Heavenly Sword Sequel "Extremely Unlikely"

Ripten's Patrick Steen writes:

"There was always hope Heavenly Sword would give birth to a sequel that was "bigger and better than ever before." At least that's what we thought when we received a batch of new concept art from Ninja Theory.

Not only were our hopes dashed, but they've now been pummeled into believing there will never be a Heavenly Sword sequel. Nariko is dead."

This is my favorite Playstation 3 game. There need to make a Sequel. I hope Sony do something about this, and pay these guys a lot of money to make the sequel.

HS was such a unique PS3 experience. I loved the game. The cut scenes were great. Nice fighting techniques. Nice use of the SIXAXIS. A PS3 classic.

1.5 - There will be another heavenly sword...
No worries mate there will be another HS and it will continue the story....

It will just not be done by Ninja Theory and since Sony owns the IP they will not let one of the hits die off...

Ninja theory is good but they always wanted there own IP and the main people in charge put a lot on the line to get there own company back off the auction block many years ago.... this was coming... if you read the developer diaries at Ninja Theory this was no shock at all...

No reason for a another installment unless it was a prequel

I really enjoyed Heavenly Sword even with all its faults

Ninja Theory is working on another game which they said will have a lot of characteristics similar to Heavenly Sword

1.7 - That's sad
I love this game. Played it like a fiend one night because I just had to beat it. Best cutscenes I'd ever seen and soooo much potential for a sequel. Sony, if this game qualifies for greatest hit status please bestow that upon the game. For 19.95 or whatever a greatest hits costs it's well worth it. Even in this day and age of COD4, DMC4, GTA4, and MGS4.

wait a minute, i tought they said months ago that they'll make a Heavenly Sword 2? Probably not a "sequel", but "2" like a totally new story and new main character? I think they said that the main character will be a male too. Am i wrong?

Wow. I didn't realise there were this many people that liked HS.

The graphics were fantastic, but the gameplay in the demo really put me off buying this game.

I assume the full game is a lot better?

Eh the first one was pretty good but it was way too short and I can't really think of why they would make a sequel. The game didn't sell too well and Nariko died.

And God of War III is coming. :)

So what if she die? There was other Characters they could explore in the Sequel. Like the First person to wild the Heavenly Sword.

yea heavenly sword felt like a cheap god of war clone. The problem was that unlike god of war the enemies felt uninspired and the boss battles sucked. Nariko kinda sucked herself asian chick with a british accent huh wtf ?

2.3 - The art style was asian-like, but the universe wasn't ours.
So, she could have any accent that they wanted. It didn't detract from my experience.

Personally, I'd like to see Ready at Dawn try their hand at this since they did a really good job with God of War Chains of Olympus.

I agree. Either Ready at Dawn or Sony Santa Monica (utilizing God of War III's engine) would be great candidates for developing a sequel.

4.1 - I actually played it for the first time this weekend
I rented and beat it on Sunday and while it was short I very much enjoyed the experience. The acting was great, cut scenes were phenomenal. The actual play got a little repetitive, especially since their was no powering up except the unlocking of new combos but overall a very fun experience though short lived. If you can find it for $20 or less buy it, otherwise I would just rent it.

It's a waste. I believe more people are now ready to give them a try after hearing good things about the first game. They just need to stretch the playtime somewhat longer..

6.1 - Totally correct
and the acting was superb! It was very movieish in the cut scenes. I think that a certain game that comes out June 12 will surpass its beautiful cutscenes and story but its sad how people have panned the entire game just because of length.

6.2 - I agree
Except that a lot of reviewers had to ask themselves this question. "Should I recommend someone spend $60 on a good game that is only 6-7 hours long with little replay other than trying a harder mode."

I really loved the game for the time I spent playing it even though it did get a little repetitive. But, after beating it I have no desire to go back to it, unlike God of War 1 and 2 in which I went back and beat in both god and titan mode.

I Really Really liked this game. It was the first game that I played where I got to use the Sixaxis in a very fun way. The after touch on the crossbow was the ish.

Heavenly Sword was published by Sony, they own the rights to the IP. Good try though.

Thanks Judge.
I didn't know Sony own the IP. So now all they need to do is have another team working on the second one. But the should have some member from the original game help with the second one. I want a dam sequel for this game.

just get someone else to do the next one. Just that simple. I loved the first one but if another studio can make the next one and make it just as god or better then I'm all for it.

They should do a prequel and re-imagine some things; that way they can avoid the whole Nariko story and explore how the sword came to be in the first place, something more epic.

You know, in the end it doesn't really need a sequel. I was satisfied with what the story gave me and don't really want more. It was an open and shut story.

At best, the sequel would be a shady image of it's predecessor and I'd hate to see it end up like that. I'm satisfied and many others should be as well.

If you don't think so, try and dictate where the story could go from the ending that was given to us.

the can do a prequel to the original Story. Like explain who was the first person to use the Heavenly Sword, or the God that it was made for. there was several question left un-answer in that game.

They could continue it with Kai protecting the sword, but since the whole game would involve using her crossbow the entire time I don't think it'd be good. Just something with Kai and the clan is what I'm guessing.

I'd like something more along the lines of a prequel, though.

13 - I didn't like the game very much.
I rented it and didn't even bother finishing it. And I finish 80% to 85% of every game I start, especially games under 8 hours. The animation was choppy and the combat had no flow to it. You basically hacked away at the enemies until you could catch them not blocking. Which seemed to be random and had no basis on where you attacked them from and with which stance you used. Attack them from the back? They would automatically with no animation flip the other direction and block. It was boring and unrealistic. However if Sony does own the IP maybe they could send the sequel off to Ready at Dawn or Eat, Sleep, Play (think thats what Jaffe's company is named) to make the sequel. But Ninja Theory doesn't seem to have the experience or talent to make a top notch action game.
Shut this user up Let user speak
Mwaan - 556 days 20 hours ago
13.1 - I disagree
The combat system was very good. It was just easy enough for button mashers to complete. You could knock those enemies out of block with specific moves and also perform insane aerial combos. The real problem was the fact that the game relied to much on the combat. It needed a jump button and some platforming.

Nooo! Nariko was HOT! Sony owns the IP so they can make a sequel themselves. Just that it's not gonna be under Ninja Theory this time.

Looks like a political situation here. Ninja Theory wants to be independent and go multiplatform, Sony owns the IP. Sony won't allow to loose the exclusive rights to the name, and maybe the game wasn't successful enough for Sony to pay Ninja more money to do a sequel (they bought the Motorstorm guys back then).

But I could imagine, HS as a brand is good enough to let Sony make a second title - when the time is right and the find the right developer. Question is, if Ninja owns the assets and code. Who ever does the sequel would need those, IMO. If that's not covered by the IP, it will be very hard to make a new title based on it - and might not look/feel like the first one. But these things happened before.

All these statements don't look like Ninja was too happy with Sony after all...(or vice versa).
