really liked Vice city , San Andreas or Gta III and enjoyed this one .
Of course i've seen complain online about the changes , especially with driving from old time fans online , and a few irl , but thats pretty much it , at least in my area . And its not like people wont always complain about the most popular game of any era , with even idiotic "was this game overrated" articles every week for each big titles (soon enough MGS4)

In many its the first gta i even bothered buying ... since i felt the solo missions were sloppy , not that immersive , and running around in the city wrecking havoc aimlessly as an alternative or getting paquages was getting old quite fast .

Thats even why i was never confident about the whole dlc campaign thing , getting the whole been there done that feeling , and not giving up more cash to get bored ...
But now , given how scripted , or well directed the story was , i'm not so sure a solo DLC would get ignored .
It might not have really helped sales as much as the already installed base of 360 , but i'm feeling a resurge of gta 360 sales , and a big success , probably the biggest when it comes to dlc content , around its release .
Especially if like rumoured , it's about the colourful past of Niko .

Who cares. At the end of the day you buy which console you want, you buy which games you want for that console, and your happy, theres no need to start a war over who sales the most, for gamers it means nothing which format sales the most, the only people who need to care are the publishers.

well all i have to say in this small regard is MGS4 will take care of this issue thats for sure and that game will hold of the 360 for a month or two until of course the other big guns arrive. you know resistance 2, socom, and motorstorm, as well as wipeout HD.

I don't get why people say VGChartz is garbage comment, they may have the #'s wrong, but guess what:

PS3 Started in Jan according to VGCHarts about:

Start of Jan 2008: 840 000
May 24th, 2008: 1,300,000

Actual Sales during that period: 460 K

360 started in Jan according to VGChartz about:

Start of Jan 2008: 1,860,000
Mayh 24th, 2008: 2,270,000

Acutal Sales during that period: 410 K

The difference between the two? About 12%, Chart Track says beginning of 2008 PS3 in UK has held about 10% lead interms of sales, VGChartz says about 12%, that's pretty damn close.

I'm not saying VGChartz is correct, but people just want to be negative about the #, when it doesn't suit them, we saw it back in the day when 360 was whooping PS3, and now we see it when it's the reserve just from different sides of people.
